The answer is simple - more university spots and more funding for all medical professions. Why is that so hard for our government to understand. Our Government needs to demand that our educational institutions can provide the training and then provide forgivable loans to graduates willing to practice in areas where they are needed. Second step is to make it more simple for Canadians receiving medical training in other countries to come back home for residency.

As someone with a painful, progressive, genetic condition, I see our health care system in action and the last 5 years has been the breaking point. It's no longer health care, it's torture, if you are sick enough to be going to the ER, you need a bed but they make you sit up in waiting room chairs while they treat you for 8hrs, 24hrs+ wait for a bed. If you need a specialist the wait is so long whatever issues you are having get worse. People who can afford it are going to the united states for care! We used to believe we had better Healthcare than them but now we're running to them because the Canadian government has seriously dropped the ball on Healthcare top to bottom.

Even if you have a family doctor there is still no continuity of care. My family doctor remembers nothing of any previous conversation. You can have the same conversation dozens and dozens of times despite seeing the same doctor for almost 8 years, you have to start from step one each time, and each time he acts like its the first time it has ever been discussed. He doesn't make any notes or if he does never looks at them. Never looks at any notes from any other member of my healthcare team. He has no idea what conditions I have nor what meds I am on. It is like talking to someone with Alzheimer's essentially. The care that doctors provide is just absolute trash. If you get sick you need to solve EVERYTHING on your own, literally everything, otherwise nothing will ever get done. It is also NEVER the job of the doctor in front of you, it will always be someone else's job regardless which doctor you see or who they send you to, it won't be their job either. The entire western medical way (outside of celebrity cash) is a total scam. If only the average person knew just what a scam it was. How little of a role the western medical healthcare professional ACTUALLY fulfills vs what they market.

WE don't have a family doctor here in Southern BC. We used to have one, but he was removed from our little town because of behavioral issues. To protect his identity, we'll call him Jayded Quackentyre. Jayded had some negative personality issues and there were problems. Ok, that's fine, they got rid of him, but they didn't replace him. That was almost 3 years ago and all that's happened was that we were told we were on a " list " and as soon as a doctor was available we'd have a family doctor once again. That was almost 3 years ago. I guess we're just going to have to stop giving billions away to foreign entities and start taking care of our own country. I wonder if that will ever happen?

In BC gov't says they have fixed the issue since they have a sign up list if you have no doctor. But it does not work: I've been on it for 3 years and never had a call to get a doctor. Problem is in my view at least 4 fold, in no particular order: 1. MD's are the initial bottleneck to system! Many of us would be happy to have instead a DC or ND - both would make excellent primary care access points as they also have 7 years of good education! 2. Our system is set up to treat disease, not prevent it! ND and DC for primary care access would help very much to change this. 3. Most obvious issue is the RUNAWAY IMMIGRATION under Trudeau! Letting in just everyone - not those with skill sets we need has overrun ALL Canadian services - not just healthcare but crime prevention, housing. This Liberal government lacks common sense! 4. Follow the money folks - for every person who has no primary care, how much does the healthcare system save? Obviously, no dollars are spent on specialists or pharmacy or hospitals either since non of these services are utilized if one has no primary care doctor to get access! I'd like to start a petition for ALL of us without doctors to get the equivalent funds per person that they save on each of us directly. I would use mine to go to a dentist and an ND and DC! Forget MD's unless you need drugs or surgery as they have almost no training in long term illness and no time to treat you anyway! Perhaps a Conservative government will take steps to make needed commonsense changes. At least they will defund the Ontario first/Liberal mouthpiece of the CBC news, the unnecessary bureaucracy at all levels and stop the spendthrift and fraud of the Trudeau government. How I miss Canada as a society pre-Trudeau! Have a good week everyone! Take good care of yourselves! Be kind to one another. And try your best not to lose hope. Blessings.

Canada had 26.10 doctors per 10,000 population in 2017. USA had 25.98 doctors per 10,000 population in 2016. However, the US have multiple primary care providers that help hand in hand on the ground. They have a huge supply of Nurse Practitioners, Physician Assistants, DO's, CRNA, even Pharmacists can prescribe drugs themselves, which unfortunately Canada Lags behind due to its bureaucratic public health care system. Don't get me wrong There is a shortage in the US and other developed countries as well but it is just insanity in Canada right now, imagine a 6 months wait to see a specialist.

Medical practitioners are granted immigration based on their education agency profession but once here have to go through a lengthy and costly process. Then there are new doctors who graduate from UBC and other of our top universities and end up moving south as we can't afford to pay them a decent wage during their residencies. My doctor's practice has seen an unbelievable turn over in young doctors. Ontario has brought in 13,000 foreign doctors. About time more instead of less money is invested in our health care system. Germany, the UK as I know, and probably many other financially 'rational' countries are importing foreign physicians to their countries with the reasoning that it will reduce the wages for physicians, resulting in reduced costs, and it will increase the physician supply to their people, resulting in improved healthcare. But the organizations of Canadian doctors in my opinion are lobbying against this rationale out of their self-interest for their earnings, i.e. selling the Canadians' health for more gain. Canada is a very difficult country for foreign doctors to be licensed despite them passing the required examinations and high achievements.

We immigrated with my wife and three children from Ukraine. I am a surgeon, my wife is an ophthalmologist. We have more than ten years of experience. You can go through the licensing path, but you have to devote all your time to it. Now we have to pay the rent and feed the children... There's no time to study for exams and improve our English. I'm sure we could be useful to other people, but it's just not possible.

I guess it's kind of sabotage of internationaly educated Doctors and Nurses. Took 8 years to my wife to get her license with 15 years of experience in Israel, which has definitely more advanced health system than Canada

@@vladislavmusienko773 Eight years is really a long time, especially after 15 years of experience in Israel. I know that there is very good medicine and trained staff there. Your wife has come a long way. Not everyone can. Many stop or don't even start. Soon it will be spring and there will be a lot of construction work, maybe it will be a little easier. We plan to earn money for the first exams and prepare for them at the same time. Although, it sounds more humorous than real). The main thing is that our children are safe. The rest doesn't matter.

Having to see a GP before being able to see a specialist is a waste of time and money. Also all the money the provincial govt is wasting on ads they could have paid for more Drs and nurses. Btw those ads are for private pay out of pocket health care! Not everyone can afford this. But the Conservatives both provincial and federal don’t care!

Some of the best doctors I have had were trained outside this country, and I've had excellent doctors trained in Canada. I would absolutely go to a foreign-trained doctor if that is who is available. Doctors are not the only ones who can provide care. Pharmacists and nurses can and do provide some essential basic care, clearing the way so that more complex care goes to doctors.

Senior politicians and government policy workers could give up their family Doctors to those who have serious need for a doctor. That would give them more incentive to focus on the issues that would solve the problems.

Among a group of 30 high-income countries that have universally accessible health care, Canada spends the most money on health care as a percentage of GDP. Despite this high spending, we are a poor performer. Among this group, Canada had the longest wait lists and ranked 28th (out of 30) for the number of doctors. In my opinion that is shameful. Physicians need to continue advocating for a better system. Politicians and policy makers have let patients down. I hope that the recently announced funding goes to train and retain more frontline workers and does not go to the management positions as it is very clear we rarely find a physician or nurse who praises our system, however you will never find a hospital CEO that criticizes it

Write 11 refills instead of 1. But no, gotta keep having you come back constantly for medication refills you have been on for ages. I got one specialist who is about the only sane doctor and he just writes refills for my med despite having not seen him in years because he knows seeing me will be a waste of time because its not necessary given he had tons of other patients to see.
