I spent a lot of summer weekends in Morecambe. It was great, before Lancaster closed it down.

My heart breaks for what Morecambe was. We had a caravan in Heysham and went up every weekend between 1976 and 1981. They were the best days of my life Morecambe was bouncing and great great fun to be around. Sadly in later decades it has fallen from grace, but I love it still and hope to retire there. Great and informative video 😉

Thanks for the nostalgia , most of it after my memories though. My holidays were spent at Morecambe from 1954 through to 1966. I remember the swimming pool with the high diving board with the "comedy" divers and such, the water was always b....... cold ! In the mid fifties there was the old " Moby Dick" sailing ship moored at the side of the jetty, can't think of its real name, it was used for the filming of " Treasure Island " I think. It got destroyed in a fire. We watched the first pillings being put in for " Marine land " and went to one of the shows the year later. Somewhere on RU-vid there is video of the " Guinness Clock" that always brought in crowds, Happy Mount Park, and the Illuminations. Morecambe went down hill when Lancaster took over ! Oh happy days long gone, gone but not forgotten in my 70 year old brain. Thanks again Thomas.

The 'Ryelands'. Built at nearby Glasson Dock, launched 1886. Happy Mount Park during the 'lights' was an absolute wonderland for a wide-eyed kid!

I learned to swim in the Super Swimming Stadium in 1971 - unheated, open air, it was quite bracing at about 9 in the morning. I'm sure it rained a few times, but we were a tough lot in those days. They held swimming galas and shows there, too, during the summer season. I never went to the Harbour Band Arena, but I remember an organist called Harold Graham used to give concerts there, and the music would be heard out on the prom. I did go to Marineland a few times for the dolphin shows, but Morecambe used to be so cold the poor things kept dying in the winter. There used to be a "zoo" in the Stone Jetty building. It was a horrible little place, very cramped and smelly. They actually kept a *bear* in there, which finslly went mad with the confinement and had to be put down. I think the place closed soon after that. And - last but not least - the 'Moby Dick' was moored nearby. This was a sailing ship which had been used in a few films (Disney's 'Treasure Island' with Robert Newton, and John Huston's 'Moby Dick' with Gregory Peck). It sank regularly during the winter, but it was always pumped out and refloated, until it was destroyed by a fire in 1970, on the same day the Alhambra Theatre burned down.

Great video TE!! Such a shame the Super Swimming Stadium was lost, it was super in every respect, and perfectly complemented streamline Midland Hotel. One wonders if the glass mussels will bring in the pennies and the people? We can only hope so 🙂 Well done TE!

I think will give locals work what's been lost over the years what's bonus and hopefully it should attract people and rest town will get done up but long as dose not go too much money and lose its character. But be interesting to see what happens.

Great video brought back a lot of happy memories. The super swimming stadium was fantastic I used to have a season ticket in the late 60's and would go in nearly every day during the summer. It was a long way down jumping off that top diving board! Yes Marineland had an aquarium inside and also 2 crocodiles in a pen in the centre of the aquarium. Don't know if you know but it was called the Harbour Band Arena because that is where the harbour used to be.
@ThomasEdward
@ThomasEdward 2 года назад
oooh crocodiles 🐊 in Morecambe who would of thought it were they biggies or small? No I didn't know was called Harbour Band Arena very interesting thank you makes sense because it's right in middle of pier now and old wood Pier where hovercraft is now.
@ianmitchell2837
@ianmitchell2837 2 года назад
@@ThomasEdward One big crocodile and one smaller one. When I was doing some work in there over their enclosure I was told that it was the smaller of the two that I had to watch out for as it was a lot more feisty. Ward's ship breakers yard was on the site of Marineland many years ago. That area of Morecambe for council elections etc. is still called 'Harbour Ward' due to that being where the harbour was before Heysham harbour was built.

It looks like at one time it had it all , no doubt the package holiday had a lot to do with its demise . I had an overnight stay two years on the run in 99 and 2000 for the annual Morecambe to Scarborough cycle ride and like a lot of uk seaside towns it seemed very rundown at that time , hopefully this new investment will put it back on the map 👍

Hi Thomas, went to marine land when I was young, it did have chimps in there but I never saw them, I remember it had fish tanks just after you paid to go in and then you came outside to where the dolphins were, in todays world I guess it was wrong, but I was only about 5,6 or seven years old I really enjoyed it, was like a weekend away but I only lived 5 minutes by bus.

‘E by eck, just think what Morecambe would look like if it were pulling punters in from all over, it could be the making of Morecambe... unless things were done on the cheap and half arsed - then it could end up costing us all hundreds of thousands of pounds like the Blobbyland scandal. A local.
