Join me to learn more DIY hacks to advance your sewing practice. Sewing notions, organization, templates, items to help. These real hacks are from Dollar Store and Sewing stores, or from real life zero waste ideas. These Hacks can be used in a beginner and advanced sewists sewing room. It doesn't take much to find some great sewing hacks to replace expensive sewing notions and sewing tools. This helps to make sewing affordable for beginner and advanced sewists/sewers. If you haven't watched my other sewing hack videos, I have many ideas in my daily sewing practices and in my sewing classroom to share with my viewers.
These youtube tutorials will help all different levels of sewists to hack usual ideas into usable sewing tools.
Please come and check out my channel. Please subscribe and click the bell to be notified when I upload videos on Sundays.
I started the channel in October 2020 as a way to help my remote learning students with sewing from home. I made sure they all got a machine (their own or a loaner from the school) and a package of materials and supplies. It was a big undertaking but worth it. The students sewed at their own pace and did written curriculum on set days. We are now into the second semester of at-home learning for some students. This semester it is a senior class of grade 11 and grade 12 students.
When I realized that there were RU-vid watchers that wanted to watch my content, I branched out and started making other videos to share some of my knowledge. Please comment on any of the videos to tell me where you are from and/or let me know what kind of content you would like to see.
So now, we are all on a sewing journey: it could be my students, it could be my children, it could be my sewing journey...but it's definitely your sewing journey. I hope you join me every week.

I am retired after teaching years home economics for over 30 years. Since 1994 the name was changed to Family and Consumer Sciences. We now teach many subjects along with sewing. It is so important to let the public know that nutrition, child development, finance, etc. are part of the curriculum as we have been losing jobs as administrators and the general public think sewing and cooking are the limit to what we teach. All are equally important. Shaken baby and how to manage finances are examples of areas overlooked by working parents today..In Lancaster County, PA Family Consumer Sciences is still taught but we fight to keep it in our schools!! I made all of my 3 children's clothes until they entered school. Sew for 6 grands also. Love love your channel!!!! I just found it.

Hi Carol. I agree. Our Family Studies and Humanities department teaches life skills that are necessary for all. The fact that they are electives is sad. We fill these classes because of word of mouth, but we also have an advertising and marketing period to get the word out to others. I really hope these classes are here to stay, they are very important. Thanks for watching and commenting. I hope you visit again.

Your tips are great! Practical and “real,” not gimmicks. Like many other folks who commented, I’m really happy that there’s a high school still teaching sewing. And a shop class too! I’m convinced that one of the critical differences between having a happy, stable life - or not - is the number and strength of practical skills one has. You go girl!!

Hi Terri, your comment made me smile this morning. I try so hard to be real, practical and economical. Lol. I agree. “Home economics”including sewing, cooking, health maintenance, finances, child care, even needle work... and “shop” , including using tools, caring for your car, your house, getting and keeping a job , etc. etc.. these skills should be taught to males and females alike and should be absolutely required ! They are life skills. I know my life would have been so much smoother if I had been exposed to budgeting, record keeping, etc. I learned to sew through 4-H which is also truly excellent and sewing has given me a creative outlet all these years, which I believe is essential for mental health . Being able to take care of our selves gives us self esteem ! I would start these classes in grade school and call it “ Practical Living Skills”. ( Nickname : “PLUS”). I’m too old to begin such a campaign (73) and I’m a nurse, not a teacher, but maybe there is someone young who could champion something like this .

The foam toe dividers that ladies use to paint their toenails are perfect for bobbins. You slip the bobbin in the gap where the toe would go and the thread is also held in place. You can fit 4 to a unit but they are so cheap you can buy dozens and sit them in a container with the tread showing so you can easily see which colour you want.

They used to have marking paper used with a tracing wheel to make marks and darts, etc. At some point this was discontinued and I have not found a marker I liked for decades. Hi, I use the Dollar Tree Pink clips, especially for mask making to avoid pin holes. I use a low stool for my Kam Snap Press & it fits perfect. I use a foam tip envelope moistener to wet fingers & get a grip on paper & fabric. I use essential oils on used anti-static dryer sheets inside sachet's, neck wraps, etc. that I sew. I use duct tape on toilet paper rolls to create an inside base for my grocery bags & they can be wiped off easily. I use a nail removing tool (clawlike)to press thick fabric down, i.e. bowl cozies. I save any clear plastic bags with snaps or zippers & store straps, zippers, velcro-like strips, elastic, etc. I also save glass jars/lids for storing empty bobbins, clips, pins, magnets, etc. Medicine bottles, stuffing from worn oven mit & potholders come in handy. Thx for great info.

