More Uncertainty Than Ever Before Eruption Number 8 - Likely Weeks Rather Than Days

The last 2 days were a bit strange due to a bit overcooked statement coming from our own institution so this video touches on PR problems And how easy it is to misinterpret scientific information with consequences that appear in headlines all over the world. It's of course impossible to predict when the next eruption starts, but I don't expect it to start soon and my next volcano tour will therefore be short to document landscape changes between eruptions 7-8.
The footage in this video is however from eruption number 3 since I'm talking so much of volcano tourism and we see well how important it is to have SAR teams nearby and stay in control, even if the area is closed!

I don't see an eruption 8 but rather an eruption 7, part 2. The rock in the sill is likely hotter and more pliable so probably able to inflate more without having to really spike pressure, sort of like an old rubber dodge ball vs a new one. I don't think absolute deflection is a reliable indicator anymore. But with a continuous flow of magma through the network vs having to work around a plug, I really do see any change as a sudden increase in the flow of the ongoing eruption vs a huge 1-4KM long blowout like 5 weeks ago. If there is a new vent in 7.2, I suspect it will be where those gases have been pouring out about 1/2KM north of the active cone. That area is still warmer than the surroundings and thus represents a path of least resistance with somewhat direct access to the magma stores.. That is my SWAG.

Given that the magma storage under Swartsengi has now filled up close to the minimum volume previously associated with the formation of new dikes (with associated earthquakes) or eruptions, the Met Office listed several possible scenarios, including the development of additional fissures or vents in unknown locations, as well as increased outflow from the currently active vent. As pointed out by Shawn Willsey in his latest RU-vid update, this situation has not been encountered oreviously in the Svartsengi/Grindavik area, but one that could pose significant and unforseeable dangers for tourists. Why doesn't the Civil Protection explain this more clearly? Thanks for keep a cool head, Gylfi. Love your thermal imagery! ❤

I can't judge whether there is the capacity - in terms of e.g. rescue teams - to allow the eruption to be opened. However, if I were the government, I'd consider opening it (if/when it can be done safely) and charge a 1000 kr contribution to help the people and little enterprises of Grindavík. Or maybe if they don't make it mandatory they could still strongly suggest tourists to donate such an amount. All the money earned in that way should be directly used to support Grindavík, except maybe a contribution (at cost price) towards operating that volcano tourism (e.g., the rescue teams and their equipment). That way, the volcano tourism could be used to provide something useful towards Grindavík (and potentially calm the tourists' conscience along the way). It would of course not be enough to help everyone to get a new home but it might help to keep some local businesses alive and/or support people who struggle finding a new job, etc. Maybe the money collected in that way could be handed to the Grindavík town council who may have a better overview of who is in need of support, than the central government?

Multiple things can happen. The conduit is only supplying 3.5 cubic meters/sec worth of material while the magma chamber has uplift above it and some estimations are yielding some 5+ cubic meters /sec. There could very well be a sibling eruption, or even a revitalization the current eruption.

@@JustIcelandic Try hiking the Mt. St. Helens backcountry. Bring water. Start feeling funny or run out of water, head back. Fun fact: State Route 504 is still washed out before you get to Loowit Viewpoint and Johnston Ridge. You could visit Windy Ridge on the Backside. One of the roads is washed out. But you should be able to access it from Randle on the White Pass Highway, US Route 12. Then go on Forest Road 25 until you get to the intersection with Forest Road 99. Then drive up 99 to Windy Ridge. Last time I drove that scared the crap out of me! What road signs there are, are in miles and there are plenty of miles. Top off fuel tank in Randle. Your starter motor, battery and alternator should be less than a year old. Engine recently tuned up with new oil and filter. Plenty of tread on the tires. Bring cooler with water and food. Warm clothing in case the weather changes. Make sure it is summertime with sun in the forecast for the next week. If you decide to leave your car and go hiking, remember it is a bit like going into that Japanese suicide forest. You might not intend to commit suicide but . . .

Hi Gylfi. I hope you are well. Thanks for the new video and update. 100% agree that without assistance that's not the place to wonder around but do you know why civil defense doesn't want to open the eruption site? If it sketchy weather or just building the facilities or why? Best regards Rob

As always, Gylfi, thank you for your level-headed response (again) & the breathe-taking footage. My first thought with this "dilemma" came from common sense Benjamin Franklin in 1735 who told the people of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA who were threatened by fires.... "An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure." He was right, of course, and they agreed.😊
