You ain't lying my friend, I walked from where I was living in Ohio back to where I am from in West Virginia, 730 miles altogether, one night it got real good and cold and nothing was going right but the minute I got my fire going for the night after a long day of things going wrong, that fire on that ridge just outside Logan County West Virginia on that February night, man I would relive that entire crappy day of everything going wrong, just to be able to sit back around that fire with my dog again that night. A good fire can make everything better

@@NobleSavage44 Yes they will work good. Any type magnification glass will do a good job.. The stronger the magnification the better. You could also use a pair of reading glasses from the dollar tree. Try to get one with high power like a 3 or preferably above that. If you ever find yourself without any methods of starting a fire you can start one with a waterbottle ( with water in it ) it does the same thing maybe not as fast though, it takes patience.

I wouldn't disagree with you on much, if we were jawin around the campfire. We see the world in similar ways...we see it as it IS, I reckon I've lived the life of a Texas ranch hand, mostly because my family owned 240,000 acres of Texas ranch. I flew for the Air Force in times of war, for the airlines in times of peace. I carried a badge and gun for a Sheriff I admired. I've lived subsistence in the Costa Rican jungle and the Alaskan bush...i even flew doctors around the Australian Outback for the Royal Flying Doctors. I guess the only critique I'd have, based on what I've seen and heard of your methods, is that what you're doing isn't really "survival". Any old fool can stuff every kind of striker and tinder into every kind of waterproof container he can find and then stash those little treasure boxes everywhere but up his arse. " SURVIVAL", in this context, is more akin to survival of humanity, as a whole. It's also not about being a hoarder. Learn to survive with just what's in your pockets, not by sewing on 50 more pockets and pulling a trailer behind you, besides! When I'm hiking cross country in the Alaskan interior in January, I don't believe I'm carrying near the gear you carry to catch the bus from airport Fred Myers to the Hot Licks ice cream place by the university. (I meant near the gear needed to start a fire, obviously...not tents and sleeping bags, etc...obviously) Still, the world is more interesting with both of us in it, with our good ideas and bad ones. I think you'll enjoy survivin' a bit more if you scale back. Just my opinion, I often carry a guitar along on extended hikes, so wtf do I know about conservation of energy? Safe travels!
@blackoracle69
@blackoracle69 3 года назад
very true..my focus here is in woodscraft / bushcraft not true survival we practice skills in the outdoors of fire shelter cooking ect..and thus carry gear ..but also we learn how to do with out a given bit of gear..in my youth we did challenges where we had only knife and a poncho for 5 day trips..all other needs had to be crafted in route with what we found..it was hard to be sure....but what it taught me was to carry what i needed and a bit extra..so i did not have to do with out....but i fully agree with you thoughts..thanks for the comment..safe journeys

@@blackoracle69 something I meant to suggest to you but forgot to bring up. I was a fighter pilot in the Air Force. Flying a single seat aircraft is the right fit for me, but unless you can get a snap shot off and bring your wingman down with you- something all of the services frown upon, by the way- you are going to be completely on your own for E&E. I think most single seat pilots pay a little more attention to what they have onboard to survive with, and are more likely to substitute and/or supplement their available gear. For a time there was a really nifty one handed fire starter in most usaf kits that worked great- simple one handed operation, waterproof, windproof, quiet, and it didn't wear you out or cause cramps in your hands and fingers. I don't remember what we called it initially, but the company finally came out with one for the civilian market, with a small compass in one end and a small compartment for some kindling, usually vaselined cotton balls. They called it the "Blast Match.". The government couldn't keep the damned airplanes stocked, because they would frequently stroll away. If you come across the Blast Match tools for $20 or less, buy all you can afford. They're well worth it. Huge, easily directed sparks, lightweight, most if not all models float, single piece design so there is nothing to lose, the operation is simple for right or left handed folks. The design is simple, (sizes are estimates) Take a 5" long 1/2' diameter ferro for. Make a hollow handle open at one end, drilled just large enough for the ferro rod to slip into. Place a collapsible spring in first, then the rod. The strength of the spring should keep the ferro rod fully extended, unless you push it against the ground, once you do push it all the way in, it will spring right back out when you relax, unless you flip the lock button on, to keep it closed. Now in one side of the tube, which you wrap or contour to be a comfortable pistol grip, you put a large button, to be depressed when you want to make sparks. You put the end of the ferro rod against the ground or a log or stump, etc. You then push and hold the large plastic button, which presses an internal metal scraper against the side of the ferro rod. When you hold the button as you push the rod in, huge sparks shoot out the bottom, through a channel cut in the side. I own probably 50 different styles prio w they

I'd be very curious to know how such minimal gear (less than going to get an ice cream?) allows you to survive an Alaskan winter. Exactly how can you survive practically naked during an Alaskan winter? The clothing alone to keep you from freezing to death would be considerable. I'd like to see that load out!
@preacherF-15
@preacherF-15 3 года назад
@@asmith7876 I'm interested to know where you got all of that naked crap? I never said naked nor implied it. But I've been on 300 mile hikes in Alaska, traveling with a caribou herd, picking the animal you want as you near a village with a runway, killing and cleaning it and humping it in to get a bush plane to haul it back to bethel it St Marys or Platinum for you. They're long, arduous trips that really test you. My point was that if you have to carry 10 of everything- like firestarters- you're not going to make it. You have to get the best gear, in your opinion, and one quality spare. Everything has to be light weight, or you will die on the tundra or crossing a mountain. Dozens of people do it every year. I'm not criticizing here, I'm just pointing out that his methodology will get you killed, no doubt, if you have to be mobile. If he's talking about what he keeps in his cabin, that's great. I just thought it was worth pointing out to kids it amateurs that you can be TOO redundant. You can carry too many guns, cast iron skillets are a no-no...etc.
@asmith7876
@asmith7876 3 года назад
@@preacherF-15 Not naked obviously but you did say “less than getting an ice cream”. That implies clothes on your back, which I suspect in an Alaskan winter would have to be A LOT of clothing! I don’t do survival camping, I go out to have fun but don’t carry multiple everything. The older I get the lighter the pack is getting. RU-vid has created a certain community it seems of the survival stuff. I bet a lot of couch potatoes buy some gear and then assume they’re ok. You find out quickly what works.
