I believe it’s actually both. There are more younger legit beards these days but we are also very prone to noticing them. Love the morning food for thought!
SoCal here. Around here I really only see short beards on guys in their 20s. Medium to med-long beards don't start showing up until 30+. Now if we're talking any length, I do see more beards in general. The guys in their 20s seem to be rocking Tom Selleck style mustaches with their mullets.
I think it's like when you buy a new car, you see more of that type of car. We have beards so we notice them more, especially significant length beards.
In the US per adult male ages 18 - 28, do you think there is a higher ratio of beards as compared to 10 years ago though? Both could be true at the same time
I’m definitely seeing more beards everywhere and love the awkward moment when you see someone with a less of a beard than yours and you compliment there beard- it definitely feels great 💥
I live right I the middle of a town centre and I have noticed a lot of younger people with big thick beards everywhere I look almost BUT when I look for people without beards I see them to and many more people don't have beards I think it does depend on weather you are looking or not Beards are definitely on the up tho !!
As a Sikh, I've always taken notice of mighty beards, as keeping unshaved beard is a requirement for Sikh men, but I have definitely noticed waaay more beards in the past decade than I have before amongst non-Sikhs, especially in fields where beards were not really accepted before (office jobs, service industry, construction, etc).
I think or believe it to be frequency bias. How often do you find yourself noticing how many other people are driving the same car you drive? That's frequency bias at work! It's a part of human nature to want to notice or to be noticed as a "member of the tribe". My beard has been grey/white for several years now so I tend to notice ANY beards but, yeah, it's starting to look like beards are gaining in popularity. It's a subject that's perfect for men. Do nothing for a while and watch the results. Now, go out and buy a bunch of really neat tech to "sculpt" that bad boy, sorta like the guy who has the perfectly trimmed, healthiest hedge... except WE get to carry our hedges with us! 😃
Frequency bias is for sure there! However, I don’t believe it’s mutually exclusive. I think there are also more beards today, as compared to even just 10 years ago
It is an increase in the number of beards... and not just stubble beards or just 5 o'clock shadows... or just some fuzz... dudes with fully lush beards and some even longer than yours Dan. And what's cool... I see it even in law enforcement, in offices, and in hospitals. And we're talking about guys who I know never grew hair period. All of a sudden either COVID or no shave November extended year round and dudes who are usually clean-cut grew their manes... and it's everywhere. Yeah, the clean-shave dudes are still there but more and more you get different looks, ideas, and styles. What's funny though I see less beard products in the stores. Like last year they were all over the place, now you might find 2 or 3 companies in pharmacy or Walmart or something. Could be a correlation
I think more younger guys have significant beards than ever before. I also see the 80's mustache making a comeback with the younger generation too. I'm liking the look of younger guys with bigger beards, but I'm not ready for the return of the 80's stache. They look OK on older guys, but kind of look almost like a joke on a younger guy. Sorry, just my opinion.
Great video & topic! Perhaps it’s both an illusion & actually more beards. Illusion like when you buy a car you see more of that type. Actual because the beard industry is growing & more men have access to quality products & beard education. Thank you Dan & keep it up!
Fun video Dan, I live in East Tennessee so there are a lot of mullets and mustaches on the young guys here, Morgan Walland is a big deal here lol. There are also a lot of beard too, I’ve honestly seen more big long beards here in my local area than other places that I have traveled to and spent some time visiting. I took two, one week vacations this summer, Florida and Louisiana and while there was some nice beards there I saw more young men wearing mustaches in those areas. I think the mustaches are pretty big this summer, but that is my observation, because I’ve seen more this year locally and while traveling. Oddly enough I have spent some time in Virginia and facial hair is pretty rare in my visit
I’m 23 with a 6 inch beard and a 9 inch mustache! Going for my first yeard and I’m 7 months in. I do feel like I’m seeing more guys with beards my age, some guys I work with are growing theirs and I’ve been copying pasting the advice I get from your channel!
