I'm not a Karate guy, I'm a Ba Gua (chinese internal art) guy...but that man is absolutely impressive. I haven't see such complete understanding of the mechanics of moves, or the sheer quickness from a martial artist in a long time. What an amazing man.
I was very lucky to have trained with Higaonna Sensei back in 1979...I now consider myself to be Honoured to be in the presence of this great master and very Humble human being...
Higaonna Sensei character is beyond amazing. this man has traveled to many countries to teach and would charge a paltry sum that barely covered the plane ticket cost. The classes were supposed to last 5 hrs/day, but instead would easily extend for more than 9hrs/day. IOGKF does not have any overpriced merchandise. It does not charge an absurdity to its members for Gassukus. Many members are able to attend these events for free if they are unemployed or struggling. A true karate master.
People seem to wonder how this 70 year old man is the greatest in the world. It's because he never stopped and he also examined every little detail and practices every day. To the gentleman that keeps saying oh it won't work, I have some sad news for you. There will come a day where you can't do your MMA or Muay Thai the way you could when you were 20. Morio Higaonna is in his 70's and with a few seemingly simple looking movements can do his art probably the same way he could in his twenties and send people more than half his age on their knees. That's probably why this guy is training with him. Not just because he's one of the greatest in the world but because this is clearly a martial art that can be effectively used well into old age with little changes.
hes actually a little slower than he was in his 20s, but his actual power IE tension has hardly fallen at all. his technique on the otherhand well..... yeah his decades of experience show he might be a lil slow but hes still lethal.
"... with only one purpose in mind during combat, and that is to inflict lethal injury with the least amount of energy used on the enemy." - Ikken Hissatsu! with time, i have come to highly appreciate & respect this thought which's tried to be practiced & followed in word & deed by sincere practitioners.
MMA is a modern mixed style really efective one to one, and especially in the cage or ring sport, but without doubt the traditional styles like karate Goyu ryu can work in a self defense situation, full respect Sensei Higaonna
Having read many posts after watching this snapshot video i would like to add a comment. Having meet Higaonna Sensei many times over the years, and been lucky enough to train with other Master and living legends this Man is by far and away on the top of the food chain for Martial Artists. Regarding other peoples view I respect theres, but my experience training in different styles regardless of how apart they seem, they are all somehow interrelated and applicable. Sensei is an amazing Man......
nice to see joint manipulation in karate because for many reasons it is not easy to find someone who can teach the many aspects of karate including joint locks.many dojos just teach some punching and kicking combinations and kata memorization but no bunkai where the real self defense and efficiency of karate is.
I practice Uechi-ryu and i must say everything you say is 100% correct. I have practiced now for 2 years and am loving every second of it, especially when sensei stops his blows on my weak-spots, its scary but exciting. apparently my system is the sister system of yours. i also notice the technique differences are remarkable yet almost identical.
I am predominantly a Southern Kung Fu Practitioner (Lau Gar), but I've always had an admiration for the simple but effective Goju Ryu style, as well as the almost stone bodies that seem to practice it.
I gotta know, why you two are arguing over karate and how it is used. From what masterdude has put forth , can be seen in this video. The techniques the sensei is demonstrating are not for competition as these are capable of fracturing the skull (my own system uechi-ryu has similar to this). I practice the sister style to this system, and it is scary to watch this Sensei, his ability to use technique at will is astounding, fighting him would leave one terribly injured
I'm not a Goju Ryu stylist...but if I were ever able to go to Okinawa for the purpose of training, I would make a point to seek out Higaonna Sensei, and try to arrange some training time with him. His attitude toward training and teaching appears to be so genuine and sincere. His level of conditioning is phenomonal, and his skill level is in some other universe that most of us will never be able to discover. He seems to exemplify what a karate master should be. I'd love to train with him.
1 dislike is the guy being demonstrated on! But seriously, great demo and makes be proud to study the Goju-Ryu system. Higaonna is true bujutsu! Good to see him demonstrate a few bunkai which I derived (independently) from the kata myself... However, we could do without the drums so we could actually hear what sensei is saying!
@GojuBob Have you actually worked with Higaonna shinshi and felt him doing his gyakute (locking) to you own body? Or are you merely pontificating from your armchair without any direct knowledge? Just curious whether you are basing the opinion you expressed on anything like actual firsthand experience.
May I just add that "traditional" martial arts were meant for that exact thing. The modernization of these arts now focus on points and competition because there is much less need to get into such a fight in these times.
