2:20 False. The only reason they bringing back 790 platform is that with KTM 790 engine you can LEGALY RESTRICT it to A2 license (35kw) in Europe and most parts of the world. It is very important for people who were buying bike with the intention to get a full A license later on and then they don't need to change their bikes. 890 engines were too powerful to legaly restrict it to A2 license.

1:43:33 Adam, if you can, don't sell that H2. Let the Revzilla team restore it for content. It would make for great content, especially more so If you and your dad's history were evolved.

I noticed that covering the front brake with a finger or two also helps index the throttle, especially when I'm standing. It gives my throttle hand a non-rotating tactile reference point. Really tames unintentional throttle movements.

Just gotta say that between me sending the email and this podcast: Got a couple of quotes from Racetech and others, got into an accident with the FZ6, bought a 2009 R6r, found out that it was the perfect bike for the type of use that I have for it (weekends and lots of track), and 6 months later I got my R6 stolen. Looking into getting a ZX6R or a Daytona next. With the R6, at 6'1" and 230lbsm I looked like a gorilla in a mini-bike, so I've been told that the Kawi and the Triumph are a bit longer... The "downsizing in power" alternative would be an R7 too... Dunno, much thinking to be done

One thing that I dislike about the camera rear view mirrors, and what might help them feel disorienting, is how close the focal distance is when using them. When looking out the car and on the road, your eyes are focused at a distance quite beyond the location of the mirror. With a mirror, the focal distance will be similar in that you will be looking to the mirror, but then from the mirror, out the back of the car and to the road. Whereas with the camera, you’re focusing on the screen which is relatively close to you. This causes your eyes to change focus much more dramatically in order to view the screen than would a normal mirror. There are many benefits to camera systems, but this is one negative that I find quite intrusive. But perhaps with time one would become more accustomed to it. The gauge clusters are all quite close to us after all.

China makes a LOT of bikes (generally small moped and small displacement bikes) so I don't have a problem with Chinese bikes in general. However - I'd not buy Chinese or Indian made versions of Euro-brand bikes - not because they can't be good or even that I'd not want to buy one - but rather because I'm actually paying for a European bike (a premium since they're expensive relative to other regions) and I want a European bike. So yea - I'd buy a Royal Enfield but not a F850... if BMW wants to price their bikes in line with other Indian manufactured bike I might reconsider... but they don't do they? Makes me wonder if most objections to Chinese or Indian made Euro Brand bikes is reliability based or more based on the Euro pricing?

Camera vs mirrors: With cameras you lose the spatial awareness that comes with practiced use of mirrors on any vehicle. I personally prefer that spatial awareness vs the inevitable image and distance-relation distortion that always comes with using anything other than your eye.

Regarding highway vs city safety - I think there are different risks at play. Highway is higher speed, but generally less opportunities for a collision and everyone is moving in the same direction and at relatively similar speeds. So one of the biggest dangers on the highway is falling and sliding at speed. For that, motorcycle gear can offer good protection. In the city, speeds are much lower but the opportunities for a collision are much higher. And people are moving in all different directions and different speeds. So the biggest danger is hitting a car that pulls in front of you, where the harm comes from the sudden impact more than the slide on the pavement. Moto pants and jacket won’t do much if you hit the side of a truck at 40 mph, but a helmet could save your life. So, I think that being more relaxed about wearing full gear (but always wearing a helmet) for city riding makes sense, even though highway riding is probably safer than city riding.
@John_Ridley
@John_Ridley Год назад
Spot on. Even if you do get in an accident on the expressway, it's likely to be a merge issue or similar, and if you fall, it's in the same direction as other traffic, so you're not going to have serious trauma from a vehicle impact (other than hitting the back of stopped traffic or someone hitting you in stopped traffic (lobby for filtering people)) mainly concerned with sliding on the asphalt which you can guard against with gear. I'll take destroyed gear and some road rash and pulled muscles over compound fractures, crushed pelvis and fractured spines any day.
@kuhndj67
@kuhndj67 Год назад
I avoid cities when I ride... I definitely feel less safe riding in city traffic vs. highways with lighter traffic (even though speeds are typically higher). I guess I personally feel safer at 65-75 on a country road vs. 40-65 in stop and go urban traffic.

Tire inflation… I’m listening to the listeners comments. Spurgeon just said let air out of your tires for adventure, type/off-road riding… Also having a day at the track do you let air out of your tires for a better grip and to heat up quicker. At what point do you run at recommended tire pressure, by recommended I mean what’s on the tire? The next guy to comment was.. she’s wondering if he should change bikes to something that looks nicer is more comfortable and has more or less storage space, when Zack finished reading the comment, Spurgeon jumped right in and said that’s easy just get a KTM it does everything, looks great. You can haul your stuff good performance on road off-road blah blah blah. Spurgeon if you’re so in love with your KTM… Empty your garage of all your other bikes. Love what you guys are doing. Right now I’m riding my bicycle on an indoor trainer while I listen and watch you on RU-vid

The thing with pinky and ring finger on break and thumb and index on throttle is how I was taught when first tried dirt bikes and it felt pretty natural. Plus its very similar to how you ride a quad that has throttle lever under your thumb and you naturally break with pinky and ring fingers.

