Zach Johnson, the “Millennial Farmer” is a 5th-generation farmer who’s spent his life growing, working, and learning on his family’s farm. His wit and dry sense of humor appeal to children and adults alike. A product of the millennial generation, his appreciation of new technology blends with his old-fashioned work ethic, and he offers a unique ability to deliver his message in a way that resonates with lifelong farmers as well as those with no knowledge of agriculture. With growing consumer awareness about where their food comes from, Zach has identified the need for an independent voice from the front lines of agriculture. Zach actively promotes agriculture by sharing his day-to-day experiences in the agriculture world while providing farmer-to-farmer education to help facilitate a collaborative conversation between farmers and the public.

The o-rings are undersized and allow the connector to wiggle very slightly. New slightly larger o-rings stabilize it and fix the problem almost 100% of the time. Alcohol and/or hydraulic fluid can make the o-rings fail faster.
@JB-xc5ji
@JB-xc5ji Год назад
I have heard it could also be a software issue. Commonly the voltage goes out of range for just a split second and the computer alerts to the first issue with the sensor. I wonder if delaying the fault code appearing would fix most of the issues as the problem would fix itself quickly.

Zack, after watching you have so many problems with connectors I have my two cents to throw in. Having worked in the oil industry which involved many connectors may I suggest to you to check the spring retention of the sockets in the connector. Measure the diameter of the pin and find a drill bit that fits and use it to gauge the socket.s by feel. Sockets will get loose and cause intermittent issues.

A trick to inflate a de-beaded tire: lift the tire off the ground and wrap a tensioning strap around the circumference of the tire in near thread center position. Tighten the tensioning strap to move the tire beads to mate with the rim. When the tire starts to accept air, then loosen the tensioning strap and continue inflating. I have personally used ratcheting load straps as the tensioning strap. This technique has been used tires upto semi-truck tires. This technique should work on larger tires, but may need logging chain f and binder for tensioning strap.

A few years ago I was running a "Yellow" machine. We were having lots of connector problems. I found a unique spray can that all but eliminated the intermittent connector problems. Look into and get yourself a can of DeoxIT Series cleaner / lube from CAIG. The connectors we had were gold contacts so we got the lube specifically for gold, but I have used both kinds they offer with amazing results. Also, with custom created pin connectors, sometimes the pins are not completely seated into the housing and just push back out of the connectors when screwed together. this causes intermittent signals. You need to open the back of the connector and fully seat the pins. I wish you continued good luck.

@@Bidensucks371 We run 2 late model early-risers, 24-22's, they go for days without problems, but when they have one, it's easy to find and fix. They don't have the individual row down pressure system Zack has on his planter, just air bags on each row that run a set pressure for all of them. My cousins bought the new Deere planter just like Zack's and it ran all spring at 8 mph with no problems, so when it works, it works.

I know exactly what you are saying because we use an early riser planter also but we also use a DB 90 planter in my opinion I don't think high speed planters are the way to go

That rain compaction/crust is always way worse on bare soil that has been flat rolled. Rolling before planting or using a ring roller (Cambridge roller) will stop it from happening. If you have ring rollers your side of the pond 👍🏻
@mattbonds

those will get used in my area, usually pulled behind a disk to help break up clods, but guys will pull them over a cotton field after a rain if the cotton hasnt come up yet, to break up that crust

@LordClunk
@LordClunk Год назад
Tip for you to re-bead tyres. Get a ratchet strap and run it around the circumference of the tyre. Tighten it until the bead re-seats, put a little bit of air in the tyre, then release the strap. Then inflate to correct pressure. Put a spanner under the ratchet to make releasing the ratchet easier.

Strap is a good idea (have used it on tubeless aircraft tires). To make it easy to remove when the tire starts to inflate simply set the handle so that it is close to the release point and then as the tire fills, just slap on the handle and the ratchet will release, which allows to tire to keep on filling.

Zach you and your Dad make a great team…. At times not always easy especially when times are stressful.. I enjoy your narrative.. years ago when I was growing up on the farm the saying was, “he’s just a dumb farmer”.. well, in todays world that is the furthest thing from the truth. The technology and mechanical knowledge that is required total is beyond most peoples along with the science of growth of the food. Thank you for showing people it an be done..

Hey Zack have you ever thought of planting a cover crop like red clover on your corn ground the same time you plant your corn? Might protect your soil better over the winter and fix some very expensive nitrogen. Also might dry out faster in the spring as it will absorb a lot of water. On the other hand it might not survive your winters? 🤷🏻‍♂️
@gacikpl
@gacikpl Год назад
I think he tried that, but due to short season cover crop didnt start growing in autumn.
@leddielive
@leddielive Год назад
I know you did a massive upgrade to the planter over the winter period which probably cost a pretty penny but you now have a high speed exact emerge planter. However, after the tornado flattened the cold storage shed down onto the planter my guess is that it has suffered some damage, somewhere. Get the thing into John Deere's workshop after planting & let the experts go over it with a fine tooth comb. I believe it to be a good machine, it just took a helluva battering & needs a little TLC to put it back on track. 🙂🇬🇧

This isn't storm damage, it's unreliable connector design.

@@ke6gwf When you get that much rain water on the electrical components your going to experience problems. Do you know anyone that leaves their planter out in the rain when their not using it?
@ke6gwf
@ke6gwf Год назад
@@michaelpasold5083 lots of people leave their planters in the rain and snow 24/7. Not everyone has sheds to park stuff in, especially when you get to the really large sizes of planters. It can also start raining while you are in the fields, and they get pressure washed off from time to time. If John Deere is making a Planter with electronics that will fail because of a few days in the rain, that's a SERIOUS design flaw. So as I said, whether it's moisture damage in the connector or mechanical failure in the connector, it's supposed to be a heavy duty vibration resistant industrial waterproof connector, and it's not doing its job, thus it's an unreliable connector design. And the fact that one of the sockets was physically out of position shows its a connector issue, because rain would cause corrosion, not a socket out of position. And again, a good connector would not get rain into it, and would not corrode or short out even if it did get rain into it, so this is a John Deere design issue, and not because it got some rain on it.
