Excellent and informative newscast. I was especially touched by John Dehlin's powerful statement towards the end (1:40:09): "...I can't believe that in 2024 it is ok for the LDS Church to be excommunicating legally married same-sex couples that simply want to love each other AND worship in the Church!" John, I agree with you 100%!!!

I had a son serve a SA (Brazil) Mission, and I served a SA (Ecuador) Mission. The telephone call thing made sense just twice a year, because phone calls were so flippin' expensive. My calls were limited to 1 hour, and it cost me $60 an hour. I would have gone broke on MSF if I called every week, or my son called every week. Technology has definitely facilitated making phone and face calls that cost next to nothing. I'm glad the Church embraced it, but yes, I would have loved to have that option when I was out.

Regarding the “mother’s” portion of the video-notice how the church (and you see this a lot in greater society) focuses on (you can see it both in the language they use and in their actions) the value of mothers (both on Mother’s Day and outside of that) for what they do for others, and not their inherent value or qualities as individuals. There is also an infantilization of men in that they can’t “survive” without women-not to mention the benevolent sexism towards women, and the perpetuation of cisnormativity and heteronormativity.

Amen, John! (@mormonstories). I don’t understand the randomness of these excommunications, particularly if they had been openly participating in their wards without objection by the members. What is very frustrating in this game of “leadership roulette” is the inconsistency. It’s like what happened in that one ward where the bishop allowed the female leaders to sit on the stand during Sacrament Meeting. It was a very positive move that the Ward appreciated. Then some area authority who came and saw what was going on got a burr up his butt and insisted that the practice be stopped. The bishop should be allowed the authority to push back and say, “No, I’m the father of the Ward. I know my people better than you do.” But he doesn’t. I think that the only thing that would make a difference to the top 15 is if folks started voting with their feet en masse. If an entire Ward, better yet, an entire Stake, or multiple Stakes, put together a memorandum ultimatum stating that they will cease and desist PAYING TITHING and actively participating in Church until they get their heads out of their asses with women and the priesthood, excommunication of LGBTQ members, reporting molestation to the police instead of the Church attorneys, etc., it would force their hands. The only way I believe that things will change is if they are hit in the pocketbook. That is all they understand. And yes, the Church has billions, but what will they do if there is nothing left to actually run?

Jesus is making us choose whether to be neighborly or un-neighborly. If you make us be un-neighborly, it's on you because you're making Jesus sad and mad. For Jesus hath said: "If your neighbor asketh you to shorten your steeple, then I say unto you turn to that neighbor and say unto him that now because of his defiance and rejection of the steeple of the Lord, the height of the steeple shall have 10 more cubits added to the height thereof."
