This was 11 years ago. 11 years before this news story, it was the same story and has really never stopped. In 2020, 2021 & 2022, moving to Austin has just become more intense.
i'd move to NYC just because there's more to do and and more people from all over the world to meet. i went to austin for a week, was thinking about moving there, when i left it, I knew I'd never be back. nice city, just not for me.
Funny Houston was on the list of places people want to move to. I hate it here there are no real job opportunities unless you are in the Medical Field or Gas and Oil. And then other simple jobs make it hard for you to get hired with bogus assessment tests, the only thing left is low paying food jobs with bad management. I've literally been looking for a better job since 2013, and nothing but low income jobs will hire, can't make a living with $7.25 and live a stable life. I even tried college to try to get a better job, lead to nothing but broken dreams and debt. I visited Austin once and did not want to leave. I hope the job market is better because Houston's sucks. DO NOT MOVE HERE!!
Austin is like the antidote to cities like NYC or San Francisco and vise versa. Austin caters to creative types of people who just wanna lay back and relax more so than in larger more world class cities. Obviously, Austin is not to be compared with NYC. NYC rivals as the greatest city in the world. But its good that America has cities like Austin, Portland or Oakland where the towns are a bit more laid back, yet booming and you still get to meet great people.
Before moving to Austin, consider this: The traffic is bad, really bad, especially on I-35 and the Mopac, taxes are high, rent is high, it's very liberal, a little too liberal for me. They've banned plastic shopping bags in Travis County. They have horrible public transit. The list goes on and on.
Consider this: Plastic bags are just a terrible idea and take a 1000 years to degrade. The Midland/Odessa area where im from has rent for a small apartment for no less than 1500-2000 compared to austin's 600 to 1400 much better quality apartments. The ability to socialize with other people my age and things to do are so numerous i couldnt name them. They have hundreds if not thousands of parks and wildlife as well as rivers and lakes. (doesnt sound impressive unless you come from a desert like where im from) Also Midland/Odessa has like 10 small acre sized parks. They also have so many concerts and the night life is beyond impressive. They have so many more job opportunities with better pay. I honestly think its a no brainer. And honestly they are the nicest bunch of people i have ever met in my life. As a fellow texan i couldnt think of a better place to move.
I lived in Austin back in the 80's .. seems alot has changed. To many kids and the whole " BIg CIty " wanna be feel ,, has ruined that place.. Living in Austin way back was a wonderful experience, wonderful people, beautiful place,, Maybe I am getting old. but these " Hipster " kids turn me off and they seem to be trying to hard to turn that once nice place into another " Big city " feel. ..guess I will stay here in NYC area.. not so many " Kids " all packed into one place :-)
Well, I live in Austin. 4 generations. My family still lives in the same house on East side off Canterbury 78702 close to Cesar Chavez. The influx of people is killing the culture. Everyone needs to pick somewhere else to live. It is overrated, move to Dallas.
