As of Episode 4, on my first pass, my favorite thing is the arc around Qual. Frieren keeps nagging Fern to read the history book(which seems a silly spell type purchase). Once she gets the practical lesson as to why that history is important, and a subtext of how Frieren only asks her to learn magic things she thinks are important, you see Fern reading it. Now, it's definitely the commonly subtle instances of show, don't tell (the earrings are my favorite example of this so far), followed closely by the names all being one German word descriptions of the people and places in the story. You already have my subscription btw.

One thing I love about this story is that every question it raises actually has an answer in canon. For one example that you've already seen, in Episode 3 we get the answer for why the Frieren wanted the sour grape spell in Episode 2. I recommend you keep in mind any "rhetorical" questions that occur to you as you continue watching, because most of them will probably get answered at some point. (For example, in this reaction you asked why Qual "can't just become good". All I'll say is, that's an interesting and relevant question.)
@dearikj90
@dearikj90 5 месяцев назад
Episode 1: "Don't pat my head." Episode 3: "You're a good girl, Fern. You get headpats." Frieren grows emotionally almost every episode. At this point she's already adopted her friends' way of showing affection to the people she cares about. It's subtle. No emphasis is really place on it but it shows how much those 10 years really mean to her. Just like Frieren went out of her way to learn how to turn grapes sour because it was her best friend's favorite food. No attention is drawn to it but you picked up on it all the same.
@ObiwanNekody
@ObiwanNekody 5 месяцев назад
It's also a lot like how learning these emotions is for an autistic person. She learns particular rituals to show affection, like the flowerbed spell or head pats or remembering their preferred food. Her affection is there, but she didn't really understand how to express it well to herself or others pre-Himmel.

The fact that no one died during that 10 year journey means they are a good party
@AllegroRubato
@AllegroRubato 5 месяцев назад
I think what makes emotions difficult for Frieren is that her life is so long, that human moments seem basically immaterial. She would need to delve heavily into something before it makes a dent in her sense of time and her sense of self. To her, caring about a human is itself a stretch, since even spending a 100 years with someone would be something like spending a month with someone for us (or something like that). So it’s not that she’s not intelligent, or familiar with emotions, but rather that she has no clue about living within timeframes that make sense for us humans. For us, it would make sense that people would become close friends after 10 years of traveling together. For her, it would be like caring deeply for a Moth or even a Butterfly that came into her home one day and was dead 5 days later (their usual lifespan). I think Frieren is about discovering the value of those small moments-because everything is a small moment to Frieren.
@AliAnimus
@AliAnimus 5 месяцев назад
That actually makes SO much sense!
@olalderh
@olalderh 5 месяцев назад
Exactly. You put it perfectly. Ironically, at first sight for us, Frieren's situation seems exaggerated: it's logical (from human perspective) to think that over the course of her life dealing with humans, she would perceive or at least understand the importance of experiences and moments to us. However, we would be judging her from *our* perspective. In order for us to understand why she can't understand us, we need to look at moments and experiences from a much bigger timeframe perspective. An experience that lasts a considerable fraction of her life is probably more prone to impact her in a way similar to just a couple of years for humans.
@Ryodraco
@Ryodraco 3 месяца назад
I see it a bit differently, namely that Frieren values her friends regardless of lifespan, but her sense of time means that she risks "wasting" time she could have spent getting to know them better. She never looks down on humans, and still mourns her master a thousand years later for instance (only being against the idea of teaching a human, not befriending one). Note her words at Himmel's funeral are not "his life should not have mattered to me but now I realize it did" but rather more along the lines of "he did matter, so why did I not make an effort when I had the chance despite knowing his life would be so short?" Frieren's attitude when visiting Himmel in the first episode shows this in some subtle ways, namely that to her it was visiting a friend after being away for a bit, despite intellectually knowing it, she seemed to not comprehend that after 50 years this could be the last time she would see him.