You asked for our money saving tips, and one thing I do is buy end rolls from a local paper that prints their own newspaper. I bought a roll about 25 inches wide and approximately 50-60 feet long for $9. I use it for pattern making, design, scratch paper, to protect crafting surfaces, and art and craft paper for the kids who want to “help.” If you have a light table or nice big window, it also works well for tracing. The rolls come in approximately 4’, 2’, 18” widths and price is dependent on how much is left, width and the person deciding how much.

Seeing this, at 6 years old I just took a new bar of soap, wet it and molded the wet thin piece onto it. The next day when everything dried the thin remnant had bonded with the main bar and was usable as a unit. (last time I ever did anything clever... sad!) Thanks for the tips. I have a couple of serger thread holders as I do a lot of quilting for the inside of my oven mitt pattern as I like to make my own heat resisting layered materials for the inside of my gloves.

Fantastic sewing hacks! I guess it takes a school teacher on a very strict budget to come up with so many inexpensive, useful sewing hacks. Just found your channel and have now subscribed. Can wait to view your other videos! BTW: I'm in my 60's and didn't think that sewing was taught in school anymore. Like cooking (home ec), it was a daily mandatory class for girls in junior high, for which I'm thankful. Although I wasn't particularly happy about having to take the classes at the time, I retained quite a bit of knowledge from them and use that today in my sewing/craft room and kitchen. Still remember my teacher's name! My first sewing project was a bag for my gym clothes, to take them to and from school each week - also a mandatory daily class. We had to provide all our own sewing materials, including our own sewing kits, thread and material/pattern marking items.

Our Family Studies classes are not mandatory, but fun electives for the kids to choose. In our school board we have 13 high schools and only 5 of them offer the sewing classes. I decided to start the program 5 years ago and will never look back. It is so fun and relaxing for the kids and gives them the chance to learn an important skill. They can take the fashion classes in grades 10, 11 or 12. In 5 years I have had 5 kids go on to Fashion in University or College. Thanks for subscribing. Let me know if there is ever a video you want to see.

I just watched your videos for the first time. I’m very pleased and impressed with your tips. You have a new fan and follower. One time I was trying to set pockets on a vest. I couldn’t mark the material for the placement as I didn’t have the right marker for the fabric. And I couldn’t see the lines on the pattern piece through the fabric. So I used painters tape and taped the pattern piece to my sunny window. Then I taped the fabric piece to the window overlaying the pattern piece, matching dots. Then I applied 1/4” double sided seaming tape around the inside edge of the pocket (where I would be sewing). Then I removed the paper from the other side of the seaming tape and pressed the pockets into place on the fabric on the window. Then I grabbed my iron and pressed them against the window. Then I sewed them into place and they were the most accurately placed pockets I ever did! Wishing you all success and my very best regards.

I use parts bins, the kind you buy for screws, nails and bolts with clear plastic drawers. I have one with drawers about 2" Wx1"Dx6"L, 6 drawers across and 9 high. I also have one with larger drawers that hold my seam tape, seam binding, etc. There are two larger drawers that are just the right size for the small glue guns. I can take the drawers all the way out easily if I need to, and they go back in easily, too. I don't have the drawers labeled because I can see into them so easily and the label actually makes it harder to see into them. They are at eye level when I am sitting at my sewing desk and they are narrow enough front to back that they are not in my way at all.

The stretchy netting thread covers made by companies for the sewing industry were to pricey for my collection. I found make up brush covers do the same thing and they come 100 to a pack. And most of the time you can cut those down into 3 rds getting 300 net covers.

Y'know what makes great pattern tracing paper? Plastic supermarket bags! I cut them into a fairly even rectangle, tape a few together and trace my pattern on with a Sharpie. I cut the tracing out and that pattern will last and last for ages. It has the benefit that you press it down and push out any trapped air underneath and you don't need to pin: it simply grabs onto your fabric until you lift it away.

I just found your dollar store hacks and this video. Lots of good ideas, thank you . I already switched to cone thread, standing in a ceramic bowl behind my sewing machine, but love the pin idea to keep the bobbins with the thread. For the normal size threads, I use old golf tees through the bobbin and thread center holes to keep them together. I use a binder with a home printable for my makes, draw a picture, glue a small piece of fabric to the page, and write down all my notes. I will be buying the little plastic box you mentioned, and put all snaps and grommets in there, instead of a million baggies to search through, thanks. I also collect the ties, cords, D Rings, overall shoulder clips etc from clothes that are worn out, and reuse them. Thanks again :)

Hi I just found your channel and i think any hacks that save me money is worth knowing about. I learned to sew in high school in England and I am sad that needlework is no longer a subject taught today here in Australia. Maybe if they taught more subjects like this in schools the youngsters of today would be less disruptive as it would keep them busy being productive. One of my favourite hacks is using gardening gloves from the $2 shop to do my quilting they work great and at this price I have no qualms about cutting off some of the fingers so I don't have to take them off all the time.
