ops! you are absolutely correct! it should be just play ole 2y(dy/dx)! thanks for pointing out the mistake! sometimes i can not talk and do math at the same time. : ) thanks also for the kind words. glad the videos help, even if they are not always correct!

Why does the y^2 become 2y^2 dy/dx when you find the derivative. Shouldn't it be 2y dy/dx only?

You can also think of it like this: the only difference between implicit and explicit is that the explicit equations have the "y" alone on one side of the equal mark, while the implicit don't. when you for example take the derivative of : y= 2x+x^2 you get y'=2+2x notice that the " y " turns into " y' " (y prime). this is because you take the derivative of both sides, and that's exactly what you do in implicit equations. y' = dy/dx as he explains in the first example of this video

Your videos have helped sooooo much. My textbook reads like a science paper...it's all about the authors ego...I hate it. We talk great things about you in our calculus class. I know this is an old video and it might have been spotted already, but I've just worked through this example and I think the "2y^2" term in the denominator should be 2y. You might want to add a speech bubble to avoid confusion. I'm enjoying working through your videos btw.

Just as a heads up, Patrick, the annotations don't seem to funciton correctly on the iPad and potentially other iOS devices or portables. I can see the annotation if I watch for it but you just see the very bottom of it. It's probably a viewport issue, but I thought it would be nice to know not everyone is simply ignoring your description and the annotation. :P