I'm a 28 year old guy and currently on the run with a non trimmed 1,5 year beard. The beard is around 9 inch long so I think I'm the type of guy you're talking about 😂 unfortunately I don't see that many people in my age range with a long beard in the country where I'm living, wish I did.
You know, I wish I had tried to grow a full beard at a younger age. Some societal stigmatism and required business appearances kept me from trying, but I didn’t go full beard until my late 30’s. In either event I have one now and it’s a glorious pivot in lifestyle for me. There’s definitely illusion bias going on. I had the same experience when I got a Jeep and the same with the Ram I have now. However, there’s definitely more beards out there in general. I feel like since the middle 2010’s the beards have been in style and there’s a lot more beard care products out there getting us all hooked!
I think everything goes in trends! With that think younger beards are elevated these days more with products etc. but could be because I’m just open to it. So it probably is both lol! 🍻 🍻🍻
I've been thinking about a 4runner as my next vehicle for a while. Noticing them everywhere now. I would say there are more significant beards but also I notice them more.
I was actually of the impression of the reverse. Only because I've seen so many old photos (I mean really old) around the turn of the 20th century where the beards were absolutely incredible. I feel like that kind of beard coverage isn't as common anymore.
Frequency Bias/Illusion is much easier to say that Baader-Meinhof phenomenon! Personally I think beards have been trending for some time, like at least a decade. We also see mote celebs with them, so that probably has an effect.
I do believe you see more beards. The police department that I work for is actually talking about allowing beards. Luckily, tomorrow is my last day and I am fully retiring. I shaved for the last time yesterday morning. Here comes the beard with retirement.
Hi Dan, I am in the fourth month of my year so I am not a good reference. Nevertheless, I also have the idea that beards or any form of facial hair is very common and that more and more younger men have a beard. In a study I read that beards have lost their old-fashioned image and are now seen as hip and modern by men of all ages. In another study it is indicated that on average women find men with beards more attractive and especially the (heavy) stubble. Anyway, it is becoming more and more beautiful and diverse on the street, in the pub and at work. Positive! Thanks for your work. Very inspiring. Keep it up!
I actually do think more younger men grow beards now. I think especially with the rise of beard content online, there is some correlation. I’m all here for it. Frequency bias does come into play, but even then it seems like more than just that. I have seen a decently high number of people I assumed were much older because of their beards, but then it turns out they’re like my age or slightly younger 😂. It is always nice to have people in my age group who grow beards. Can compare notes.
I would say that in the UK there are more men between ages of 25 and 45 with facial hair than without. Medium to long beards for those in late 20s up I would say has been pretty common for the last 5-7 years. I think it ties in with employers in the UK being far more relaxed about employee appearance
Same hear Dan...seems the darker the hair is the thicker the beard is. This also goes with guys that are ginger. Omg im 60 and wonder what mine would looked like 30 years ago. Mine is so thick still at my age. Thumbs up for your videos.
I think it’s like the light blue Rav 4 I bought 4 years ago, something I began to notice after I bought one; observation bias! No, not more beards here, just more visual
Hey up Dan I remember a few year's ago when every guy rocked one I kinda noticed though in the UK especially my local area there's a lot more clean shaven or short stubble guys around. I am in my 40s and rock a longer beard mines kinda curly though not has straight has yours but you use a heat brush right so that would be why I suspect more time spent on your sacred beard then I spend on mine I do the essentials ( brush comb shampoo beard oil etc etc ) but nothing to fancy. I do personally think there is less bearded guys around but do Admit that a fellow bearded guy would catch my attention I wouldn't approach him in case they thought I was wired or something but I would definitely think that's a cool beard .🧔
This is a supply/demand issue influenced by declining population. Younger generations have for many years asked their workplaces to change appearance standards, but industry didn't need to listen to that as long as jobs are hyper competitive for the worker through an abundant workforce. With the retirement of the largest generation of people occurring within the last decade, the power dynamic is shifting away from industry towards the individual because there are literally not enough people to maintain infrastructure built by a larger workforce. Now younger generations can make demands, like beards and tattoos and companies can't afford to say no to trivial things because it's harder than ever to have a growing business.
