I’m not even a LOTR fan but this is quite the display piece. The Eye of Sauron is my favorite part

I think Sauron should get avatar style fig, he's menacing and towering character in universe.

I think my favorite little easter egg is in the "Menu" sticker in the dining room with the only menu item being a picture of meat. Easy to miss, since it's blocked from view n the close-up, but you can just make it out in the wide shot. I usually skip the stickers, but might have to make a rare exception for that one. 😆

The eating area seems to be a reference to the tower of Cirith Ungol in Return of the King, the only building we see the interior of in Mordor. It’s the one Frodo is taken to when he’s all webbed up by Shelob and the orcs fight over his mithril shirt in the room at the top of a ladder (which also seems to be referenced in those top two rooms of the build). There was an eating space with a big table like that where other orcs were fighting each other at the bottom floor of Cirith Ungol like that, as I recall.

The rest of the huge LOTR sets we need. Minas Tirth, Helm's Deep, Edoras, Bag End/The Shire, Bree, Orthanc, Minas Morgul, Lothlorien

$900 may be a bit steep, but how cool would it look to put two of these back to back?

I love these big sets but I can’t possibly afford them. Gotham set, Rivendell, the Spider-Man portrait, Star Wars Venator, and now the Eye of Sauron????

Tbh I prefer Orthanc tower, but even this set is quite good tho.

I don't care that this is only for display, all the parts and accesories and areas make this a great playset too.

I think they missed an opportunity to give Frodo and Sam full Orc-disguises, much better than re-using existing characters. Change the torso prints on the mini-figures, give them cloaks, also give the Orcs cloaks, get them all to look similiar - maybe have a spare torso and hair for each for folks that don't want the Orc disguise. Oh, well, maybe we'll get a Cirith Ungol set and they'll take the opportunity to do it then. Actually, having this include an alternate build for Cirith Ungol would have been really cool - there are probably enough parts. Another cool alternate build would be to use this to build a foundation for Isenguard that would sit underneath the existing Orthanc set. Sort of like the Gringotts Bank set but minus the rail system, instead have the underground armories and mess hall and prison and so forth. This could have been a 3 in 1 set!

I wish we'd get the whole tower instead of ~2/3, but at least it looks cool from one angle

we should have gotten dirty frodo and sam edit: since when do people not like open backed lego models anymore isn't it like the standard to be like that. even rivendell is open backed

I think a Green Dragon or Prancing Pony set would be great.

i wish it was slightly extended on the back like rounded just a bit to give the illusion it’s a complete structure

It looks really cool. They had to use some creative license for the interior since we indeed know very little about it from the books and the films. The Palantir is indeed accurate here, as you said. 😊 Personally, I think at that price tag, more figures would have been in order, especially after Rivendell gave us so many. A few more Orcs and Uruks here and especially ringwraiths and the Witch-King of Angmar (the Lord of the Ringwraiths). Alas, a single Ringwraith was "outsourced" to the GWP and the witch king is nowhere to be seen.

Hi Jang, great impression video, as always. I fully agree on the proportion issue… and I believe the designer is aware too… there’s a short RU-vid video where you can see her stack 3 upper sections of the tower (during the early set reveal in September 23 I guess) and finally get the right “towery” look… alas, for 1500 bucks 😅 keep janging !

The set looks amazing, and the Eye is impressive but the minifigs are going to be the standout pieces.

I don’t understand why lego thinks it’s that playscale LOTR sets wouldn’t sell helms deep from the original wave was a great display piece alongside being a good play set Not all of us have $500 to drop on stuff like this :(

I can just make out 3/7/9/1 on the text you were asking about, at 4:28 or so. That means it's a reference to the famous poem: J.R.R. Tolkien Three Rings for the Elven-kings under the sky, Seven for the Dwarf-lords in their halls of stone, Nine for Mortal Men, doomed to die, One for the Dark Lord on his dark throne. In the Land of Mordor where the Shadows lie. One Ring to rule them all, One Ring to find them, One Ring to bring them all and in the darkness bind them. In the Land of Mordor where the Shadows lie.

