Way, way back in the day I was going to go see Lush and one of my friends told me they just started learning their instruments and that session guys had recorded their albums, and I should expect a bad show. Instead they killed. It was one of those shows I'll never forget. Last year I thought I was dying, and while laying in the hospital bed I thought back to that night several times. That's how great they sounded.

Lush took so much of their influence from Robin Guthrie and Simon Raymonde of The Cocteau Twins. Just beautiful swirling guitars that you could just get lost in and drift away.

Another belter of a song choice Adrian, impeccably presented as always. Takes me back to when I bought their first album, Scar. Absolutely loved it. I was lucky enough to see them live when they supported The Cure at Crystal Palace bowl back in 1990. Happy days.

I love Lush and live this song! I saw them at Lee’s Palace in Toronto and I don’t remember the year (91 I think). Such a great show! I almost cried when I saw this video come up and I’m usually not that sentimental.

Emma generally played a Thinline Tele, and occasionally a Strat. Miki played a 12-string Rick in the studio, and either a Gibson 3-something or Epiphone 12-string on stage. Later on she added a '67 Gibson Firebird, because she liked the logo. :-)

From the same EP is the lovely ‘Sunbathing’ which is very easy to play (G, F, C, Em, Am, D, F maj 7th, Gm, D sus4 I think) - but the effects treatments are really quite trippy and I’ve never been able to replicate the ‘floatiness’ of it just right. They were underrated! Thanks for doing ‘Sweetness And Light’, I think you’ve pretty much got it note perfect.

Great lesson! Back when I was a young dude, I always played the chorus as E, D, A (major), C, and it never quite sounded right. I hadn't thought to revisit the song until now. Thanks for doing it! 😆

If anybody cares, Emma usually used a Tele Thinline and sometimes a Strat and Miki would use various 12 strings including Gibson ES335 (I think), Epiphone Riviera or a Rickenbacker. She would sometimes use a Ricky 6 string.

Very very nice ! Me wants more ! The 2 shoegaze chordtunings used in this song are especially interesting for me. I get dazzled by all that fragmented shoegaze chords en half theory in videos, 6thn 7thn 11th, this, that, tuning different... Here it is simple and linked to a known song. I would love to see some more of shoegaze hits videos with simple (simplified) shoegazechords in normal tuning. Gotta check your channel also further. Thanks !

Quality! I still have the 4AD cd ep! They always reminded me of Throwing Muses on more drugs! Actually Kristen Hirsch is a brilliant and under rated guitarist, one of the best ive ever seen live. A Throwing Muses lesson would be one from left field!

Great post Adrian. I never knew that Lush where a shoegaze band, I don't think that I really thought about their category. If pressed I might have said that they were an indie pop band that came in on the britpop wave. Just goes to show that every day is a school day. 😎🎙🎸✅

The britpop wave was really only just getting started when they split up. Apart from a couple of singles off the last album, you can't really call anything that they did britpop. If they rode in on any wave, it was the late 80s fascination with the Cocteau Twins.

Nice one Adrian. Lush stuff isn't that hard to play but the harmonies are exquisite. With regard to gear, Miki was pretty much using the Boss pedal range exclusively. Not sure what Emma was using.

I am trying to write music like this, but I keep running into the same problem. How do I thicken the sound with layered guitar parts while not having the guitars clash? The notes always seem to clash for me, and I don’t know why. This songs multiple guitar parts just seem to fit together, and feel smooth.

Sorry for three consecutive comments and and at the risk of sounding didactic something in your description struck me as curious. If Emma is playing a D power chord with the E and B strings open then she is in effect playing an E7sus which would be E A B D with the 7th as her bass note. But, if it is still a 'D' chord which one would it be? It's missing the 3rd since it's a power chord but has a sixth (B) and a ninth (E). Maybe D 6/9?

If you want to check out another song with similar flavor that loves it some pedal tones, check out Glass and the Ghost Children by Smashing Pumpkins. Two guitars playing playing what sound like different chords but sort of supporting a voltron of chords!