I’m going to say it’s both. I work in retail, so I see a lot of people on a daily basis, but there’s also plenty of people I work with that have beards as well. More jobs, I feel, are allowing beards in the workplace, so you have more people growing them out. I think younger people are also starting to realize that societal norms are changing, so it’s more acceptable for them to grow fuzz on their faces.
Great video. I’m not sure if it’s the illusion you mentioned but I am also seeing more younger guys with beards. I also love 4Runners they are nice trucks.
hey brother, loving the content! what’s the consensus on using facial cleansers to clean your beard? i use a CeraVe facial cleanser to wash my face and beard every morning/night and am wondering if i should make the switch to a dedicated beard wash.
I have always had facial hair since a teenager but I never noticed beards as much until I started growing my beard out and taking care of it. Is it just me but when you have a medium to long beard and you pass someone with a similar length there is like a stare off between the two where you don't want to keep looking but you do and of course, you or the other person gives the compliment, hey nice beard man.
The caveman days are coming back or is the younger generation just getting lazy or are they watching Dan c bearded and saying this guy has a cool beard guess I’ll grow one keep cool Dan love the show 👍🏻
We reached peak beard around. 6-7 years ago with the hipsters I think, then a significant decline in face folicles was seen. I have seen a rise in slightly silly twirly moustaches recently but not noticed an uptick in beards, at least in this side of the pond anyway.
Im 53 and still moving weights around in the gym. Had a good look around the other day at other males much younger than me. Beards and longer stubble of all different styles were more prominent than the clean shaven or less than 3 days growth. I definitely feel beards are on the up and more acceptable.
Definitely around my area. I have seen more and more beards of all ages but definitely the younger 20 somethings have better opportunities getting jobs now with a beard than we did. We were in our twenties.
Mullets have been popular in upstate NY for a few years now lol. Always seem to be a fair about of beards in this area, I definitely notice more since I've grown one. Think there is a little increase in beards the last few years.
I think outside this smaller community there is still a trend towards beards as its simply a good style option. One up and coming content creator i love who has gained a lot of traction, mostly for his humor, has joked you need at least 1 or more of a beard, glasses, or hat to make it on youtube 😅 We still have classic celebrities but these days (almost) everyone has the idea they may someday want to be mildly internet famous so any form of making oneself identifiable is more at the forefront rather then id guess where before there was a few strict ideals spawned from tv/hollywood personalities
I think it's more common in the country than it is in the city. In the country, people hunt and usually have a beard well in the city. People don't hunt so there's no need to have a beard. When it was more accepted to have a beard and you find a channel like yours, people are keeping them.
Yes, more young and older men with beards. Now that weed is legal in most states, ha..ha! Hey man, let's grow a beard and be mello, lol! This could be an epic beard generation via DNA family life cycle. Plus beard care products and tips everywhere now. 👍✌
Illusion biased is a thing. Every time I get a brand new car... I am the only one with it for like a week... and then on the road you may find 7-10 of the same car on the road and it irritates me to death.
I'm 33 now and I grew my first big full beard at 28 and haven't looked back since , and had various styles since I got my first chin hairs , which was at about 15 I think, I had everything for a soul patch ( that was all I could grow a kid) , to a goatee and chin strap , like the thick one with big goatee, because again: that was what I could grow in my late teens to early 20's so I loved beards for like forever. My parents hated any kind of facial hair, but I still did my thing and grew whatever facial hair I had at the time 😂
Since I’ve been taking better care of my beard in the last few months, and getting more into the beard care world I’ve noticed that I see beards even when I’m not looking for them for instance I was at my states fair and all I could see was beards so I believe beards are becoming more common and more accepted
I really don’t notice more young people with beards. I do however see more and more beards out there then before. I’m new to having a beard and have noticed more since growing one
As a younger individual myself being 25 years old I haven't really noticed many of my peers growing out their facial hair to the extent that it would be a good beard or a mid to long-range beard. I mainly see stubbly beards or clean-shaven individuals but not very many young mid to long beards.
I agree Dan that beards are much more common than a few years ago. Perhaps the lockdown with people working from home has been the reason for more beards.
