I’m sure this is not your target audience, but last year, my 4-year old train-fanatic son stumbled on your video riding on Thomas the Train. He’s been hooked ever since. We watch one of your videos every night before he goes to bed. We love to see all of your travels and adventures! And the little guy has started making his own videos to try to be just like you. 😊 Thanks for keeping us entertained during this never-ending pandemic!
That bunker in Stanley park was a search light not a gun and was for looking for Japanese submarines. The towers at wreck beach were also lights. My grandfather was stationed there during the war.
Two of the gun emplacements for Vancouver were at the Museum of Anthropology, and in front of the teahouse. The Museum Anthropology is built on the emplacement. There are gun pits either end of the museum and the middle on is the circular room in the centre of the museum. The Stanley park Teahouse has the emplacement buried under the lawn. If you look at google earth you can see the outline of the two pits in the colour of the grass about where the benches are. :)
Yesterday in Cincinnati we woke up to 12 degrees F and a skiff of snow. We are on the Ohio River across from Kentucky. It's good to see sis. Loved your Rockies trip (some favorite places since my long ago teen years). I'm sure we're all looking forward to a brighter 2021. Mike, I hope you realize that your presence on RU-vid is a positive force for many more than you may realize. Never lose your curiosity and your kindness. God Bless.
Interesting how the ferry and the surrounding area look like something out of the Netherlands, and then a short drive further on you have mountains and big green rainforests and waterfalls! 💚
You don't have a bad side..Oh what a genuinely lovely person!! Can't wait to see you more!! I love your voice and quality of your editing!! You and Jessica Rock!!
Little correction on the first location, it's actually a searchlight bunker that would hold a powerful searchlight to illuminate an enemy ship at night for the guns (situated where the tea house is today) to engage. There are many of these bunkers along the West Coast.
Vancouver ought to subsidize your channel, Michael. You entice travel to your home province better than any super slick corporate PR agency. It's always a pleasure seeing the "Sibling Editions"! The familial love of family exudes such warmth. The train trek with your dad....phenominal!
Nice you included your sister, Jessica I the video, and glad she got a negative test. Never knew about that little ferry in Surrey, or the the island park, so thanks. I do recognize that Rocko's Diner from Hallmark movies. They use Vancouver as a set for many movies - even when the script is in Seattle, Chicago, or even NY. It is a much more film-friendly city to operate in. That hotdogs looked amazing g. Nice to see a bit of Montreal in Vancouver with Le Marche" St George. Cypress Falls had a very NW vibe, but I have never been, either. I love how you uncover these places most of us have not seen. Squamish - I know and love!
You don't have a bad side..Oh💕💕💕 what a genuinely lovely person!! Can't wait to see you more!! I love your voice and quality of your editing!! You and Jessica Rock!!
I finally took your advice and went to Cypress Falls Park ... I can’t believe I was born and raised in Vancouver and never knew about this sweet little park off the upper levels highway - really glad I watch your videos - you’re helping me figure out so many weird little places around the MetroVan region still yet to explore‼️
Another awesome vid. Love Rocko's Diner in particular. Who doesn't love some awesome greasies. We consider ourselves so lucky and blessed to have been out of lock down here in NZ for a little while so can enjoy our summer relatively free and easy. Loving exploring our own back yard and never take that for granted. Hope you guys can get through this next lock down period and look towards a better 2021 because for most it has been a massive giant turd. Kia Kaha (stay strong)!
Ok Mike, I'm just gonna say it - Love you, love Jess, love the coffee shop, love the ferry guy, love the WIRTH hats, and love the ending with Jess chiming in for where we go next! So did i miss anything?....my new year's resolution is that you can't have too much love in the world. Merry Christmas to you and the Downees, with much love and good wishes from Australia :)
Great vid man! I’ve been so fixated to either skiing or biking nowadays in the city that I keep forgetting we have much more to be grateful for in Vancouver.
In the California Delta, there are two similar sized ferries. We saw the Lions play the Alouettes a few years ago, the CFL is an excellent experience. We also bowled some 9 pin, I'd never done that before. Love your channel.
I recommend Centennial Beach in Tsawwassen. Tide goes out and the beach is huge. Water isn't very deep, at times, I think you could walk right across to White Rock, though I haven't tried it. When there is a good storm some great kite-boarders to watch. You could also walk right into the states by "accident" there. Always many Bald Eagles too. In the summer, the water can get as hot as bathwater.
Enjoyed this video! Last time I was there was in March 1996. Beautiful city ! Took the Canadian from Toronto, round trip. One of the best rail journeys ever!
