ADEYTO talks to the most dangerous man in Japan, MORIO HIGAONNA 東恩納 盛男, 3rd generation Founder of Okinawan Goju-ryu Karate.
Morio Higaonna born December 25, 1938 is a prominent Okinawan karate practitioner who is the founder and Chief Instructor of the International Okinawan Goju-ryu Karate-do Federation (IOGKF). He is a holder of the highest rank in Goju-ryu karate, 10th dan.
Higaonna has written several books on Goju-ryu karate, including Traditional Karate-do: Okinawa Goju Ryu (1985) and The history of Karate: Okinawan Goju Ryu (2001). Martial arts scholar Donn Draeger (1922--1982) reportedly once described him as "the most dangerous man in Japan in a real fight.

This wonderful man and Kanazawa Hirokazu sensei, both of whom I have trained with in the UK are, for my money, the best karate exponents in their own way, of any - and over my 50+ years of training in around 10-12 different styles, I have worked with the best. Fantastic series of videos - thank you for posting.

It always interests me how masters of any subject or skill tout the importance of grasping the basics of their chosen field or skill. Sounds simple, but this is a man who has devoted most of his life to mastering himself.

@ThePsychoguy
@ThePsychoguy 6 лет назад
There is already a sort-of unification of the karate branches in Shito Ryu. All karate is from either Naha or Shuri (Goju is the most prominent descendent of the Naha school, Shotokan is the most prominent descendent of the Shuri school; all karate is descended from one and/or the other in some way, shape, or form - that's why there are so many similarities across styles). Shito Ryu is the unification of the original Shuri and Naha forms, and includes all major kata from both schools.

A shitload of boxers will punch harder than he does.
@true.royalty6742
@true.royalty6742 5 лет назад
@@petercarlson811 Not really because in goju kyu we practice punching with proper body technique just like any "good " boxer would. Also, most boxers don't have the proper leg or body conditioning. Proper technique which we have in karate so does boxing, will allow for maximum punch strength. Furthermore, Mass doesn't always equal punch power...many body builders will big ass arm still can't punch on the same level as boxers or karate practitioners can. And to support this lets use physic. Momentum = velocity × mass. If you have mass but not proper technique or speed you need more mass. If you don't have mass you have to increase speed which karate focuses on.
@petercarlson811
@petercarlson811 5 лет назад
@@true.royalty6742 The guy showing the punching techniques left his lower body totally behind and thus omitted a buttload of power. To generate maximum power the hip and shoulder needs to move as one. This guy is only punching with his arms and shoulders. "Also, most boxers don't have the proper leg or body conditioning." If all you do is punching (boxing in other words) your body will adapt to generate the power you so desire in accordance with the technique you use.

Question about Sanchin because my Matsubayashi Shorin-ryu sensei said it's dangerous but the more he talks about it the more I want study it. The reason is that I seek strength and I'm interested in Goju-ryu because Kyokushin-kai is a little too rough for me.

Okinawan Meibukan and Shoreikan Goju-Ryu are more classical than most styles and also have more of a Chinese White Crane influence. Which, IMHO, are styles that you can do longer into your life as you age. I combine Kempo and Meibukan. One for self defense and the other for the classical art.
@joelquebec

Some teachers discourage doing Sanchin with high intensity when the karateka has reached 45+ years or so because they stress different aspects of the kata. Like I recommended to another person, try reading Okinawan Karate: A History of Styles and Masters, Volume 1 by Christopher Clarke.
