There have been dozens of Genesis "clone" consoles released along the years - and most of them have been complete trash. Following on their successful SNES clone, the Super NT, Analogue is back with their take on the ultimate HD Genesis console - the Mega SG.
With the Genesis Mini/Classic out from Sega, is there any need for another Genesis clone on the market? Let's put the Mega SG through it's paces and determine if it really is the ultimate Sega Genesis that it claims to be!

It's a bummer we have so many ways to enjoy Sega Genesis that you have to consider the cost and pix quality over the awesome library of games. I love the Mega SG, but it does have some questionable options. Ultra core is great!

Which model Genesis was used for the HD Retrovision cable comparison? I've read that model 1s output a better RGB signal than model 2s. Edit: I confused audio with video lol. I use the Retrovision cables on a model 1 to a Panasonic plasma and it looks pixel perfect. Would be curious how the Analogue could improve it!

It's a model 2 for most of the captures in this video. A few clips were taken from earlier sessions (which featured a model 1).

I picked up one of these as well and it's a fantastic unit. Great review, it was very thorough. For people that want to play Genesis stuff via HDMI and don't want to deal with upscalers, the Mega SG is easily the best way to go.

Did mega sg firmwares 3.8, 4.0, and 4.1 ever get released? I just likecto have backups of all the firmwares just incase. I did the same thing for the super nt.

I had my non tmss model 1 Genesis running rgb through Frameister and still bought the Mega SG. No regret as its fantastic. If theres ever a proper solution from Analogue for the Saturn I'll sell my Frameister. I'd have to buy the Analogue SNES tho. Vicious cycle!

I'm almost working my way towards two setups... HD Retrovision cables + a CRT and a 480p LCD for one setup - and clone consoles + HDMI native devices running into my projector for another.

@@RetroTechSelect Just 1 TV here. Frameister has Saturn n SNES rgb, Dreamcast s video and a component switch box handling og xbox, wii/gcube, ps2/ps1. Rest are hdmi, 3 to TV, 3 to hdmi switch box. My Samsung is about 10 years old and actually does 240p along with 480i, 480p. Definitely fear buying another new TV as I doubt they'd do any of that let alone have 4 hdmi inputs. Its madness but we do love it don't we?!

Great point about the Sg's overall value proposition. Another big advantage is not having the expense and hassle of console modding if you want optimal video and audio quality. The original Genesis has sharp RGB output, probably as good as the Mega Sg if you use an OSSC or Framemeister. But getting rid of the jailbars and the best sound quality requires a mod board for your Model 2 Genesis, plus labor costs if you're not handy with a soldering iron. Same with the Super Nt, which requires tracking down a specific motherboard revision of the console and additional modding if you want to match the SNT's sharpness/color accuracy.

Yeah, I just watched a video on the "triple bypass" for the Genesis yesterday. That's a whole lot of work to stick to original hardware when it's arguable how "original" it still is after an extensive mod.
