He makes it sound like venom... my best guess is if the writers had been given the go-ahead to make Reid explicitly bisexual (it's been 15 years AND I'M STILL ANGRY) and Derek is in love with him, it stirs some really unpleasant feelings since he was sexually abused by another man and now he's in love with one. Idk that's just my theory.
