Dr. Lin from Sunrise Urology discusses TURP misinformation and give you truths about the procedure as he performs it. Dr. Lin practices at Sunrise Urology in Gilbert, Arizona. www.SunriseUrol... #BPH #ProstateEnlargement #RotoRooter
I had my TURP procedure done in Sept. and two month on now I am doing really well. Just a rare amount of leakage, but otherwise doing OK. Prior to this procedure I was pretty much a wreck mentally, worrying about it. I can truthfully say it was an easy thing to go through. You get to the hospital, vitals taken, change into a patient gown, the anesthesiologist and urologist come and speak with you asking if you have any last minute questions. You're wheeled into surgery, probably within 10 to 15 minutes you're asleep, and you wake up in PACU (recovery). A few hours later you're discharged home with a catheter. In my case, 4 days later the cath is taken out. This is not as bad as some describe it, and it's over in about 2 seconds time. Voiding without the cath can be a bit painful the first 3 or four times, but by the next day things ease up. All in all, not a bad experience as I feared. I can now pee normally again. I would recommend this procedure to anyone having these urinary symptoms. Ray
I'm 7 dyas out. My experience was very similar.... except the catheter was removed next day. I'm excited to see how things improve even more over the coming weeks.
Thanks for sharing that Ray, I had a TURP a little two weeks ago and had some complications but i think it had to do with not drinking enough water. My Urologists' isn't so easy to get a hold of. Still have not seen him or heard from him to this date only with the PA which is really helpful
Excellent video! I saw 5 urologist before I found someone who I felt like I connected with, and trusted. I'm on day 7 post TURP. It was done OP, by Dr. Ashley Brandon at Cone Health System. I'm doing great.... except I hate not being able to go to the gym or return to cycling. I'm so impatient. I'm doing lots of walking and theraband activities. Walked 2 miles this morning and then climbed stairs to my 5th floor apartment. Writing my dr now to get her opinion on when I can set-up my indoor rollers so I can spin. TURP IS THE BEST DECISION I HAVE MADE IN MY LIFE. I'm 59 and now peeing like I was a teenager.
Thank you for the video. On June 17 the doctor will do a balloon dilation of urethral stricture with Optilume drug-coated balloon to dilate the urethral stricture and make sure that it is open for the T.U.R.P. surgery. The doctor has to make sure the opening in the urethra is wide enough to get the T.U.R.P. tool inside. Then the T.U.R.P. surgery on June 28. I have had some form of catheter for 7 months.
His Urologist has left it on us to decide Turp or HoLEP, wish to choose the one that is less invasive but cannot figure which one of the two to proceed with.
Hello Dr Lin, Thank you for this info. It helps somewhat in putting me more at ease about this procedure. I've been considering this procedure for a couple of years now as the Tamsalusin doesn't seem to be working anymore. I'm 60 years old and have had the BPH symptoms for about 5 years now. The TURP procedure itself doesn't bother me. Even the recovery just seems to be an inconvenience. I've done some research and listened to recovering patient's stories, some good and some not so good. I think my main concern is scar tissue developing a few months post TURP and having to keep having procedures to correct that. I have had imaging, a trans-rectal ultrasound, and a cystoscopy and my urologist recommends the TURP but has left that up to me. In the meantime he has put me on 5mg once a day Cialis. I didn't realize this was used to treat BPH. I've been taking this for a little over 3 months now and it has made a huge difference. I feel much less full after urination, stream is much improved and I only get up once a night where it used to be 4 or more. Also the Cialis has made a huge impact in the bedroom. I've had no failures and am noticeable firmer. My wife is younger than me so the Cialis has been a win win for me. I'm concerned though about the relief I'm getting from the Cialis may be just temporary. Maybe you have already addressed the scar tissue and the Cialis concerns that I have but I would be interested in hearing your thoughts. Thanks
@Sunrise Urology Thank you for the response. I go back to my urologist/surgeon in August. I will probably go ahead and schedule the TURP then, but for now I'm enjoying the double benefits of the Cialis.
I served in the Air Force for 30 years and appreciate your comments and wearing red on Fridays. I am writing to you because I’m 82 and like your dad I’m on my third catheter due to urine retention and my doctor is recommending a TURP which I’m going to have doe after I get better from this. I listened to some patients on UTUBE describe all the problems they have had after a TURP, mostly blood and blood clots that they had to flush out with big bags of saline or distilled water, your method and results are what I’m going to tell my doctor about and hope he can do the same. Right now my biggest problem is where the catheter tube goes into the head of my penis- it is very sore and uncomfortable. Is there anything I can use to numb the pain or at least treat the soreness. Thank you for your very informative and helpful presentations. I live in San Antonio, TX and my try to get an appointment with you!