@singhakabuttar You can only be graded to 10th dan by a panel of your peers, I'm fairly sure it was members of Japan Karate Association who are all Forerunners in their respective lineages.
yea, and thats nothing compared to the way old tkd is changed into modern day stunting and dance routines. nothing disappoints me more than that. cough cough K-tigers
@GojuMagalhaes1 Wrong, Miyazato Sensei was the head sensei at the Jundokan Dojo where Anichi Sensei also taught. Although Higaonna Sensei trained at the dojo, he stated many times that Anichi Sensei was the one who gave him most, if not all, of his instruction. There are multiple interviews where Higaonna affirms that Miyazato Sensei would offer him advice and teach but not even close to the amount of Anichi. Higaonna sensei has stated many times he only recognizes 1 teacher and that is Anichi
interesting, you wrote this in the Kuro Obi video "my rank, from the Japanese perspective I would be a 3rd Dan" but now I see you write here that you are a shodan that has been practising Goju for five years
buenos comentarios masterdude el karate es para matar no se puede dejar nada al azar quienes practicamos goju siempre intentamos practicarlo lo mas eficaz posible evtando que sea una competicion
I respect traditional martial arts however I always preferred styles that focused on full speed no rules situation because I personally want to learn a style I can use in. a street fight were my skills aren't a matter of points but help get me home safely.
I would gladly meet Higonna Sensei and spar with him full contact. I would like to do that with you too. We can also go through Goju kata, what's your favourite? How is your Shisochin, Seisan, Kurunfa, Suparimpei?
смотреть у учиться всем, блджард! я не очень люблю годзе, уж слишком оно жесткое...и джля ближней дистанции. Но какой же великий мастер Хигаонна! Спасибо за видео, Богдан Сенсей!
Excuse me, but i am a 8th Kyu going for 7th in 4 months time, i have learnt Gek-Sai dai Itch, Gek-Sai dai ni and Saifa...What is my next kata if you don't mind me asking...
This is all very well as a demonstration of some basics, but is it REALLY all that amazing? If this clip were of some anonymous instructor, you know what people would say? "Yeah? So what? He couldn't put those locks on if that big guy were resisting!" - and they'd be right, you know. I like and admire Higaonna San but too many people allow themselves to be led by hero worship into imagining that they're seeing something more than they are.
Мощность ударов в годзю-рю - тут не поспоришь. Но есть некоторый дефект, зажатость, "телеграфирование" удара. Можно почитать Брюса Ли, там подробно описано.
The thing about straight punches is that they don't telegraph as much as haymakers. A good fighter should know how to block those. From what I've seen, people wildly swinging about is what you get in a lot of fights. All you karate naysayers expect to be running into MMA sorts in the street which is a little contrived honestly. And learning self defense and martial arts are two different things. Karate is mostly about discipline and respect which includes not going out and using it on othe
as I wrote many times in the Kuro Obi thread, my channel has video of Akihiro Yagi performing a kata, I took the video directly ten years ago, I met and trained with him and his father...you are the troll hiding behind an alias and a keyboard...what is your name? let us meet
Gekisai was a beginner training kata Miyagi designed for school children. The waza involved are jodan uke, chudan uke, gedan barai, gyaku zuki, empi, uraken, shuto, and mae geri...then double fisted punch and mawashi uke, all very basic waza
I did not claim techniques would not work. My argument has always been that in order to really fight and apply techniques practically, you must train and fight others at full contact, against others of multiple styles, which all MMA is. You on the other hand keep claiming that you can kill UFC champions and beat any professional fighter with your techniques. I have proof right here online that I have at least met the Yagi family, and I have video in storage of when I trained with them.
Hmm, no one outside of Japan punches like that. Why don't these guys teach how to defend against boxing type punches, which is what most ppl who punch seem to use? (whether they actually practice boxing or not)
Andhaira They do train to block boxing type Punching. When you practice the art you learn how to block, Perry, counterattack and attack in the form's. And in like boxing you have more weapon's on your body and in your mind and spirit that you train with.
Oh, I know: I have a good deal of respect for Higaonna San. My point was twofold: 1. That this clip isn't all that astonishing, and wouldn't be regarded as such if Higaonna San weren't featured in it; and, 2. that there is too much uncritical hero-worship of Japanese/Okinawan teachers. These people are, when all is said and done, fallible and human like the rest of us. I certainly didn't mean to disparage Higaonna San as such. Apologies if I seemed to.
you've written many times that you would like to fight in a no rules fight, and that you still go school to school practising your waza against others...I am not talking about politics, I am talking about a face to face meeting at minimum.
If you truly understood classical not traditional martial arts you would know that this is kindergarten level karate and choreographed arrangements with a cooperative partner. I do not make This comment with disrespectful intent. Very few people on RU-vid will understand my comments but so be it
>Trained a martial art few months >Thinks he understands everything it has to offer You do realize those few months all you learned was the same thing you would learn in 4 years of boxing. Basics, the fundamentals. Striking, Blocking, footwork. Got bored of bullshit lol.