I have lived in Surrey, BC my whole life and never knew about the little ferry. I also don't do transit at all, right now, so I very much miss being out and about. Can't wait to roam Stanley Park again. Thank you for this! Subscribed and will be watching more of your videos in coming weeks. Btw, I agree whole-heartedly that nature is SO huge for mental health! 🌱💚🏞💙🌊
I had no idea there was a WWII battery across from Siwash. And I've journeyed around the seawall at least 25-30 times since '98. Very cool. Subscribe-worthy material you have, for sure . . .
Happy you and your family are all doing well! I'm in the USA but have a bunch of cousins in Wataskiwin, Alberta. I'd recommend you check out that area out but not much to see besides cows and wheat. Happy trails!
We had a brief stop in Vancouver between end of a cruise on our way to a few days in Victoria, a few years back. A return to Vancouver has long been on the to-do list! Thanks for showing some of the hidden treasures! Merry Christmas and here’s to a great 2021!!
Dude I loved this video. I’m living here for about a year now and had not many opportunities to explore Van. Now I have more places to go in my list. Thanks.
If you're looking for bald eagles, there's a dog park in Richmond at the very south point of no 3 road that has 2-3 eagle nests there that are amazing! But also in Ladner, there is the Reifel bird sanctuary that has a ton. We have actually have had a couple living in a tree 2 doors down from our house for the last couple of years and have had some babies over the years. Awesome video as always dude. Love what you do.
Merry Christmas Mike!!! I hope you're enjoying the holiday break with much needed rest! I'm looking forward to seeing where you're going next year (even though you don't know where you're going) but I want to be there with you! ❤❤❤
I have over 64 years but not in Vancouver. I have however been standing where you were but I never knew there was anything under it. Always wondered why they build a view point there. Been to Rocko's, more than once, but never inside it. I was on a film crew. They built a similar diner at the studio so they wouldn't have to travel to Mission all the time. A stranger passing by the studio wandered in, sat down, and tried to order something. Where you were on the Squamish river, further North about 20 miles, on a similar bank, we filmed, part of, the first episode of `Big Sky'
Just discovered your channel and love your get out of the house pandemic edition :) I’m a van lifer on Vancouver island and for the first time you’re giving me the desire to head to the mainland 😆
Although I've been to Vancouver several I hope you plan on doing more videos like this. There is so much to see and do in and around the city that I sometime don't know where to begin. Hope you had a wonderful holiday season and all the best in 2021.
Mike, Happy Holidays to you and your family. The videos of all the beautiful places to visit in Canada are having my wife and I thinking of getting passports to come on vacation and see some of these places you have shown on your adventures. The last time we crossed the bridge into Canada was a while ago when our daughter was getting her Masters degree from Niagara University !
I travel between Van and Aus every two years! Look for deals with airlines like New Zealand where you just need to connect yourself to Aukland or what have you. I've saved hundreds if not thousands by doing this and you get to fly the majority of your flight with a really nice airline like Cathay or NZ. Common places for great deals and subsequent layovers are Hawaii, Singapore, Hong Kong and Japan. These places market heavily towards both British Columbia and Aus so if you have a look going each way (do a different lay over on your return trip) and you'll have an incredible trip with multiple desinations for basically the price of flying direct. Obviously we have some more time ot wait still but i really hope i've encouraged you to look into following your hopes alittle further. It's all about taking advantage of the right deal with an airline and then connecting yourself.
I LOVE THIS VIDEO! Such a great look at the hidden gems of Vancouver! Your sister is so cute and so lucky to have you for a brother!!! What a wonderful and magical place Vancouver is and none of us would know this if it wasn’t for you Michael... I’ve never had a hotdog wrapped in bacon and deep fried, I hope to try one one day!!! I like how positive you are that the bears will be really really nice but I’m sure all animals would be really really nice when meeting you..... I appreciate you and your videos so much and hope they continue well into the future! -Bob
@@DownieLive I can't believe it took me this long to find your channel! Gonna spend some QUALITY TIME watching your stuff during the winter break, my dude! Cheers! ✌️💯
Jessica and Michael, your upbeat local touring vibes are working! Fun, enjoyayable, encouraging, examples for jump starting one's attitude! Carry on! B. "Subscribed" in N.W.MT
I love the scenery. Diner food is awesome. History lesson was good. Wished we could have seen inside the Gun shelter. Good video. Very personable host. I can't wait to see where you go next.
