An HDT RV Hauler built to boondock and haul our SpaceCraft custom semi-trailer 5th wheel.
Our extreme completely custom 5th wheel is built on a semi-trailer chassis with air suspension and air brakes. Completely loaded it weighs 42,000 lbs rolling down the highway. And we do roll down the highway nearly every week. You see, we believe that if your home has wheels they should be used.
This is the complete tour of Voyager. Our custom built HDT RV Hauler semi-truck by Volvo. Built by Herrin Welding Services and designed by us with boondocking and hauling our semi-trailer 5th wheel RV around the USA.
1 minute mark:
Come inside the cab of the Volvo 780 semi-truck and take a look at the interior. We show the rear camera built into the dash as well as the ample cabinet storage space inside.
5 minute mark:
A sink inside the cab for cleaning up along with a microwave, refrigerator for lunch on the road, bunks to sleep and a cassette porta-potty for emergencies. We can use this for camping or traveling down the road to our next stop.
8 minute mark:
We go outside where the rubber hits the road in our modifications to this semi-truck. A built in storage box for the Honda 2000w generator on a slide out tray keeps it out of the elements.
10 minute mark:
The 60 gallon water tank is integrated into the chassis of the truck and able to discharge water into Orion. Our gray and black tank is also integrated and installed under the hitch to keep it out of the weather.
14 minute mark:
We talk about adding the tandem axles and how it is different than the original truck. As well as the requirements for licensing since it's a semi-truck.
16 minute mark:
There is a notice about the building of a water transfer pump in a case similar to Adventure RV.
RV Living at it's best.

We use the TSD card for diesel fuel and save a bundle each time we fill up our Big Rig. We also use it to fill up our Onan generator.
The big blue boards (XL version) we use sometimes to get us "un-stuck" is from:

2016 Smart fortwo "Pathfinder"
2019 SpaceCraft Custom built semi-trailer 5th wheel "Orion"
2023 Thor Magnitude XG32 Class C "Curiosity"
2017 Jeep Wrangler Sahara "Artemis"
Power system:
3250 watts of solar with Panasonic panels
30.1 KWH of Lithium batteries
2- 4K watt Magnum Inverters deliver power as if we are on shore power
2- 4K watt 240v Cotek Inverters deliver additional power for our LG Mini split HVAC and stove
Coachnet is our roadside assistance company we use but hopefully we don't use them too often. LOL
We are not sponsored by Whataburger but I do enjoy them anytime I can get my hands on one. They used to be just out of Texas but they have expanded.

Hi guys.... Our Western star is set up very similar to the inside of your Volvo. We had ours customized for us back in 07 as well.. Except we are truly set up for heavy haul..(200k)... We elected to get a bed at the very tip top to where we could sleep side-by-side and leave the dinette table set up all the time... The extra tanks underneath is a great idea... We have a Honda 7000 set up like Dave and Karen's however you are correct about the APU being a whole lot louder... Thank you so much for the video... Stay safe...J&A

Hey J&A, good to hear from you again. That sounds very cool on the top bunk mod. Great idea. We really enjoy the dinette and use it daily while on the road. Your truck is definitely set up for heavy loads...glad we don't have to pay the fuel costs for 200K loads though! LOL. Appreciate the comment and hope to see you guys sometime on the road. Safe travels. Aloha