Great topic Dan! I’d like to think that over 10 years of beard care industry and seeing the products on big box store shelves has encouraged younger folks to try out the bearded life!
In the past, beards were for extreme groups. Flowerpower and Harley drivers for example. People who didn't want to be associated with that lifestyle of basically, drugs, alcohol and (for Harley riders) violence, a lot of people reverted from such a lifestyle by not having a beard at all. As today it isn't a symbol of an extremist group, people started having them more often. Also, we started to eat lots more meat with hormones so the animals grow faster to keep up with our appetite. That's partially the reason why girls have there periodes at an earlier age than say, 30 years ago. Same goes for beards. We physically become adults faster.
Hey Dan, what is your opinion on Captain Fawcett beard products? mostly oil and the beerd wash. Ingridient wise primarily. Does it count as pretty natural-ish company? Inhad their oil at the barbers and damn it smells and feels good, but would be awesome to get the approvement from You too
@@DanCBearded Thank you so much for quick answer, buying the IPA gentle wash then and the Nebula oil is bananas how good it felt and smelled, and yeah pretty expensive
Congratulations on the 4Runner. That is an amazing vehicle that will last you forever just maintain the oil maintenance and you are golden. Also it’s the “Red Car Effect” I believe. When you drive how many red cars do you notice? If you arnt looking for them you won’t notice them. Once you are looking they are everywhere! Great video. Also there is more education out there on how to take care of beards so men at younger ages are more likely to try to grow and maintain it because they have the tools out there.
I think personally it’s a bit of both. I’ve seen tons of beards my entire life. That being said I see more and more well kept/groomed beards than before!
Not in NYC where I live, and neither in Boston where I' just stayed for a few days. Yes in Portland Maine am there now Lots of medium and long beards ... esp. in their 2O's. . Don't know if it is recent change or was for a while. Average ok grooming but area might use an upscale or specialty barber IMHO for the small amount of the city whole City I've seen. Both gentrification move inside from big cities as NY etc.
I live in the Pacific Northwest and beards have been a thing for a long time. What I've noticed in the past 10-20 years is the increase of beards on teenagers in high school. Frequency illusion experiment: play slug bug with your kids on the next 30 minute drive.
Great topic! I do see more younger beards lately. Maybe because jobs are more relaxed on it these days? The one thing I’ve noticed with these beards, is that they’re rather dry and messy looking. Maybe they need some DanC!
I agree, I'm seeing more beards on younger people. Also, thanks to the abundance (and acceptance) of quality grooming products they are much better kept than they used to be. I think young people seeing other young people with well maintained beards encourages them to try it. Public acceptance overall helps reinforce keeping and maintaining it.
Hi brother dan c beared how are u I have a few questions for u well my beard is doing a little better but I have a problem and u said if I had anything problems to let u know I still have split ends but it's like one or 2 or a few but Is the sebum oil are we supposed to produces alot and I notices that the front like were my chin is not getting long like before and I don't know why can u help me figure out what I'm doing wrong so I can reverse it.
Once you have a beard of medium size, most guys do not produce enough sebum oil to keep it nourished. For the growths it’s almost always related to internal health. Look at your water intake, exercise, diet, and stress levels
@@DanCBearded well mines is medium size like u say but question what does stress level, diet, 💧in take and exercise have to do with our beards I don't get it.
Then another thing I noticed to dan c bearded is right if I do product alot of sebum oil it's goes on my beards hairs and it makes the hairs hard like dry and if I have a new hair growing I doesn't get long enough bc it would fall out I say it would be half of my finger before it falls out. Bc my chin hairs would get long first and every else would follow but it been like these since I lasted spoke to u I keep cutting the split ends and and they keep playing peak a boo.
So dan c bearded I'm on the pharse were my beard is growing Away from the skin like it's getting wider it feels tight on the whole beard but I can't put beard oil bc it takes it fast so no matter what I do I have to let it pass the pharse then put beard oil bc if it cut it would still do it so I have to let it get passed that pharse unfortunately.