@agm631
@agm631 5 месяцев назад
First, this is like the perfect type of reaction video. You're making commentary and it's relevant and thoughtful, but not obnoxiously constant or talking OVER the show. I love Frieren as a character because it was so easy to get her wrong. They managed to make her powerful, long-lived and a little dense. But that last one in particular is for the right reasons, it only makes sense, given her lifespan. But there is plenty of information about her core character: from dedicating herself to getting to know the people she travels with because she regrets not doing the same with Himmel, to the spell to make grapes sour, to the butterfly detail of the hairclip (Fern summoned butterflies in an earlier episode). Even the "whole different breed" comment from episode 4. She makes a big deal out of the tongue clicking, but it isn't actually that aggressive of a reaction. It was a big deal because she was getting admonished by her friends, not because the admonishment itself was harsh. Or the fact that the reason she enjoyed the sunset was because it made someone she cared about happy, rather than because she herself found it enjoyable. She's surprisingly sensitive and cute. She might not be aware of what those things mean to humans but I think that makes them even more meaningful because it's something outside of her expected behavior and she's going out of her way to do it WITHOUT any sort of ulterior motives. It's not to look good, it's because it's what she genuinely wants to do; she genuinely wants to be a more thoughtful person. I think people also forget that she's VERY young for an elf. In fact I believe of all the elves we've seen so far in the anime or manga she's the youngest by far. Mentally speaking, Fern is about the same if not older than her.
@ObiwanNekody
@ObiwanNekody 5 месяцев назад
I think Frieren may have been the elf that that swing in her home village was built for. She might actually be the youngest elf still alive. .... I don't much like talking about mental age with Frieren. She's clearly old and mature enough to make her own decisions, even if she's still growing. 'mental age' isn't a very good concept, especially when applied to autistics.
@scott644
@scott644 5 месяцев назад
When Frieren was talking to Fern and wondering about diet affecting things? She was thinking about her upper body development. Also, the hair ornament was a butterfly. It actually directly relates to that scene in episode 2 where they were talking about it not having to be magic for Fern, yet she chose it. In that scene was a brief (perhaps half a second) clip of her as a young child summoning a swarm of spectral butterflies. And after the Qual fight, Fern has begun reading that book about the history of magic! Last, "...a mere ten year adventure." The way she said that profoundly changed from her earlier self to now with Fern and Eissen. Pitch, inflection, speed, and even body language. It all changed. She's growing, albeit slowly.

I'm loving this reactions, good quality content. In my opinion Qual was a genius among geniuses, in this fantasy word his spell was the equivalent of inventing the wheel or discovering a new element. Zoltrak was so groundbreaking that it became the standard even after decades, and it was so unique and complex that it was used to create entire new categories of spells. Also don't forget how he only saw the defensive magic once, analyzed it and figured out it's weaknesses. I belive if he had time he could become the next Demon King. I also liked how Frieren wasn't disrespectful to him, unlike other demons we saw in the show. I like to believe she had respect for him as an enemy for his love for magic and how he wasn't trying to deceive humans.

@@AliAnimusIndeed. I particularly like how Frieren(the anime/manga AND the character) don't feel the need to directly tell you things like this. It just drops details like this, with varying degrees of subtlety, and lets the viewer/reader figure it out. Frieren(the character)'s lack of explaining things like this part of why she's seen as so cold. One might assume that her suitcase is full of magical tomes or the like. What we have seen of its contests is mostly stuff that would be junk to someone other than her, and it's precious to her because of her interpersonal interactions.
@ObiwanNekody

Very amusingly Zoltraak isn't outdated. In video game terms, it's still the strongest meta play, and every single other major strategy is built around dealing with Zoltraak or the defensive magic used to counter it. Zoltraak is also the name of the music used during fight sequences. Everyone dances to Qual's tune.