When I first saw this rig I wondered why it had tandem rear axles... then I read the SpaceCraft weight specs, and it made sense. The explanation of the history is appreciated. I'll note that the fifth wheel is positioned unusually far rearward, due to the car deck. As delivered the fifth wheel was over the axle, which is normal. The first deck moved the hitch back to make space for the car, and the second deck placed the fifth wheel roughly over the rearmost axle instead of midway between the axles as usual. The new configuration is suitable for this use, but wouldn't work for a heavier commercial trailer. The smaller fifth-wheel hitches, as used for RVs and lighter commercial trailers, go up to about 30,000 pounds of trailer weight, which is the range covered by the SAE J2638 standard. They can typically handle up to 7,500 pounds of pin weight - not enough as explained in the video - but even the total trailer weight capacity would not be suitable for the SpaceCraft. Both RV and many commercial fifth-wheels use the 2" (nominal) king pin size, but there is a higher-capacity 3.5" size available for heavier applications. I assume that while this is a commercial truck fifth-wheel, it is still the 2" size, and it could be used to tow more conventional fifth-wheel RV trailers. If I understand the history, remarks, and images correctly, the truck was originally a 4X2 and had a idler (non-driven) tag axle added for load capacity, making it a 6X2. As long as it is never driven on ice, snow, or mud, I suppose that's adequate; it's certainly cheaper than a 6X4.
@bigtruckbigtravels
@bigtruckbigtravels Год назад
You are correct, Brian. We were going to make the additional axle a drive (6x4) but after discussing with some friends, decided on just a tag axle. That was a mistake. Our gut told us to configure as a 6x4 but we didn't and should have. I guess the better mileage is a consolation but had we to do it over again, it would be a twin screw set up. Thanks for the comment. Glad you're along on the journey. 😁

Yes, Chuck, there are some longer units out there but their trailers are significantly less weight (by half at least) and with a longer bed I worry about stability with our trailer. Great Rig. In Palm Beach County (PBC) Florida they considered this a conversion and the county campgrounds are so stupid for not accepting it. Only if you have RVIA cert. Happened to me since I started living here once again. In Orange County FL they allow it even car/truck camping. Heads up when you are in PBC not to stay in the county campgrounds w/o the RVIA Cert. I love that the car fits up there. So convenient. I hope you can use the rig for years to come!!!

I never realized until you said it that your truck has a dead tag axle. Can you dump the air on just the tag axle? I drove a few light weight dump trucks and a log truck with a tag axle and always hated them because is was so easy to get stuck empty or loaded. You do a good job boondocking and not getting stuck. I would want a live tandem with a locking power divider and locking diffs in both rears to offroad. Your bed design is one of the best!

We were not thinking Carl, when we had the axle added. I could have had power or lift to it but I told them that a "dead" axle was fine. It should have had power to it but we're looking into options. It's always a challenge to not get stuck but so far we're doing ok. Appreciate your comments and thanks for watching the channel. 😊

The RV/sleeper part of the truck seems like an expensive redundancy, given that it exists only to tow an RV trailer that has far better versions of everything in it. I suppose the inconvenience of using a trailer that isn't functional without the slides out explains this.
@bigtruckbigtravels
@bigtruckbigtravels Год назад
Hi Brian, very astute observations from the video. The sleeper "condo" cab for the truck is for a few reasons: 1) we wanted the ability to camp in the truck of we couldn't get the trailer in to a campsite which we've done at a few places including Yellowstone. On a few occasions, we've also slept in it when our trailer was in for repairs and we couldn't stay in it such as at MorRyde several years ago with our first trailer and while we were having some paint done up in Iowa. 2) This cab also affords us the lower bunk as a dinette which we use 95% of the time in this configuration so we can have our lunch while on the road. Also being a little longer wheelbase gives us a better ride but does limit us on places we can fit. Always a compromise but so far, it's not prevented us from going where we want to go. Thanks for the comment. 😃

Hello to the UK! We use the bunk beds when we camp in the truck or on the rare occasion when we are doing a long travel day and one of us sleeps while the other drives. I tried using the nylon plate but my tolerance is so tight between the hitch and pin that the jaws wouldn't close to fully engage and lock. Great question. I wish I could use the nylon plate.

