its great how Frieren makes you mourn in reverse, like when Himmel passes away we know its tragic, we feel it, but then through out the story we get to know him bit by bits and slowly we come to realize what exactly we lost and how much we would have loved to meet Himmel appropriately

I'm a cinematography nerd and the cinematography of this show is so underrated as well as the screenplay. 10:43 while Fern is prepping food, she has her back against us and wipes her tears. Very very subtle but shows us her character perfectly. 19:08 the distance between them symbolizes how far Frieren still is from recognizing Himmel's feelings

When Frieren first came out, it already had the first 4 episodes since it was a 2 hour special. Once I watched all 4 episodes it instantly became a top 10 anime for me, which is saying a lot!

absolutely same. maybe even top 3 for me. The vibe, the music, the action, the story. It all hits the right spots for me. I've never cried from the first episode. And this made me cry in the first 2. IDK, the emotional waves in this show really just carry me along, even some of the more simple things lol.

Heiter only started being afraid of death and wanting to live more after adopting Fern. He did not want to leave her alone. Fern knows this, and she wants to prove that she can take care of herself so that Heiter can die in peace without worrying about her.

As a german, I am going to take it upon myself to translate the names in this anime for as many of your reactions as I can, bc the names crack me up every time :D Descriptive and fitting as they are, the fact that they often just use verbs for names and words like "biggest forest" or smth for town names and areas is really funny! Frieren = to be/feel cold (I see people mistakenly translate it as "to freeze (smth)", but it's really the sensation of being cold. Ich friere = I feel cold) Fern = far (think "near, far, wherver you are" lol) or distant Heiter = bright/cheerful (can also be used in a context of tipsy) Eisen = iron Himmel = sky or heaven Amazing video as always Katy!

I think it's a cool detail in the animation that Frieren will often be looking up to the sky when thinking of Himmel. His color palette also resembles the sky and clouds.

The characters are so memorable and great in their own way. No two are alike. What's amazing is through Frieren's journey, you can enjoy every type of episode. Because you just love the characters and the story writing/animation. The big thing from Ep. 1 you gotta remember after Himmel died and Frieren said before going on her journey was that she "wants to know more about humans." It's funny because before that whole ordeal she brought up how miniscule their 10 year jaunt to kill the Demon King was to her. So, it's what (I at least feel) is what makes this journey special the most.

Fern's reasoning is similar to Frieren because she chose magic as it made the people she loved happy. Fern's butterfly spell and any other spells she could do made Heiter happy, so she chose to learn magic.

Better get accustomed to praising the beauty of this anime. Every episode is as gorgeous as the last, if not more. And that's not an exaggeration either. It's simply out of this world with how beautiful it is.
@vincentlalyman1008
@vincentlalyman1008 5 месяцев назад
A few notes, just because I like to point those things (and am too infatuated with this show for my own sanity): Fern is impatient. We see this at the beginning of the episode : she is disappointed when Frieren tells her that it will take years to progress. And Frieren sees her reaction and immediately explains that she already did the hardest part : control. Later, her impatience comes back with the flowers... That's a quality she will have to learn : patience is essential for a mage. time, sometimes, is an ally. Nothing is truly lost. if you take long enough, if you search with assiduity, you may find back things lost to time. Whether ruins, memories, or flowers that should be extinct. Fern chose magic for the same reason as Frieren. Not for its destructive power, but because it can be beautiful, it can make people happy. Fern liked the beauty of her butterfly spell, the smile on Heiter's face. They only like magic " so- so" because what they like about magic is that part - the part that is not about violence. "In four years, she's learned as much as others do in ten" suggests Frieren knows well how fast your typical apprentice learns. Could it be that it is not the first time she teaches ? The scene between Himmel and Frieren where they talk about the flowers is right out of a romance novel. That's the kind of scene, with the kind of direction, you would see in a romance story about lovers who can't be with each others, who have an insurmountable obstacle keeping them apart. Not saying that's the only way you can interpret this scene - just that it is exactly what you can see in "romance" genre novels, movies and anime... "she is much more mature than we can imagine" : yep. Something people seem to forget quickly watching this show : Frieren is the most mature person in the room, the most experienced. Even the old lady in this episode is just a child compared to her. Strangely, people tend to think it's the other way around, and see Frieren as the one who has to learn about life... Don't feel bad about suspecting Heiter of bad intents. This is what the show wants you to think. Using a few words or images, the show can convince the audience of something - just to, either immediately, or after tens of episodes, gleefully break this conviction apart. The show uses our assumptions to manipulate us. Like Heiter "tricking" Frieren. There are, however, always "hints" hidden in plain sights to the truth - but the show is very good at keeping us looking in the wrong direction. The speech Heiter does to Fern when she is about to end her life, where he says that he wants to keep the memory of Himmel alive by acting he would have, is, for me, the "statement of intent" of the show. Himmel's legacy is not that he killed the demon king. it is that he left behind him people who will keep his values alive. And one of them is immortal. Oh - about Heiter... When Frieren cries in front of him, maybe she is thinking about Himmel. But also, let's not forget : Heiter is her friend. And he is dying. When she tells him that he has to say his goodbyes and leave plenty of memories, she is not just talking about Fern, I think. After all, tricked or not, she decided to spend the last few years of his life with him... Thanks for the reaction !

