Bees are essential to our life, but how much do we know about them? When we see a bee, do we imagine an animal that might harm us, or one that is helping to feed us?
Dr Mat Welch goes inside the beehive to explore what life is like for the honeybee. Using stunning imagery from the "More Than Honey" documentary, Mat discusses how research is starting to understand how to combat the worldwide deterioration of bee colonies.
Dr Mat Welch is a research fellow at the Centre for Integrative Bee Research (CIBER) at UWA, researching honey bee genetics, reproduction and immunity. Dr Welch aims to give an insight into the fascinating world of honeybee society where no one gives orders and yet everyone obeys.
This talk uses content from the documentary "More Than Honey" for which CIBER staff were official scientific advisors for the film. Content from the film is used with permission. To find out more about the film, visit morethanhoneyfi...

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

You must learn to share and help bees not to only think on you and think you know more then nature its Impossible to know what nature will do Transfer develop in 100 generations so if one insect Disappear another will bekomm food and so on untill the end... city without bird's and without mosquitos is nice to live but will deal with other problems without cure ...... animal number control is only solution where we all are animals

Beyond bees, I thought the parts about flowers were super interesting. They're naturally and intentionally attractive in smell and appearance to most animals, and in taste to things like bees. They bear fruit and vegetables which are naturally and intentionally delicious and nutritious so that we'll spread their seeds elsewhere. Humans really are ruining such a beautiful and harmonious balance in the world.

All eggs that produce bees are fertilized. They workers determine if the larvae is a queen, a worker, or a drone.

I guess you have to eliminate the stage where the queen that hatches don't kill the other queens and get them out of there to start their own colonies.

I recommend for any beekeeper to establish as large a garden as possible with blooms that last as long as possible throughout the year. Many varieties of not just fruit based options but ones such as, honeysuckle, and other native flowering vines, and all types of fauna that bloom at different times of the year. A constantly changing buffet available that will not help honeybees, but hummingbirds, and butterflies as well. Sidenote; the Mason Bee does not utilize pollen inside a colony so pollinates at 100 times the rate of the honeybee. Feeding bees fruit based syrups also adds nutrient where plain sugar water concentrates do not.

Should the worst happen and bees effectively become extinct in much of the world, drone tech may enable humanity to avert agricultural disaster. Hovering insect-inspired drones are already being developed for surveillance; it's entirely feasible to utilize similar automatons as artificial pollinators. Shrewd robototech entrepreneurs should get to work. Every crisis however dire offers opportunities for innovation and fortune.

It would certainly offer opportunities for fortune and innovation, but I don't think technology will ever be able to replace natural processes, nor should it. That would indeed be the worst that could happen, a tragedy upon tragedy.

We already have a perfectly good pollinator: the honeybee. Let's focus on colony health and preserve biodiversity. We don't even fully understand the importance of bee behavior such as the waggledance, which may help design those wonderful little drones of yours. We also have a potential antiviral drug from bee propolis. Drones? As a last resort, but for now I'd rather play the role of gardener than that of god.
