Dirk Hughes is an educator, writer, abstract artist, and avid proponent of living an engaged and fulfilling life. A life-long resident of Michigan, he was raised to appreciate the changing seasons of the world around him, both literally and figuratively, and has devoted his attention ever since to exploring that world and understanding our place within it. With degrees in English and Law, he approaches this exploration passionately and logically, perpetually guided by the motto “be interested in everything”.
Five years ago, he took the first awkward steps on the journey of beekeeping, a subject he had been interested in for years. Originally drawn to it by the prospect of providing his family with a self-sustaining, natural sweetener, he soon found that small-scale, household beekeeping held benefits far beyond the jars of honey he hoped to harvest.

I started a hive this year, I've wanted to for decades and I finally did it. Went along very well with my garden. It's been amazing, I suggest it for everyone.

@@ultraali453 my 7 year old niece had a friend start a hive in the backyard and they donated the honey to the school to sell for charity. The honey was probably the best I have ever had. There is something about fresh honey straight from the hive. Also a fun family activity.

Thank you for interesting and funny video. Best wishes and good luck! If you have some bees in your garden, or insects pests in your garden, you can show it to me too.

Is the audience even alive? Maybe this is a Covid19 filming in which there is no local audience present.

Regular honey is heated. Some people believe the beneficial enzymes are destroyed by the heat.

3:24. Factually incorrect, in a very big way.
@Paul-ug8fy
@Paul-ug8fy 5 лет назад
quite a few major errors in here
@michiganmasonicmuseumandli7153
@@Paul-ug8fy I would welcome specific instances where I made major errors in my presentation. Like anyone, I want to know the subject as best I can and if you think I can improve in that regard I would certainly appreciate you pointing out where exactly I can improve. Thanks in advance for helping me out!
@michiganmasonicmuseumandli7153
So, you're saying drones do have stingers? All the sources I can find state they don't have stingers. I look forward to you helping me understand the subject better. Thanks in advance.
@patrickwalsh6873
@patrickwalsh6873 5 лет назад
@@michiganmasonicmuseumandli7153 Hi, I was actually referring to the comment that 'the drones are there to mate and that's all they do'.
@michiganmasonicmuseumandli7153
@@patrickwalsh6873 I appreciate your clarification. My explanation of the drones role was a rhetorical device to give the presentation a little bit of humor. These TED talks need to be entertaining as well as informational. My purpose in the 14 minutes I had available was to promote beekeeping in the best way I could with the time I had, which means I may have not been able to go into details as deeply as some would like. If you really think my statement about the drones was factually incorrect "in a very big way", please let me know how you would have addressed the role of the drone in a more effective way had you been giving the presentation. You never know, I may give this presentation at some other time and I would definitely consider feedback to make it better. Thanks!