Thank you so much for this very informative video and all the other ones you made about the TURP. I am 64 and I have been suffering from the usual BPH issues for over 7 years. Got the Rezum procedure done 4 years ago but it did not work for me. I was pretty apprehensive about the TURP mostly due to misinformation but your videos and my current urologist convinced me that this is the best option for me.
Your process of closing out all the bleeders is quite nice and makes for a speedy recovery. It has me wondering why on earth all urologists doing TURPs do not do this. Do you have any idea why that is?
Hello Dr. Lin, I've listened to you few times and I really like how you take the time to educate the public in details and share how you go about different procedures!! Do you work with people in a different State? Thanks, Conrad
I had my TURP Surgery on August 29th, 9 days after TURP, my urethra is still inflamed causing some urinary retention, based out of your professional experience, is this normal? The good thing is that I am voiding normally though.
I had my turp done on May 5th, everything looked good until the bladder spasms started that are not very comfortable, took the catheter out and i couldn't pee so i had to leave the hospital with a catheter in for a week.
Got a turp done August 22 2022. Going on 11 weeks. Still bleeds of and on. Now my urologist is sending me for a cat scan. Pending on results he wants to do a scope. Or meds to stop bleeding. Even talking about doing another turp. Hell no I will not do another one. This has been the worst recovery ever. Why is it still bleeding going on 11 weeks ? Clotting is still coming out from penis. This is not an easy procedure. Bunch of lies on the media.
Your experience is definitely not typical. Most patients are not bleeding this far put from TURP. Good idea to work with your urologist to determine cause and solution.
Excellent video, 3 months post turp and everything is going great. My doc said everything you covered but never mentioned retro ejaculation You must have trained him. I am still on finasteride and flomax. Do you think this is needed after turp? I would like to quit if possible. Again thanks for video and remembering us vets
Sam, I stop finasteride and tamsulosin the day I perform TURP. Those meds are usually not needed, especially tamsulosin. Thanks for sharing your experience.
Hi Doctor, is Holep Laser less invasive than TURP for an aged person? Also is the post surgery irrigation method the same in both procedures? Is there a greater chance of a resurgery required in Holep? Have watched all ur videos but cannot find an answer.
HoLEP is highly effective for larger prostates. Bladder irrigation (CBI - Continuous Bladder Irrigation) is likely the same after both surgeries. HoLEP is riskier for less experienced surgeons to perform.
Dr. Lin I have really been enjoying your videos , which are extremely informative. I have been suffering with BPH and have been scheduled for the TURP surgery in February. To be very honest with you I have been ambivalent to get the procedure and have opted not to take the medication that my urologist has prescribed because of the side effects that I was experiencing . He prescribed finasteride and silodosin, which was affecting my sex life. I wanted to know if it is possible to have the procedure without having to take the medications? Thank you for your helpful information.
I just finished my procedure 7 days ago. I was taking finasteride and another Rx for nearly 3 years. It was totally messing with my affect and I hated it. Just 7 days off of them and I feel amazing. So basically you stop taking the Rx's once the surgery is complete.
I personally prefer TURP, as I see fewer patients with frequency, urgency, and night time urinary frequency after TURP vs. PVP. That said, in the hands of an experienced surgeon, both are good procedures. I perform TURPs as outpatients. IF the patient requires a catheter, that catheter is removed in the office usually in less than 24 hours.
Thanks for this. Any insights into the process for a 57 year old healthy man with 140grm prostate? Lots of symptoms - irritative and outflow - progressive x 10 years really but settled for a couple of years now on anticholinergics and Tamsulosin. No ejaculatory issues to date and nocturia settled with once daily straight cath - all an attempt by me (and supported by my considerate surgeon) to delay surgery. Things are progressive and now facing some from of intervention but would like to preserve sexual function as a quality of life concern. With respects to many sites I find on RU-vid, older men predominate and it is hard to get resources for someone of my vintage. Good wishes to all readers of this - this is a common and important men's health issue.
I'm 59 and just had TURP 7 days ago. It took 3 years.... and I saw 5 urologist before I found someone who I felt like I connected with, and trusted. My surgery was done OP,. I'm doing great.... except I hate not being able to go to the gym or return to cycling. Apparently it's going to take a few weeks. :( I'm so impatient. I'm now peeing like I was a teenager.