I really love this show too! I've heard stories of how there was a flood of talent joining this production. "Oh! did you hear ___ joined the show? I've always wanted to work with him. I'm gonna join too!" I liked the manga and think its good, but the anime takes it to another level. The music, the background, the animation, the writing. Its all top tier.

You'll find out a lot about elves and their nature throughout the series so you're on the right track with your thoughts. You also learn a lot about Himmel too. There's a lot to learn and if you pay attention to the context you will start to understand more and more. Frieren is up there for me. I remember finding the manga randomly while at a garage sale while buying a large collection for myself and I fell in love with it from the moment I started to read it. The anime does the manga justice and more because instead of adding pointless stuff for the adaptation they just extend scenes that were short in the manga.

I put the numbers into Wolfram Alpha for fun. If Frieren is 1,000 years old then a human lifespan of 70 years would feel for her like 1 month feels for us (25 and a half days, specifically). The 10 year epic journey for her is the same as about 3 and a half days for us (87 hours).

This show manages to get you worked up over a search for some flowers. Oh, and Himmel is the real deal. Frieren first entered his life when he was young and never really left until the end. And yeah, he understood her almost too well. He must've had his pick of ladies after saving the world, but never moved on. I wonder whether he was really content.

WHEN JAPANESE SAY "I'M DOING THIS FOR MYSELF" You have to remember that the Japanese are traditionally a collectivist culture that runs on three core tenets: Shame, Responsibility and Obligation . Westerners see acts of generosity and kindness as "selfless" because the implication is there is no expectation of return, no obligation. The Japanese, contrastingly, see those acts as "selfishness." One could even argue that the traditional Japanese culture is one where compassion and acts of kindness are seen as intrusive, similar to the sentiment of "sticking you nose in where it doesn't belong." This has to do with those three core cultural tenets. If one receives kindness or generosity, then one becomes obligated to return the favour, or will be indebted, and shame of not being able to responsibly return the debt can cause great personal anguish. In order to be mindful of this and NOT BURDEN the recipient of kindness and generosity, they turn that around and call it selfishness, because if the benefactor is "doing the thing for themselves," this absolves the beneficiary of any obligation, responsibility, and potential shame. Personally, I feel this is backwards, but then, I was raised in the West, but at the same time, as Chinese, I can understand it. The world can use all the acts of selflessness it can get without being all nasty/judgy about it.

Heiter became a father figure for Fern. The same reason why he insists to Frieren to make Fern her apprentice is because his days are numbered already. I guess you had your doubts about bad experiences but at least for me it clicks right away that the true intention of Heiter after Frieren declines his request
@ChristianBeckerKapraun
@ChristianBeckerKapraun Месяц назад
Frieren is over a thousand years old, probably 1500... and at least a thousand of those years she lived alone, training and, well, training, besides just living and learning magic. One may guess that her interactions with the world around her were superficial at best through these times. So, as far as i am concerned, Frieren never really learned about feelings, especially not about how the short lived races experience them. This is what she - besides taking care of Fern and others later on - tries to find out. Or to fix, if you want to see it that way. I also can see why she wouldn't want that - given the rarity of elves, mostly every connection she forms will "die shortly thereafter". This is also something she has to learn to cope with - given her lifespan she'll experience this over and over and over again...