My personal opinion is that KTM lowered the displacement of the base 890 to fit it into the broader 650-800 class created by the new Hornet/Transalp and GSX 8S/V-Strom offerings. In the case of the US spec'd Duke 790 you still get the same WP suspension, Spanish brakes, motor specifications and output claims and a retail price around $2,000 less than the previous base 890. Quality of CFMoto's other newly released bikes seems pretty good and no CFMoto typical weight penalty according to KTM's claims so sound pretty good to me.

One caveat about the two finger vs four finger braking/covering is making sure that your brake lever can be squeezed without hitting your fingers for maximum braking. Personally, I switch from four to two fingers depending on the speed that I'm going.

One of the things I like most about HS/LS is that it's very conversational. Its like hanging out with friends talking about motorcycles and motorcycling and friends talk over each other all the time. Don't change a thing! HS/LS uniting V-Strom lovers the world over. I would think you would be more likely to have an accident in an urban area but more likely to have a fatality on the highway. I also believe it has a lot to do with the rider and if the fiancé in question is an alert and responsible rider that will greatly reduce the risk no matter where they are riding. To me the helmet law is akin to the seat belt law, it shouldn't have had to be made into a law but it did and eventually we all accepted it. A rear mounted camera on the bike that shows on the TFT or HUD in the helmet would be perfect. The problem with mounting the camera on the helmet is that it will turn with your head. "So if you've a date in Constantinople she'll be waiting in Istanbul!" Spurge complains about men to Nicole then mansplains tire making to her, NICE! lol! I am really starting to wonder if Spurge has stock in KTM. Perhaps Adam could find a motorcycle or automobile museum that would like to have it on display. That would allow him to keep ownership but not have to have it on hand and also allow enthusiasts to enjoy a piece of history. Sounds like a cruiser but I think not a Harley. Victory Octane maybe? Oh SNAP finally got one right! Still waiting for the East Coast Highside Lowside Live show and the Wellmont in Montclair N.J. is a perfect venue for it! Good show as always, see you in 2!

One interesting thing is that in Michigan, where we have a law that allows helmetless riding, when chatting I find that a lot of the people who ride without a helmet don't actually understand the law. The Michigan law requires you to carry an extra $40,000 in health insurance for each individual person who will ride helmetless on your bike. If you get in an accident and the police report indicates you were riding helmetless and the insurance company notices that, they can completely deny you coverage for the damage to your bike because you were not carrying legally required insurance, and your health insurance may add $40,000 to your deductible since that amount should have been covered by the legally required additional insurance. I don't think I have yet found a single helmetless rider that knew that and was carrying the required insurance. I guess lucky for them they're all HD club riders who only go in a straight line to the next bar or coffee shop as a group on weekends, so they tend to not get in a lot of accidents.

Spurgen, spurge… Mr. spurge! Again, listening to the listener comments, high side, low side, RU-vid episode. The comment was from some guy talking about the helmet law, and he stated that Spurgeon was anti-law, which Spurgeon took offence to. I think it was Zach, who said Spurgeon is for helmets, but not for the helmet law. My question to Mr. Spurgen/spurge is if you’re going down the interstate and you’ve got a full tank in your whatever bike you’re in you can go 300 km before you have to pull into the next gas station, fill up and do another 300 km, it’s beautiful it’s sunny. It’s warm. You’re on the way to Sturgis. Let’s say you’re riding the Harley geezer glide of your choice. Are you wearing a helmet? Are you exceeding the speed limit? After you filled up your motorcycle which you truly love in spite of the pain in your tailbone and you have to go against a right turn only sign to go back to the freeway do you turn left? The BMW f series motorcycle are assembled in Germany. The engine is assembled in china by Loncin. The previous engine in the f series BMW weren’t assembled in Germany either. They were assembled in Austria by Rotax. Why is that people didn’t have a problem with none German built motors in the previous generation f series motorcycle but are now upset with none German built motors because they are built in China? Does it have something to do with the motors being built by non europeans? Does it have something to do with the people assembling it being Chinese? Also what does the characteristics of the engine have to do with where it is assembled? The engine was designed by BMW. I also heard a lot of moto journalists saying the rotax engine in the previous f series BMWs were boring and the new engines have a lot better performance and character. Maybe Zack should describe what makes the previous bmw f series motors better than the current ones. Maybe even describe why other parallel twin motors are better. That I think would be a lot more interesting conversation…no?

