Finished reading her biography Strength of a Woman and I now understand the answer to that question. Even if a person was amazing and incredible (and she was phenomenal), when you have nothing to show for it, it’s hard and gets tiresome trying to find the worth within yourself and talent. She had been in the business for 20 plus years but never had a #1 hit. That really bothered her. Plus, she was broke. She could barely afford her rent in a small apartment. She was almost 50 (and in the 90s that was deemed as old). I just wish she’s at peace now.
@@princessmeisha94 I agree. There were a number of factors I could fathom, too! She was one of the pioneers of that crossover R&B/Jazz style and she was overshadowed by a number of those who followed in HER footsteps, including Anita Baker and Regina Belle. The people she surrounded herself with didn't help , sadly. I think she'd still be here is she had had healthier friendships. She will never be forgotten by those who know and treasure real authentic talent (and beauty)! :(
@@princessmeisha94 I agree with mostly what you said, even if you had all the success in the world, 1 album’s top award winning every thing.all sold out concerts everywhere,if you are unhappy about life and depressed none of those things matters.there is a clip of her on RU-vid when she was a Guest on Arsenio hall show and Arsenio was saying how beautiful she was and talented, and he asked her about her love life and she said she can’t find a man, or men was afraid of her,and that was the inspiration in singing the song living all alone and sung it with so much passion because it was so Personal, it’s really said that’s she is gone too soon, rest well beautiful lady phyllis Hyman😢
I remember this clip!!Wow, she was wonderful! I gave up 8 hours pay AND PAID someone to work a shift for me so I could see her when she returned to Philly just after her Sophisticated Ladies run! It's great to have these videos but it would be so much better to have still her in person.Another tragic talent gone way too soon, unable to feel the love and support felt for them; drowning in self-destruction and pain! I hope you have found peace, dear Sister!Thank you for sharing your gifts with us.
I love Phyllis Hayman with this up beat "my funny valentin " But she really sings it so beautiful with her SLOW VERSION. TAKEN FROM US TO TO SOON. 😢😢😢😢😢
OH. MY. GOODNESS. They tore this song UP!!!! This is one of my favorite songs on the planet and I've heard it sung many times but NEVER like THIS!!! Ms. Phyllis is one of the most talented songstresses I've EVER had the pleasure of listening to. I will miss her forever. And the pianist...AMAZING!
THANK U SWEET LORD JESUS FOR RU-vid! FOR WITHOUT IT I WOULD'VE NEVER BEEN ABLE TO SEE NOR HEAR HER ROYAL HIGHNESS! THANK YOU @LOWANDO FOR UPLOADING THIS! #NewSubscriber !
BACK IN THE DAY WHEN MUSIC WAS REAL.WHEN YOUR VOICE SPEAKS FOR ITSELF.THE SONG BIRD WAS CENTURY BEYOND HER TIME.THIS IS CLASS.NOT BOW DOWN BITCHES, OR ANDACONDA
Thank you so much for posting this wonderful performance. Many years ago, Phyllis performed at a concert at the Circle Star Theatre in the San Francisco Bay Area with Roy Ayers! One of the highlights was Phyllis singing My Funny Valentine with Roy on vibes. I remembered it being very funky so the show must have been around the same time of this appearance. I thought that amazing performance was going to be just a distant memory, so I'm very grateful for this video!
3:46 Phyllis music IQ was at a genius level. Notice how the band & Phyllis lose sync but with super quick thinking she carry her beautiful notes longer and even mimics the drums to get them all back on track.
You know I have bern listening and following this icon since I was 14 maybe earlier. It’s laughable when I read all the fans applauding her and running her up now she is gone ? See when Whitney Mariah all the bubble pop singers jumped up. I did t cut and run on Ms Hyman. It was not only her depression it waS not only cursed devilish Clive It was the STARS ⭐️ SHE could nit compete with. She had a small audience a small following. But we packed those clubs. While everyone else cut and ran. She did g even waist How. Many albums did all these lauding her buy. How many? Can yiu say yiu have all her vinyl and tbe her CDs. Heck how about cassette tapes. It’s laughable like her version of Funny Valentine. I aforeMs Hyman. But nobody covers this like Ms Khan Nobody.
She died June 30 1995 6/3/6 at age 45 = 9 they said it was suicide. But the numbers don't lie that was a murder by numbers sacrifice. May she rest in Power back to her Oversoul Goddess of Love
SHE HAS THE BEST VERSION PERIOD LOL SORRY NOT SORRY 😘😘😘😘 listened to all the others and Phyllis singing it just seems like it’s her song 😘😘😘😘 love it 💯💯💯💯