I don't believe there is any canonical view of the inside of Barad-Dûr with maybe the exception of the torture chamber where Gollum was first seen in the first film. LEGO has taken the necessary liberties to expand on the idea that there might have been a physical appearance of Sauron inside the tower itself, too weak maybe during the War. And yes, the Seeing Stone is named Palantir. What I love most is that the first time we see Sauron "communicate" with the Palantir in the mind of Peppin, the fool of a Took did see the White Tree and Minas Tirith in flames so this is a nice nod that, yes, Sauron's plan was to take over the world of Men and used his puppet Saruman to rule over Rohan, tightening the noose. I believe the plates with the drawings of the rings are a direct reference to the Three Rings for the Elves that have remained hidden by their keepers (Gil-Galad, Cirdan and Galadriel... Elrond and Gandalf succeeded both Gil-Galad and Cirdan). I'll wait until the Holiday or a few more months so I can then afford the money and have the allocated space. If more sets are revealed with Orcs and Nazgûls, that's gonna be great to expand the army of Mordor. And yes, like many others, I wish the Witch-King was included. Thankfully, the GWP doesn't have the Witch-King so it IS a good thing. I don't mind the size of Sauron: I don't think the legs would have looked good with the taller ones since he needs the armor.

Frodo and Sam feel out of place in this set but Gollum makes sense. Instead of Frodo and Sam they could have had some of the Nazgul or the armored troll that fights Aragorn at The Black Gate. Still a good set though.

Going to put this, Rivendell and the big Hogwarts Castle together on a table. Man that will be an expensive eye candy, but you gotta do what you gotta do.

This set is beautiful and I would love to have it but man I just can’t justify spending that much money on a LEGO set. I really hope they start making some more affordable sets again in the near future.

It looks awesome! But the GWP is so poorly done. Frodo and Sam should've gotten their own prints for that price. The witch king is missing, he shouldve been in the set and maybe in the GWP. Other than that and the price of course, it is an awesome set.

Really sad they included the mouth instead of the witch king. Especially since the new mouth is almost the same as the old. Kind of a shame.

I’ve wanted a Lego Sauron since the original Lego LOTR theme started and now I’ll have to either spend 60 bucks on that one minifigure or just accept that I won’t get it because I certainly can’t justify spending 460€ on a Lego set. It’s really disappointing and disheartening to see Lego continuing to lock highly desirable minifigures behind an insane paywall. I’m perfectly fine with large, expensive sets including unique minifigures but I think they should be different exclusive variations of minifigures, instead of completely exclusive characters.

I dunno, might be an unpopular opinion but... I don't really like this one (despite really looking forward to it). The price of course is one thing but all in all I don't vibe with the shape of the tower, the included orc kitchen instead of a more impressive throne room for instance, the lack of mini figures... Bit disappointed by this drop, ngl.

$460 can go away, what is LEGO even thinking - who is buying this? I really wish LEGO would just take the seats mini display section from the Rivendel set with the ring, and sell that alone with the minifigs. And in the case of this tower, do we really need the entire thing for over $400? I know people are allowed luxury items but the pricing and expectations on the customer now is laughable.

It looks like you can't put any minifigures in front of the throne. Which is so bad... And why would Sauron hide the palantir when he is in his mighty dominion. Cool feature, but not very useful with the throne.

I'll be waiting for that 70% off sale Lego loves to give us on large expensive sets. Oh wait... guess I'm gonna have to skip like Rivendell. I can't stomach big expensive sets. Not those prices for a toy. Sorry. I'm struggling to accept 120-170 for Star Wars display ships as is.

The hidden palantir is really cool. This whole interior is made up by Lego, as Barad-dur is never really visited in either the books or movies. Would I like to have this? For sure. Will I be getting it? Probably never because $460 is just too much, especially for a location that really didn't need to be all that, as cool as it is. Even if I could afford it, I doubt I'd buy it. Why does Indiana Jones get a few affordable sets but none of these other classic returning lines? I know it's not always up to Lego how many sets they're allowed to make (if it's a licensed product), but it's disappointing.

Comment to boost the algorithm: it seemed (to me) to be a miss that this set didn't include a Witch-King minifig. But then I went full tinfoil-hat-mode and wondered... are they making a 'trilogy' of huge LOTR sets? The Rivendell set had the full Fellowship, now there's one of the Two Towers. In a couple years, should we expect a $500 Minas Tirith set for the King to Return to?

Just a minor note. Jang I've always really appreciated the technical talk about colors correction and discussion of focal lengths. I very rarely see people bring those subjects up when it comes to advertising and product showcases

I don't really remember if there was really any action set in Sauron's tower. IIRC it was always just kinda looming in the distance.