I think the MSF tends to train riders using a "least probability of fubar" policy. So they teach "brake than turn then accelerate out" rather than trail brake because brake then turn doesn't ask riders to manage multiple simultaneous tasks (throttle, brake, turn-in) at the same time. SO when someone is learning how to handle the throttle they really shouldn't be trying to tackle braking simultaneously (because they probably need to learn about that too). They also don't teach covering the brake to avoid the whole "cover brake while maintaining consistent throttle input" potential issue. So that brings up the question... how does one progress from "Noob" to "Rossi" in a smooth progression of skills building, you don't go straight to drifting the rear into turn one from barely balancing getting it moving without stalling. Is there a series of "ride like this and learn... then add this... then change this... then... then... then..." steps that could be identified.

interesting hybrid or alternative we could do for helmet laws: make it so if you dont wear a helmet, insurance companies dont have to pay anything and dont have to cover you at all. Life insurance and vehicle insurance, both. Maybe even throw in medical insurance as well. Then, without passing a helmet law, people will understand how wise it is to wear a helmet.

I found myself hemming and hawing about getting a "practical bike" versus a "fun bike". But then I thought about it all in context: For most of us (not all, but most) in the USA, our motorcycles live alongside a car of some sort. All bikes are impractical relative to a car. Meanwhile, nearly all bikes are more fun to ride than driving most (not all, but most) cars. So the specturm doesn't really range from "practical" to "fun" but rather "fairly impractical but fun" to "completely impractical and more fun." The key to me was realizing that if the "fun bike" is, let's say 20% more fun than the "practical" bike, I only need to ride the practical bike 20% more to balance that out. If I only ride the fun bike on Saturday for 2 hours, but I can commute or pick up groceries once a week extra on the practical bike, that tips the scale to the practical (but still fun) bike. Just my 0.02

This is a comment about the helmet laws even if it doesn’t sound like it… In France all powered two wheel riders have to wear approved motorcycle gloves. This removes the shall I shan’t I choice. The reason this law came to pass, a law that many British riders think is stupid, because paramedics asked for it. They felt that as a group they were wasting far too much time treating moped and scooter riders who rode without gloves. In general most motorcyclists in Europe wouldn’t consider riding without suitable gear.

Interesting topics, at 50:00 in... Never realized I did that naturally myself until listening to this and it strikes me as something that forms from riding 3-wheelers(ATC's) at a young age with the push-button throttle then moving to dirtbikes and adapting, maybe? Hmm... Also, 53:00 in... Just turn yadamn head?! We have a SUV with back-up cams that are still useless while towing and I ALWAYS use the physical mirrors, can't stand all the mirror-less camera crap.

So, I'm supposed to spin my head around 180 to be able to check if the car behind me is slowing in traffic and what the hell does your SUV towing have to do with rearward visibility on a motorcycle?

@@FXSTB YOU'RE the one that replied to MY comment... It's beyond comical that someone NEEDS to tell you to look over your shoulder if you have an issue with view from your mirror, or needing someone HOW to tell you to look over your shoulder 180 degrees while on a bike...

It was controversial within H-D to open assembly in York, PA, but using Italian or Austrian engines for some bikes was okay. BMW and Rotax have used established Taiwanese engine company. The Detroit / Windsor thing may go away with electric.

Regarding the Suzuki V-Strom; shouldn't they call the new (800cc vertical twin) adventure bike the "I-Strom"? Following automotive convention, V is used to designate engines with cylinders splayed at some angle (and pairs of pistons sharing a single crank-throw & two cylinder head castings), and I is used for inline engines with each cylinder having it's own crank-throw (and a common head casting for all cylinders). Thus I-2 is a parallel twin with a 2 throw crankshaft and a single cylinder head casting, and a V-twin has a single-throw crankshaft and two cylinder head castings. And before some wise-ass points anomalies to these rules... the Volkswagen "narrow angle" V-6 is an exception (however, I think of that engine as an I-6 with offset bores). Another exception is the old Honda Trans-Alp (and Ascot & Hawk & Deauville/ NT700V) with offset crank pins giving the same perfect primary balance of a 90 degree V-twin, but with a narrower V-angle.

On regards to mirrors - I remember from my trainings a quote about adjusting what you see in the mirrors: "it is not so important what is behind you, much more important is what is just next to you". The meaning was to adjust them so you can see a car that might be just overtaking you, but you would not see it in the mirror if those set to see what is behind you. And that sounded reasonable. Anyway, I use those large doubletake mirrors and still trying to set them so I can still see behind me, but I always check carefully for the blind spot in the mirrors for those cars close to me on the sides.

I dont mind the motors or even the bikes being built in like india or China. I mean ktm been making engines in china for a while and India has proved they can make bikes with both the duke series and the royal enfields. I mean both countries do have far more bikes on the streets in their countries than we do in the US. I think they figured it out