Awesome truck, and built with a lot of thought and features. Hardware/software questions: Hardware - What are service intervals, costs, and fuel mileage numbers? I imagine oil/filter changes are longer intervals (20K miles?...), probably cost around $300 per visit for an oil change?, and mpg's are 8-10 depending on a lot of things? Software - You went quick inside, what are you using for navigation and communication? Apple Maps on your phone, or a dedicated GPS unit (Garmin or Rand McNally)? And, for comms? I'm a radio guy, so I'm interested in CB and Ham radio, and monitor/use both while traveling... along with a Garmin inReach mini so others can track my travels and keep in touch when I'm out of cell range. Enjoyed the tour, and thank you for sharing. Cheers! Pete in Arizona - KI7LIL
@bigtruckbigtravels
@bigtruckbigtravels Год назад
Hey Pete, we have a regular CB radio and really only use it around large cities to check on any congestion or accidents. We have our truck serviced annually (usually in December), so the mileage is always between 20K - 24K miles and the cost runs about $400-$500 and that includes oil change and all the filters changed (oil, fuel and fuel/water separator). Our trailer is 42K lbs so we get about 6.8 mpg to 7.2 mpg. Our navigation is through two GPS units: a Garmin RV GPS and a Rand McNally Trucker unit. We also use a Rand McNally Trucker Road Atlas which has all the STAA approved routes listed, we use that as a check to the GPS units. Plus, we'll be on Google maps during the trip to insure some routing as well. I think the inReach is a good idea. Thanks for the comment. Glad you're along on the journey. 😁
@peterkunka2694
@peterkunka2694 Год назад
@@bigtruckbigtravels Right on and thank you for the info. Radio's can be useful, service work is typical, and mapping is as easy or complicated as you want to make it. I use Apple Maps, and then Gaia when off-road. My wife loves paper maps, and every year I go to a truck stop and buy her a Rand McNally Atlas for Christmas. She writes, scribbles, circles and makes notes on it during every trip we take. Loves it every year, then stores that "edition" for reference when we want to go back and review a trip for a future visit. The inReach is a very specific tool that can be useful depending on how you use it. Driving Interstates with cell reception the whole way... nope, not worth it. Going on State or County roads, and ultimately ending up stopping and/or boondocking in an area with no cell reception, and wanting to keep in touch with others, then absolutely, yes. Leave the rig and go walking/hiking/biking, if out of cell range, absolutely, yes. Good to chat with you guys. My comments might be "long winded" but I type like I would talk to you around a campfire, asking questions and sharing ideas. That high school typing class in the '80's is really paying off I guess... lol. Peace and cheers! Pete

I wouldn't recommend using a commercial hitch on a production trailer. Hey Doug, we want to get to the UP in the near future. I've heard it's very nice up there. Regarding your title efforts, each state is different on requirements but I can tell you that most DMV's don't understand a semi-truck for personal use to tow a fifth wheel. The key is to get with an experienced DMV associate and have pictures of the unit. Explain to them what you are doing and usually that will work. You may also want to call a supervisor ahead of time to explain and get a "pre-approval" or at least an understanding on their part. Sometime it's smooth but most times it's not. A lot of times it depends on the DMV associate and their experience. I hope that helps.

Why did you choose to put the hitch behind both axles and not put it directly over at least one of them?
@bigtruckbigtravels
@bigtruckbigtravels Год назад
It was geometry and us trying to find a happy median between overall length, storage and maneuverability. If the hitch is moved forward then the rear of the truck must be shorter, losing storage boxes. If the trailer overhang is longer to accommodate a longer truck then the basement storage is eliminated by the front Jack's. Also, the further forward the hitch moves then the trailer doesn't maneuver as well. We tried to strike a balance. Thanks for the comment. 😃

We really enjoyed the DRV and would still be in it if it weren't for those improvements. Lol...I decided to not go down "that path". The path I was talking about is when people title their semi-truck as a motorhome. A semi-truck is not a motorhome because it bears weight or a load on the hitch. A motorhome may tow a trailer but cannot bear weight or a load since it has no 5th wheel type of hitch. I believe this is an insurance issue at some point. A semi-truck may meet the 6 of 8 requirements for an RV/motorhome but it is not a motorhome unless it has been converted to a Super C and then the 5th hitch plate is removed. That was the path... it's not a very popular sentiment because A LOT of people title their tractor this way for cheaper insurance, easier/cheaper titling and less stringent DMV license requirements. My $.02....
