Have you tried using body tape or 3M masking tape? It might be easier to mask with. They make really thin masking tape - 1/4 ". It might be easier to move the JB material with a flexible spatula instead of a box cutter. The wood grain effect is awesome! Great process!
The deluxe '65-/67 Mustang wheel is an injection molded wheel. the band around the outside and inside circumference of the whee is welded to the main wheel. There is a central large wire that the spokes tie to as well. Ford had a mold that they placed the wheel into and injection molded the plastic around and to the wire and inner and outer bands. So separating the plastic and the metal will be a real bear.
Ah, one of the great questions of the universe "Is it three then go or three and go?". One can only hope that y'all can bring front to the world the answer to this question.
If that's a 69 Mustang wheel, the metal band and other parts are readily available to restore.... great thing about Mustangs...lots of parts available.
No way Jev, we are going to do that custom, not the way Mustang Project has you do it. We will, Jeff's 50th birthday is this weekend SO...much festivities.
Hey guys, just discovered your show and have to say I love it! Was looking for help on how to restore the woodgrain look on my 1968 AMX rimblow steering wheel. Just wondering, did you ever come up with a solution for the finishing process on that? Have a Happy New Year!!!!
Jeff is still trying to come up with something that he likes. He has been working with painting the base color then doing a wash with a darker brown but the reducer tends to lift the base. As soon as he is happy we'll post a new video.
Jeff, i watched both videos, and i dont know if its been mentioned in previous videos or not. I have a double sided wood grain wheel, and many of your tips seem helpful. I am actuall planning on powder coating the wheel, (the metal frame) and im wondering if there is a way to remove the wood grain? There is like billets/screws/bolts or whatever all around it, but as muh as i clean them, cant seem to figure out exactly what they are. Can the wood grain be removed (like unscrewed or something)?
Do ALL how-to video's waste about half the time trying to be funny? Just get to what we need to know. If we want to be entertained we can watch cartoons or the 3 Stooges
