My step son was sexually assaulted by our relief society’s son at school. (We lived in Utah). School never called us. Our son came home very upset. As we’re talking to him, the RS pres knocks on our door. She tells us she was sent to us by the bishop to smooth jt over an “work something out with out law enforcement involved” (I come from a law enforcement background) I said nope, an called the police. The kid was aressted an booked into Juvenile detention. That Sunday I was pulled in to the bishops office, and scolded and told I was to let the bishop handle it. I said no, a crime was committed. The bishop tells me I’m not to make any of these kind of decisions without consulting him first. I laughed and walked out.

Thank you, RFM. Years ago, I was a member at a wonderful ward. A church member was caught abusing his own and other children. The church gave him a slap on the wrist and allowed him to keep working with youth, perpetuating the abuse. He was prosecuted and jailed several years later, but the damage had been done.

This has been going on for decades. I was molested by a great uncle who was a church member in good standing. I was discouraged from contacting the police as it would be taken care of by the church and my family. It stopped my great uncle from further molesting me, but not others.

@@shessassyYes I do, especially the reverence given to Catholic priests. It just seems to me the Bishops are a bit different. One day it's a man from your neighborhood you go to church with and the next you are asking for advice on really serious topics and confessing to him. No training no, no experience, just he was called one say.
@m2dad2

This subject is all too familiar as I myself suffered not only sexual abuse by a family member. He was caught in the act and sent by my mother to confess to the bishop. The Bishop, an educator, was clearly not qualified to deal with sexual predators, and was unwilling to notify authorities as well as discipline him in any way. It made me sick to my stomach to see the predator continued to take the sacrament. The bishop never once asked me what I went through. I knew then the “power of discernment” is bogus as is the promptings of the Holy Ghost. If there was ever a time that a bishop, and for that matter a parent, would be prompted by the spirit to recognize the evil perpetrated on me, this would be it. It was the perpetrator that was protected by the church while I was left to go it alone as the abuse continued.

I wonder if these abusers sent on missions continue to perpetrate these crimes upon the folks of their mission. Hard to believe it stops while they are missionaries.
@TEAM__POSEID0N
@TEAM__POSEID0N 7 месяцев назад
My guess is if they had those inclinations to begin with--and got away with that behavior before the mission--they would most likely continue to have such inclinations as missionaries. The one thing that maybe would slow them down would be the fact that they would generally be stuck with another missionary as a constant companion. The LDS missionary program is such a mess. By making missionary service a nearly mandatory social rite of passage for all young men in the church, they pretty much guarantee that there will be a significant percentage of young people who do the missionary thing just because they feel like they have to in order to maintain a reputation and get "social credit" within the Mormon social/cultural community. And some of those will be people who are immoral, immature and, in some cases, people who have actually committed various types of crimes without having been caught or punished. Of course, since the whole point of LDS missionary work is ultimately ridiculous due to the "gospel" being a fake product that they're trying to sell, the Church could still get much better results if they converted their missionary program into a paid career path for serious people who studied and prepared for it (language studies, theological studies, philosophy, history, etc.)and who could be carefully vetted before being employed and assigned to mission areas. The number of missionaries deployed would inevitably be much lower, but their effectiveness would undoubtedly be many orders of magnitude greater.

My dearest friend was sexually abused and raped repeatedly by her two of her Mormon uncles when she was a child. Her parents found out about it when she was finally able to tell them and they didn’t report the uncles. She was told by her bishop to forgive, and the atonement of Jesus would cover it. Now, in her late 30s, not a day of her life, goes by where she isn’t affected by the abuse she suffered. She struggles with suicidal ideation, Self-loathing, depression, extreme anxiety, challenges in her marriage, over protective tendencies with her children, feelings of worthlessness, anger towards her parents, and fear of running into her uncles. They both hold prominent positions within their wards and stakes.

I believe someone outside the church finally found out and he did prison time, but I'm not sure on the specifics. My other abuser also physically abused me so badly I have permanent structural damage to my head and neck so bad I'm permanently disabled and have had multiple surgeries and require several more. I was told I was antagonizing him. He was my torturer. They pushed so hard to send him on a mission, and I was treated like I was the problem. To this day I fear for my life from him.

FYI - The presence of adverse license action in one state does not guarantee that someone cannot move to another state and become licensed again. More state boards are getting better at checking for previous licenses and disciplinary actions, but it’s not always required by board rules to do so. There are third party companies who do previous license background checks but they are not required for licensing or hiring. All the states have public license lookup websites… a quick search showed that there are/were no medical licenses under David Farley’s name in Idaho or Utah.

