One more thing I forgot to mention. Keep your paint thick. do not thin material for overspray control. Also do not try any of these techniques with enamel (paint with any sheen) Only flat paint. Some paints are better than others too. cheap materials usually get more overspray. Middle grades are usually the best. Some high end brands are a problem with this too. It takes experience and practice to do this kind of work. Do it at your own risk. This video is to show you how I do it not recommending what you should do.

Can you tell us why only flat and not ones with sheen please?
@mikethepainter
@mikethepainter 2 года назад
@@DecoyJayc the enamel is finer and slower to dry. The dust will float further and stays wet longer thus allowing it to stick to surfaces easer.

You’re absolutely spot on. I was a union painter in CA when I was in my early twenties, now I am almost sixty, all we had were flat tips back then. We used to have a handful of them. Some painters if their tip stopped working properly they would throw it in a bucket of water and put a new one on right from their pocket. These new reversible tips are very expensive. We used to spray elevator doors with oil based paints in high dollar buildings with .411 flat tips! Keep on teaching this new generation the old ways. And save them work and money at the same time. Thanks for sharing your knowledge. 👍🏼

I just did a huge job at my work in a large walk in cooler and i was on a lift myself and had tons of overspray, now after watching your video i realize what i did wrong. I think two things whipping and my pressure was a tad too high. I knew whipping was wrong and not to do it. I just didn't know that it was the cause of the overspray.

Thank you, Mike. I'm gonna try that tomorrow. I appreciate your knowledge, brother. And I'm new trying to get my painting perfect and no overspray I got a job tomorrow. I'm a little nervous, but I'm going to take my sprayer instead of the roller and go for it and I'm going to go buy that cone with the filter tip like. You have it's just like your own gun is and take my Pole off. I didn't know all that stuff and I appreciate your knowledge. Thank you, brother!!!

I think we just do that stuff without thinking, after 40 years spraying it comes to us naturally. I just finished spraying qd oil undercoat on multiple door frames with uncovered dark polished floors 5 feet away with zero overspray. Some of us got it, most dont. Lol

Hi mike, I follow you from Italy and I learned a lot from you. I like it because you are old school. I have a Chinese airless sprayer, it is a copy of the titan 450 but it is great. The only problem is that it has mechanical pressure regulation and therefore has a bit of a delay. Listening to your advice, I bought a gun equal to the graco silver plus but a Korean brand, then I bought the reducers and installed the flat nozzles. However it's true, they do a lot less overspray. Now I wanted to buy a whip, because the tube is too stiff and does not give me freedom of movement
@mikethepainter
@mikethepainter 2 года назад
you buy what you can afford. I am not sure how good the quality of the aluminum is on some of those Korean guns. I bought the graco ones on a discount. and bought about 5 of them and rebuild them every few months with Bedford kits which dont have the cheap wire that breaks inside them. China pistons are OK they last a little while but we did have one snap in 2. I still buy them for 20 bucks you cant go wrong. Just beware.
@giacomoorru3420
@giacomoorru3420 2 года назад
@@mikethepainter It looks like a very good gun even if it is Korean, I paid 230 euros for it and it has a stainless steel paint tube. It looks solid bike, we'll see over time. However, here in Italy we use almost only airless diaphragm pumps. Pumps made in Italy therefore top quality.They say they are more resistant than piston pumps and do not give problems when spraying outdoor paint with abrasive particles. However, I like piston airless guns more because they are more selective and only light up when you spray.

the funny thing is anyone can buy an airless and go out there and SAY their a painter. There are only a few guys like yourself who know what and why they are doing what they do.

