Slight correction mechwarriors. It's been a while since I read the crit rules. The units with 1 ton of ammo in the 4-6 slots in their side torsos don't auto-crit the ammo. I'm not sure why I thought they did lol. I'm not sure if this changes my opinion on whether you should use that ammo first or not, though. Anyways, thanks for pointing that out to the kind people in the comments!

3 edition rules locks you into the top1-3 or bottom4-6 once you roll it "on a result of 1, 2 or 3, use table 1. On a 4,5 or 6 use table 2. Then roll 1d6 again to determine the location the damage will affect"p27 (i think) . So its a "mistake" we all made before the rules where made clear on how to do crits in later rule books. There are alot of bad mechs in bt and they are there to make the game more enjoyable. Rolling on the RAT can leave you with a worthless weapon. Something i think many soldier have had to deal with going to war with bad weapons, M16 for example. With that being said. I do not disagree with anything you said in your video and all of your choices seem to be far better versions of the bad mech.

I believe it was the 3rd round my brother in the locust ran up to my warhammer and kicked me in the back. I failed the PSR and fell on my head and failed my consciousness check. @@TheManyVoicesVAHot take here, I actually sometimes prefer CT ammo bins to (unpadded) side torso ammo bins. *Gasp!* I know it sounds crazy but the CT generally has the best armor and best crit padding (by virtue of being already near full) of any hit location on a battlemech. I’ll take a padded CT bin over an exposed ST bin any day. Without CASE, your mech is going to go up in flames to an ammo explosion usually anyway, regardless of where you store it, so I figure you might as well store your ammo in the most armored and padded location on the mech.

the 2-D is just a victim of the overweight Autocannon problem that's plague BT since 3050 and I'd argue before, since Double Heatsinks became a thing. like, 9 tons for what amounts to a long range, 4-slot, cool medium laser that has a chance to explode? I can get that with a Chemical Laser and I'd still be lighter. seriously, knock it down to a 6 ton, 2-slot weapon plus ammo, then we'll talk. Side note, When the heck does a 40mm cannon weigh 6 tons? I mean yeah there's the ammo feed and whatnot but even a single ground mount Bofors from ww2 weighed like 4 tons, including the carriage. AC/2's just being dumb and useless.
@TheManyVoicesVA
@TheManyVoicesVA 27 дней назад
@@havoc3742 agreed, small autocannons are really bad. There are ways you can fix them though with homebrew rules. One though I had was to make AC2s be a 5 cluster weapon, dealing the same damage as an LRM 5, and the AC5 becomes a 7 cluster. But Idk how you'd balance it for BV. But in a campaign on tabletop? Would work great.

@@TheManyVoicesVA I came up with a similar Idea for the Fedcom civil war, creating a new AC subtype called NEO-AC's. identical in every way to standard AC's stat-wise, just 3 times the BV and with experimental weights of 4/6.5/10 tons for the 2, 5, and 10 respectively (Post Civil war, become 3/6/9) so you could actually feasably mount an AC/2 on something that could use it, like a locust or Commando.
@TheManyVoicesVA
@TheManyVoicesVA 27 дней назад
@@havoc3742 interesting idea. I wouldnt even increase the BV though. BV has nothing to do with weight. That is why units that carry a bunch of small autocannons are usually so cheap. @havoc3742
@havoc3742 27 дней назад
@@TheManyVoicesVA That's exactly WHY I changed the BV for these new, these NEO autocannons. The original AC's are still there, the NEO models are just extremely lightened, in some cases shedding 50% of their weight. I even came up with a huge amount of fluff to to justify it, NAIS Project Proteus, looking into captured clanner tech for avenues to focus on making existing IS tech lighter instead of making heavier, bulkier copies of clanner weapons... the point was to have these exist but also make it so older mechs that you might see from Periphery states or pirate bands or whatnot just suddenly all using this experimental Davion weapon system. Whoever stuck you with the SHD-2D is NOT your friend. Hell they ain't even a friendly enemy. The Davion version of the Shadow Hawk is the Davion equivalent of Kurita giving you a Charger. Oh and there is a reason that the nickname for the Whitworth is "Whitworthless". It' doesn't have the armor or the ammo to stay in a fight unless it's lights (and it doesn't have the maneuverability handle lights) and it's not worth putting in a good pilot to maximize your chances of hitting with the LRMs. Besides it Btech. Play what you want. RPG take: This sort of Min/Maxing doesn't really jive with the game. You are going to be assigned a mech based on what's available. There is rarely a choice if your House or Clan. If your a Merc, you might have a little more choice, but honestly with the Mercs you're getting the cast off of what the Houses don't want sooo how does this kind of analysis help. Pick-Up game: I;m not sure that this is helpful, not because what you're saying isn't correct, but again you are undermining (personal preference) the point of some of these mechs. Crusaders are a beast, yes there are ammo issues welcome to 3025. They unload at long range from cover and move up. Cicada's are worthless and deserve only to have their legs used as toothpicks for an Atlas and Shadow Hawk 2Ds are just relegated to players (aka mechwarriors you don't like), until they can prove themselves capable of handling a better mech.

