Video game prices are getting CRAZY. From the Nintendo Entertainment System to the PS5 and Switch, you're able to find things going for SEVERAL THOUSAND real easily. Gotta love that reseller hypebeast culture, giving us graded copies of stuff that is actively dumb. Look no one should pay THAT much for a Sega 32X Game. NO ONE.

I started game collecting in late 2012 (mostly jrpgs for the PS1 and PS2) and quickly deduced that I had to get my hands on as many as possible before it was too late and would be priced out. At this time I saw that prices for NES and SNES where skyrocketing and knew that the PS1 was next in line for the nostalgia buyers to jack up prices. So for the next 3 years I was collecting with a real sense of urgency and thankfully I was able to get my white whales (Valkryie Profile, Tales of Destiny 1 & 2, and the entire Suikoden series among others...) while not breaking my $200 limit per game cap.

Collecting is actually worse in Canada. Most of our listings say they come from America, which means that they'll be adjusted from USD to CAD, which makes it more expensive, & if you do buy it then you most likely need to wait longer for it to arrive, which means it's more likely to get damaged during shipping. It's definitely a rough tear finding out you're in possession of valuable games, because on one hand, who couldn't use a bit of extra walkin' 'round money in this economy? At the same time, unless you bought a game with the explicit intent of selling back, it's gonna be REALLY hard to let it go. Growing up, trading in games to EB Games/GameStop/etc. has practically traumatized me from selling any more of my games. Because whatever little happiness that $6 store credit might bring doesn't compare to the lifetime of regret realizing you'd miss that game or console more than you thought. And while emulation is there to help scratch that itch... it's just not the same as popping in the copy you've held onto for years, that you probably bought with your hard-earned (or gifted) money.

It's an interactive medium, and the means of interacting with it (the console and controllers) fundamentally needs to change on different platforms a lot more than the transition from a cassette tape to a CD would. And stuff like this is why emulation and previous generation software archival is so important, so that all gamers can enjoy the incredible and lesser known games of our past can be enjoyed by those of us that loved them and can share them with future generations without spending thousands of dollars because of resellers limiting supplies and spiking prices to astronomical levels One of my favorite games of all time SpikeOut Battle Street goes for over $300 now and that just hurts me in the childhood, Ps: am I the only person that had Batman Forever on the Genesis as a kid that got good at it, liked it a lot and used to get psyched to play it everytime they watched the movie And Devils Third is just an awesome game that should have been a multiplatform release CAPITAL PERIOD

Why?
@PuppyLuver256
@PuppyLuver256 Год назад
@@drunkensailor112 Because monetary "value" is just an arbitrary number that does nothing to indicate the ACTUAL value of a game? Because it incentivizes bad actors to screw people over by selling an okay-at-best game at ridiculous markups? Because the original developers often refuse to do anything about it even when they're still running and have all the proper licenses to resell the games, especially considering that they have a strong profit motive (if someone's desperate enough to pay $200 for a game they'll *definitely* play a more reasonable price for it especially without the scarcity)? Because the only cost-effective method for some people to play and archive certain games, ie. emulation, is often targeted by those same devs when they're not even bothering to offer a legal alternative? Because I'm sick of how capitalism poisons people's minds to where they're willing to roadblock a large swath of the population from enjoying pretty much anything whenever possible for the sake of the almighty dollar??? Take your pick.

@PuppyLuver256
@PuppyLuver256 Год назад
@@drunkensailor112 So I guess any treasured memories you've made with your loved ones have no value if you weren't actively spending money while making those memories? "Value" has much more meaning than simply "monetary cost", my dude. Creative value, emotional value, sentimental value, personal enjoyment value, I could go on. And even if it were just about monetary "value", it is still not a *good* reason to jack up the price of games to ridiculous amounts. Key word being *GOOD* reason, not just *a* reason. I understand how supply and demand work functionally, and that's not even remotely related to the point I'm trying to make. I just don't consider "supply and demand" to be a GOOD reason to make every little goddamn thing in the world so expensive to the point where the only option for some people to get any modicum of happiness is to either go broke or risk their or someone else's arrest, and I'm far from being alone in this thinking. But I can't expect someone whose argument can't even begin to address any of the *actual* problems I have with conflating monetary cost to the full value of a creative work to actually understand where I'm coming from. Get your ass back to econ class if you're not going to bother even attempting to understand that there's anything in this world more valuable than cold hard cash.