I was a victim of what I would describe as lewd conduct or indecent exposure from a man who was a friend of the family. I was just a little kid and he was a respected leader in the lds church. He exposed himself to me several times when I was young. I never really knew I was a victim of anything terrible until I was 46 years old, and I told one of my brothers about the stories from when I was a little kid. I was shocked to hear from my brother that he had an experience similar to mine from the same man. Then I found out that two more of my brothers had experienced it as well. I thought I was the only one that experienced it because I was friends with one of the man’s sons and I spent a lot of time at their house. Actually my oldest brother’s story is worse than mine, even though there was no child his age to be friends with, this man would ask my parents if he could take my brother to the movies, or to restaurants, or to the swimming pool, and the abuse started happening. This man actually has a well known name in the church. When I started advocating for youth protection reform in the church I was ridiculed by my local leaders. I was released from my calling and no one would talk to me about the subject. It has put a massive strain on my marriage, because my wife still goes to church and I do not anymore. I have talked to two different stake presidents about needed changes in youth protection policies, but I have gotten nothing from them. My old bishopric shunned me and the new bishopric so far is afraid to talk to me, even though I have requested an interview, I am still waiting. They do not want to change even though current youth protection policies are disgustingly bad.

Its so gut wrenching the harm we do to each other on this earth. It is difficult to overcome so much. I feel as if I could bleed from every pore how lost we can get and how evil be can be. Nevertheless, the one who overcame the world (Christ) commanded us to forgive ourselves and to forgive others. "He proclaimed, forgive them for they know not what they do". We are all lost and are lacking in many ways. Forgiveness is for all of us. If we don't do it, we choose to become judges demanding that vengeance and harm be done to the person who is the abuser. In so doing, we become like the abusers, (abusers to the abusers), justifying our demands that the abuser be tortured equal to the abuse of the victims. I choose that the darkness not move through me to act and retaliate and to continue doing more harm. I choose love and forgiveness as I trust we all need help to change. Love is eternal life and it brings forth more life. It is good fruit and it is forever. What do you want?

Something tells me “someone” is screwing with your “likes”… I’m seeing this elsewhere as well. It only serves to prove you speak truth. Your work is important, and greatly appreciated!!!

Ugh. I need a shower after this one. The more of these cases that emerge, the more I'm convinced that the unreported abuse is a product of purity culture in the church. They don't have a handle on what healthy sexuality is, so they really can't wrap their minds around deviant sexuality. When consensual premarital sex between adults is a sin next to murder, how do you have any kind of healthy gauge for what is and isn't appropriate? I do feel bad for the young men named as abusers who seem to have been barely more than children themselves when they started abusing others. They needed help just as much as the victims did to correct their behavior, but instead were sent on missions, which as we all know is the cure all for sexual deviancy in the church, right? Blech. It makes me ill to think about it.

RFM - my brother-in-law lost his license in 4 states (a child psychiatrist) on sexual abuse charges. He moved to SLC Utah and his license was reinstated. He is currently practicing.

ETA: There is no David Farley licensed as a doctor in Utah. I'm here. None of this surprises me. I worked for DCFS in Utah.

You can practice, get doctor license in different states than the one took your license.

That was an air tight analysis of these horrific law suits. You are an incredible prosecutor, but it would be so interesting to hear a steel man of the defense’s case. I can’t help but show bias for the plaintiffs in these cases because of the frequency of their occurrence. Abuse is a real epidemic in the church, so what is their argument. We know how they win, through the loopholes they’ve created, but why doesn’t the membership leave? What does that argument look like? I’m asking you, RFM, to take off your prosecutor hat and put on the defense cap that subdues the membership.

As much as Gilbert, AZ has made headlines lately it’s easy to say why RFM said it in this episode. I believe the case he referred to is actually in a small town in southern AZ.

Really makes you wonder what the leaders knew every other year or so when they announce in sacrament meeting, youth are not to be in the halls or going to the restroom alone.

IT TIME TO TAKE BACK THE CHURCH FROM THOSE WHO WISH TO HURT IT

28:38 I've been thinking about something: It's not that the church believes that their reputation's more important than protecting sex abuse victims (I don't know a very many members that would believe that). The problem is that they act that way. And I think saying the church ACTS a certain way might be more effective, because it doesn't require members to believe something horrendous. Like, I think members are more like to say "the church did this and that's horrible" than "this is what the church believes." It's horrifying and disgusting either way, but change might be more likely to happen if church members don't feel like their character is being attacked because the church made the wrong choice. Might save more people.

Do not make the church’s attorneys your conscience by calling the 1 800 number, call law enforcement. It’s highly probable that the sexual predator that just confessed to you will do it again. By following church guidelines you have become an accomplice. They don’t care about the victim, they only care about church money. Would you call the hotline if you felt you or your family were in immediate danger? If possible restrain the criminal until the police arrive.

It's so sad that TBM won't allow themselves to see the truth and continue to cover their eyes to the fact that "priesthood " holders can be abusers.