But I do like the design of the Shadow Hawk and especially the hard points of the 2D. Really easy to make it a bit more like the Clan Buster version. As for the Crusader, I've always had great luck with the machine. Slap targets at long range with the LRMs, then blast them with medium lasers and SRMs at close range. That and it just looks really cool! Everything else I pretty much agree with. Well, maybe not the Mauler part. Granted, I don't normally field the Longbow either.

Battlemaster VS Atlas, I think the Battlemaster beats the Atlas a vast majority of the time as a Linebreaker. It can consistently get a +2 TMM, and more importantly can get into close combat 1 to 2 turns earlier than the Atlas often can. It's also 380 or so BV cheaper, allowing for a better lance composition overall, especially in Late Succession era Battletech.

Maulers are fantastic mech, so little BV for so much work and armor! I would say it's just a 40% chance of an ammo crit in the torsos as well, which by the time they are making it through the armor, you should have shot a lot of those bins down (remember you re-roll BOTH the location dice if you hit a re-roll space). I've survived bin explosions because of the added structure the Mauler comes with, unlike many mechs. Also I would be careful with mech to vehicle comparisons, you can't really just compare there armor and weapons. The vehicle will always win in that comparison against any mech. There is a lot of mobility, crits, visibility (they are only level 1 at all times), and concentration of damage into fewer locations, along with other differences and so it's really a apples to oranges comparison. Vehicles are great, but they serve very different situations than mechs. Lastly the Cicada is much more survivable than the locust. That is what you take it for, which is not always needed. But it's not all about armor, it has double the structure. Also as an aside if you are one of those people that like using lights to run behind mechs and kick them. You are getting twice the damage out of the Cicada than the Locust. Along with a flamer that if there is infantry, vehicles, or even just semi-hot mechs will serve you better than the smalls of the locust. And sadly yes... so many of the chassis of the Shadow Hawk are just hot garbage. Which is so sad for such a good looking mech!

@TheManyVoicesVA oh absolutely. It would just be helpful for a new player to understand the 'why', so they can start to understand for themselves. Continuing off the Locust-Cicada detail, the Locust and Cicada are only majorly different in one respect, the Cicada has more internal structure points, so you're paying for that extra IS via the higher points value. And for the Cicada, at its weight and speed, that's not entirely a great sale. It can work if you plan to run literally into the worst of situations for a clutch spotting check, but a Locust can do that job cheaper more often than not, making the sacrifice more valuable. 7:45 do rear leg firing weapon arcs move when you torso twist? For that matter do foward firing leg arcs include front and torso side? Would packing the srm 6s onto the left and right torso pad the crit ammo issue. If all you got is ammo slots in the torso and you do get a crit is it auto explode? If you only have 4 arm crits and you do 5 arm crits does it transfer to torso and explode?
@TheManyVoicesVA
@TheManyVoicesVA 24 дня назад
All good questions. Leg mounted weapons cannot change arc with twisting. It's another major downside of them. After playing a mech with leg-mounted weapons in a tournament(SHD-3H2) I cannot recommend them at all. I don't know if leg mounted weapons even *can* be rear mounted, I've never seen it. Moving the SRMs into the side torsos would be a huge benefit, yes. It pads the ammo, and makes everything better since you can fire over 1 high hills, and can still kick and fire both SRMs. (Also you can't fire them when prone which is another downside, which moving to the torsos would fix.) If you have floating criticals rules in play I'm not sure if you transfer them inwards when everything in that arm is crit out. It's a pretty rare circumstance since in my experience, you usually lose the arm before you take 4+ crits... So I'm not sure lol. But yes, if all you have in a location is ammo, it goes boom. Although, I actually pinned a correction to some of my statements. The thing about the Archer having ammo in the 4-6 section of the critical locations is wrong. If you roll say 5 for the 1st die, and 6 for the 2nd, you reroll both dice, so you could instead roll 1 and 1 and hit the LRM 15 located there, for example. Thanks for your questions! I will see if I can find anything on floating criticals, but my assumption from what I remember is yes, if you crit everything in a location, the floating crit goes inward.