I don't know how Eisen was so chill to see that Cold hearted elf being so vulnerable around her apprentice when he was in a 10 years adventure with her only to see the biggest changes in her behavior in less than 1 year traveling with a girl. I'd be hurt 😂😂Especially how she makes an effort to show Fern that she matters and even starts physical touch with her.Frieren holds her hand when they are crossing an uneven surface even thou Fern can literally fly, she clearly doesn't need help. The head pats, resting on her lap and making Fern do her hair. That's all a routine she didn't have with anyone else before. I love that even if Frieren is really dense when it comes to feelings and understanding others, she let's Fern take care of her and somehow understand that's also a way of showing affection. To let people do things for you and make an effort to make things for them ❤ ❤❤❤

"Oh she actually didn't know she was being followed" Gotta remember that first episode. Both her and Heiter commented that she's practically invisible. That only gets better and easier as time passes and with more practice. Now she's not quite the child she was then, so imagine how hard it must be to sense her? Also, that "What?" She looked over at Ferns chest, and then looked down to her own, and was like '... Our diets aren't that different...' There are times in the anime when it's obvious that Fern is a bit jealous of Ferns... "Growth" At the comments on the "age of 16" You have take into context 2 things: 1 being that they are in medieval times. In those times, women could be considered 'Women' a good bit younger than 18 or 21. In those times it wasn't exactly taboo like it is now. The other thing is that this is an Anime based on a Manga that is made in Japan, where maturity and responsibility is taken with actual pride younger than they are over here in the states or in other countries, so for people to take on a more adult role at 16 (While perhaps not like... Adult as in a sexual meaning, but more of a caretaking or responsibility meaning) is actually just the way of things.

Frieren is trying really hard. But 1,000+ years of habit is hard to break ... That's one of the realistic aspects of this show. The characters try to improve, but it's a gradual process, and sometimes they revert to old patterns of behavior temporarily before righting course again. Frieren will continue to neglect or fail to understand matters involving relationships and time, but it happens less and less.

@@AliAnimus most anime targets a YA or child audience, so most of the main characters are in those age brackets. Just like Harry Potter, ATLAB, and all the western YA/children target media. Why, yes, the character who is struggling with hormonal changes brought on by puberty is also the chosen one who is going to save the world or something. The 20 somethings are all obviously too old and all the older adults are useless even if they listen, unless they are a mentor that gets killed off. Freiren even teaches Fern that it really isn't worth her time to learn anything other than Zoltraak(or at least the Freiren Remix of Zoltraak). @@AliAnimus she does. Spoiler for earring analysis timeline in flashbacks we have seen so far. Minor spoiler for those past episode 10, more significant spoiler for those not there yet. Spoilers below. I hope this warning is very clear. SPOILER WARNING SPOILER WARNING In pre-Himmel hero party flashbacks, she doesn't seem to be wearing them. She definitely isn't wearing them in any of the flashbacks of this time period in the anime, the manga it can be harder to tell because the drawings are black and white. She is almost certainly wearing them shortly after joining with Himmel. My favorite theory on this is she took them as a memento after burying Flamme, and when she joined with Himmel to try to defeat the Demon King she wore them as a way to include her master. Hey Flamme, watch me, I'm off to kill the Demon King like you wanted. Post killing of the DK she still wears them to show Flamme the peaceful world. Or perhaps they have some significant magical properties we haven't seen. This seems more unlikely tho as we have seen Frieren pushed pretty hard at least twice in the manga, and the earrings didn't do anything special. AFAIK Flamme's necklace is unaccounted for.

the necklace gem is on her staff lanyard tip.

@@vii.x possible, but I don't think so. Minor spoiler for episode 10 below. You briefly see the staff in the flashback where she meets Flamme, and the staff definitely has the lanyard then, and probably has the gem (the manga has an angle on it that it looks like it has the gem, but it's bw so it is hard to tell. The anime doesn't clearly show what is on the end of the lanyard, but it's still there. Flamme is also wearing her necklace in this flashback.). In post Flamme pre Himmel flashbacks that show her staff, you can see the gem but not the earrings.