@@DownieLive Thank you. I love finding unusual places. When we went to England I visited castle ruins and heard their histories. A village was unearthed by one of the castles. Its story was told at the castle we visited. They said by the artifacts the found it was thousands of years older than the castle. I can't wait to see where you take us, whether it is historical or modern or Vancouver's beautiful scenery. Stay Safe.
...hey, Michael ( and Jess), as a life-ling Rocky Mountaineer (Denver), I've had a long-term love affair with Vancouver...and thanks for sharing some of the coolest-kept secrets of your slice of paradise... ...here's wishing you two, and all you hold dear, a healthy, happy and grateful Holiday Season!!.. ...can't wait to cross that border, again... Cheers, and very best regards!!🏳️🌈😉🥰😎🎄🎁🎀
Thank you for letting me travel thru your adventures. Hope you & your family had a Wonderful Christmas. Eager for more videos and yall stay safe. With Love from Texas.
I've been to some of these areas. When I was young my parents took us on amazing summer vacations to to British Columbia. 👍🏻👍🏻on the hat sales. Love your videos. From Bakersfield California USA.
Merry Christmas Michael to you and yours! Thanks again for another great video of hidden places. Stay safe and stay healthy and wish you and your family a Happy New Year and great places to go to in 2021!
Still digging out from Cleveland's 30cm of Mother Nature's Holiday Gift Giving....Nice to see it green where you are !.... Bacon wrapped, deep fried doaggies..?..... Lunchtime.....
Getting out for a hike or a bike ride is definitely a good mental health break. Thank you for the beautiful video. I will be going for a bike ride in cold Florida tomorrow. Expecting a freeze overnight. I am well prepared for cold as I lived in Chicago and Indianapolis before moving to Central Florida. I have also encountered wildlife on my bike rides on our trail system. Encounters with bears are not uncommon. Alligators sightings are also common.
Hi Michael, thanks so much for the fantastic videos you put out. They are so interesting and well put together. It brightens up my Saturdays no end. Thanks again, stay safe!
Check out the Hilltop Diner in Aldergrove. You HAVE to get there early though cause it’s ALWAYS packed -but only ppl in Langley/Aldergrove/Abby seem to know it exists! They film SO many tv shows & movies there so you have to look on their fb to make sure they’re open. Ask for their photo album when you arrive (it’s this MASSIVE album of all the shoots done there)! Also visit Fort Langley (in general) and my particular fave is Wendell’s Cafe. I love the unique shops in ft Langley and the antique stores are super cool!
I think we r in different universe....Been living in Van for 2 decades, never been to those places....I need to get out of my chair....eh,,,,stuck......
I debated with myself whether or not to comment, but here goes... I would love to hear your rationale on the heath guidelines about travel outside your community.
I'm always rattled by folks who believe somehow that a negative test or simple quarantine means they can just ignore guidelines. I feel like all of the places he shows that are closed should be a sign...
@@kvnmc I don't think "ignoring" guidelines is ever ok, but I think some of us do need a bit of positivity right now. Especially for those of us living alone or isolated, the pandemic can bring additional health concerns beyond the very serious concerns that come with COVID19 itself. Channels like this keep people going and help all of us to see the light at the end of the tunnel and remind us to enjoy the hidden gems in our local area.
@@SamMcWhannel Very true about the positivity thing, and he seems like a good dude. Just bad timing with the video and the title, as it it states "Vancouver". Squamish is NOT local and NOT Vancouver. Just hits a nerve with locals from Squamish especially in these times.
We have a lot of varied scenery in Canada, for sure, but the UK has more history and a lot of fine scenery. Enjoyed my 6 weeks there in the 1980's and hope to go back.
I suggest Rocky Point Park in Port Moody. Or even just the Port Moody. lol. There is also an old train station museum beside the park. Don't know if it's open though. Fun fact: Port Moody was the original end for the CPR but Burrard Inlet was too shallow for the big boats so they extended the line to Vancouver a couple years later and the people went with it. The park is a beautiful walk with a yummy ice cream parlor and an old lumber mill site.
Hey Mike, hope you had a great Christmas! You were out in my neck of the woods! I live in Maple Ridge. If you went through Maple Ridge on your way to Mission you would have passed by Silvermere Lake and in the trees just before it are usually lots of eagles hanging out there. Rockos diner is pretty cool and has been there for many years! I've been to Barnston Island but not for a long time. A friend and I took the little ferry across and walked around the whole island.....don't think it took us too long. Always enjoy your videos and nice to see your sister with you again!