Doctor I am unable to decide what is minimally invasive for my 70yr old father. Will be grateful to what you recommend Holep or Turp? His Ultrasound Post Void Residue PVR is 370 ml Urodynamics report- Normal Capacity Bladder with Normal Proprioception. Normal Compliance. High Detrussor Pressures A And Poor Urine Flow Rates. Bladder Outflow Tract Obstruction
I had Beam Radiation and ended up with Radiation Cystitis, a disease that there is no cure for caused by the radiation hurting surrounding organs. My urologist has offered TURP but he doesn't give a very good chance of success. He said I would probably end up with blood in the urine, Incontinence and retractable ejaculation (at 77 I am not looking to have more children), also urgency and frequency problems. I was in bad shape as I was unable to even defecate without laxatives at the end of the 8 week program. The bowl movement has improved in the last three months. I try to urinate before I catheterize and can normally get any where from 50 to a 100ml to pass and then It just seems to stop. I am in Akron Ohio so seeing you would not be available, but I was wondering if you knew anyone in my area that YOU would recommend or do you also feel that because of the radiation disease I would not be helped by further treatments. Currently I am catheterizing every six hours (four times a day) it works, but it is a quality of life issue. Any information would be helpful as I am currently depressed and dont see much hope. I thank you for any help and sorry to bother you but you seem to be a caring doctor.
I am not able to urinate by myself. I've been using a catheter for the last 20 years or so. 4 times a day. Will this surgery help with that? However, I can' go 4 or 5 hours before I think about using the catheter. Although, I'm getting real tired of looking for a private bathroom wherever I am so.... Will this help?
Question: since turp is done thru the urethra, does the cutting away of the prostate also cut and destroy the urethra? How is the urethra restored after turp?
I was diagnosed with BPH and put on meds. On the same day I can pee like a race horse, and then hours later I dribble with weak stream. How can this be? Prostate doesn't expand and contract during the day...or from week to week. It is either enlarged or not.
I have a question. I really hope you can enlighten me, please. Is there any way to find out if the reason for my inability to empty my bladder is due to a large prostate or is it that I am unable to squeeze my bladder sufficiently to empty it. I normally can urinate anywhere between 40% and 60% and then once a day I do a self-intermittent catheterizing to finish emptying my bladder. This has kept me from getting UTI's. I am interested in a procedure to be able to empty my bladder. But if my problem is an inability to squeeze my bladder enough to empty it, then doing a procedure to open the prostate would be a waste of time and money.
Does the patient have a choice on ga or spinal if he wants to be aware of how the surgery is been done? Why if you do not want to be knock out? Do you have sodium chloride to clean the capsule?
Is the Ejaculation Preservation TURP the same as a TUIP? If not, what is the difference between the 2 proceedures? My main issue is a large median lobe. I had a urolift, which is still doing its job, 2 years ago.
You are the 1st, I've seen, to mention a TURP which has Ejaculation Preservation. Of the 4 year dealing with this, that procedure has never been mentioned, so I am assuming they don't know the procedure, thus why I asked on this form. @@Sunriseurology1
Sir my prostate gland size 24 gm and PSA is 1.08 ng there was no infection no bleeding but uroflow very slow at day। 6 time and at night 2 times urine passing, blodder to stricture problem.TURP operation is necessary for me. Please inform me.
I use bipolar TURP exclusively now, and no longer PVP. Two different ways to achieve same outcomes. In my hands, TURP patients do really well, and it costs the healthcare system less money overall when compared to PVP. I also don' t have to wear special goggles when performing TURP.
I was told cause I pee blood I had ubnormal cells and got a cti done in the Philippines and have a bladder mass 2.2 cm with enlarged prostate. Is this something u can do and what is a general cost of this since I have no health insurance. Thank u
I had the turp recently and went home with the catheter for 5 days. On Monday the catheter was removed and I had to return to have a new catheter as I could not pass urine. I will go again next Monday and try to have catheter removed, my doctor feels this may be due to swelling that will improve. I hope so!
I had a TURP at the age of 50, ten years ago and it was the biggest mistake I made in my life. I still blame my urologist who told me that the sex and the feeling will be exactly the same. Well, I had a big surprise when I had sex the first time after the TURP. The feeling was exactly the same until that climax. That was the most pathetic climax I had and even worse, it never got any better. So, I'm just surprised at the fact that anybody can think that a climax with the force that semen is shooting out will be exactly the same as a climax where something flows calmly back into the bladder. Of course, my urologist never heard of any other men with the same problem and when I told him that I can bring him two others with the same problem, he got very angry. I got the idea that he doesn't know that there is a difference between erection and climax. I just had to write this as It definitely made my life better for not running to the toilet so many times, but if I knew that I would never have a good climax again I wouldn't have done it at all.
I learned early on about retrograde when I used FloMax When I see a doc say the climax is the same, they obviously haven't experienced retrograde. I've been holding off on any surgeries because of the retrograde side effects. I have a large median lobe, so my options are limited. Down to 2, Prostate Arterial Embolism, and TUIP( dual or single incision, no tissue removal). I would prefer the PAE but, in my area, I need a referral to the Inventional Radiologist from the Urologist, which hasn't developed yet, still trying.