Great vid, I’m in the UK and it’s predominately switch tips here no one I know of uses the flat tip set up, but in seeing your videos it does make sense to use that system even if it’s just for the cost issue, I’m using the grace 390 i can get the G10 silver plus gun but what cone filter are you using and is it integrated with the flat tip? 👍👍

@@dennisgarber you got it and reversa tips always plug up. best to have a tip filter. They do have a 11/16 reversa housing but really hard to find and still get more overspray. totally not necessary IMO. and $30 tips vs $4 to $5

if my spray rig and Graco contractor spray gun has filters, do I still need a cone filter or can i just use the 7/8" tip guard (Graco 220251) directly with the flat tips?

always use a cone filter and housing with flat tip. otherwise it will have some plug ups. In fact I would always use cone filter even with reversa. plug ups are no good either way

I use a 5 15 or 5 13. depends on how fast you can spray. I have even done it with 617 or 619 on a commercial wall interior with a pole. ( no worries about overspray on a commercial building interior new walls. )

I like to push the ladder over out from under the guy who is swinging, even slightly, the spray gun. I pride myself on being the spray angle nazi, and I 100% agree with everything, except I prefer my competition to have overspray.... I prefer not to tell them how to prevent overspray. Fortunately, most are too dumb to understand the importance of this most basic method. Furthermore, most are too uncoordinated or to old to be able to do this. Oddly, they think they know how to spray. However, no one knows how to spray if they can't master this, because overspray is everything. I learned how to spray at age 19 (before most owners would not let a painter spray) , and only was able to teach 1 guy over age 24 to spray correctly. It was on a new house, after hours, and I started with spraying water for an hour, which was far convincing than paint to him. I guess 37 years later, I sometimes swing my gun, which I would never have done 15 or 20 years ago. PS They need the stacked washer filter in every reversing tip--it is both time consuming and messy to reverse the tip. The reverse time becomes a real problem in small tips and with small 1/3 hp units. It once got so time consuming reversing my 9 thousands tip with an epoxy on gym lockers that I eventually stepped up to the tip, since every minute before the club opened counted triple in setup and cleanup time. I also threw away perfectly good 1/3 hp airlesses because they could only support 15 thousands tips and did not have enough pressure to blow out a clog in reverse. I think $500 2700 psi home depot units. The heat is really good at allowing a lower psi without the tails, and better on low overspray with lower viscosity products without resorting to like 413 or 313 which tend to ghost in one coat. They do wear faster than regular tops. Still, no swinging, people-someone might accidentally kick out your ladder!

Yea true. Only about 5 to 10 percent will get what I am saying. Takes practice and really paying attention to detail. Most people cant even do the work I do. Guys try to take may contracts and every time they mess up or cant do it. I am partly retired anyway. need to tell the next person who will take over in the next lifetime.

@@mikethepainter spell correct strikes again. I meant to bring up the hea tip technology. I have really liked the 415 hea on apartment trim and it seems to be really good outside. I am talking 2 inches from a factory window (no spray shield) and no overspray, at least for me. But I have not yet tried to train anyone on the hea tip. It might be easier... I also dig 4 way reversible, 211 and 517 in one tip. Of course, I like flat tips for the price, plus it is claimed that the tips should be thrown away at 20 gallons according to the manufacturers, because they get center heavy and supposedly get more overspray and not worth the extra paint.
@dennisgarber
@dennisgarber 2 года назад
Also, overspray is dust is bad for the lungs and my hard contact (laser eye surgery in the left eye). I wear a respirator most of the time, but it is not always around when you need a few quick shots. Yep, 10 to 15 percent of the guys who will get this video advice is about right, in my experience!.... I could go on with stories. Like my one guy who painted past the corner and over sprayed the black car on the side of the garage. I made him spend 5 hours washing every spec of paint off, which wasn't easy because each spec would come off, wash a few inches, then rebond to the car. Every spec needed several finger nail pops and wash down, until each spec washed off. I never told him that the car didn't run and the customer was going to haul it to the scrap yard in a week. I needed to teach him a lesson, so a real car never got sprayed.

Sorry but not agreed with u on this tip, cuz if you have your gun 90 degrees all the time, when you come back you leave bounch of paint no matter how fast you are, that's why u have to swing your hang so when you turn the start will be consistent with the rest of the spray
@mikethepainter
@mikethepainter Год назад
Doing that that way you end up with overspray City... Holding in a perfect 90° all the time gives you a consistent distance, perfect coverage. And more uniform coat. This is straight from the tradesman's books.
