Thank you and thanks for stopping by! It’s hard to remove or put in the portafilter when you first got Gaggia. It should start getting better in couple of days. You should leave the portafilter slightly in the slot when you are done using it but don’t lock it all the way, just enough for it not to fall off. Also, I recommend getting an espresso brush and brush the shower screen and around it every time you are done using the machine. To help prevent coffee buildup.

@@QTHomeCafe Is 20 sec too short of a wait? For my Gaggia Pro, the steaming light will turn on around 40 seconds after flipping the switch, so I usually wait 35 seconds. It feels like 20 sec will lead to low temp and low vortex to start with? But your steamed milk does look gooood

Hey Nice routine, A couple of questions here: - 35 seconds, isn't it too much for an extraction ? wouldn't it get over-extracted ? - Have you tried Purging->Pushing team button for 10 seconds -> turning off steam then right away start brewing ? i've noticed more consistent temps this way. - Your setup is soo nice, you really need a wooden handle bottomless portafilter with 21g basket :D. I got one recently for my gaggia pro and i am amazed on the results. - Milk wise, i see you start frothing before the light comes up which is prime approach to have strong pressure, but here is what i do to get that extra initial pressure you loose while purging: Purge the wand of condensation before you start frothing, it could help you. I'm just an enthusiast like everybody else, so pardon my remarks. Loved the video

@QTHomeCafe 3 года назад
Hey there! Thank you for checking out the vid and all your feedback😄 I got asked on the 35s extraction before as well and this was just because of the local beans I got. The roaster actually advised on 30-35s extraction for the beans. Typically I aim for 25-30s on other beans. I did try temp surfing with the steam button a few times before I installed a PID. Definitely helps a lot for those without a PID on GCP! And hey, you and me both on the bottomless! I’d love to get one soon. What wood color did you go with?

Pretty late to this video, hopefully you can still answer this. Do you cool the machine down after steaming your milk? I’ve read about it and what I am doing is turn off the steam button, start the pump and open up the steam valve until I get water out of the wand. Do you also do that, or something similar? I don’t know if this is necessary to be honest.
@QTHomeCafe
@QTHomeCafe 3 года назад
Hi! Thank you for stopping by. It's never too late to ask any questions here. I've always "cool down" the machine every time I'm done using it and by waiting til water comes out of steam wand is to refill your boiler with water. Once you brew again the next morning, your boiler will have water and ready for you to brew. It's never hurt to cool down and be on the safe side.

Can I ask? I have Gaggia but I struggle with timings... I use same ratio (18 in 36-40 out) but I was told it should flow in 25-30 seconds... Doing so my espresso tastes quite sour often. You have increased time quite drastically, does it help with the taste?
@Psychoh90
@Psychoh90 3 года назад
Hi, it depends of course on the type of beans used. You can use same ratio same time but taste can be miles different from what he achieved. It is very strange seeing a 35 to 40 sec extraction. I am going to wait for the answer to this because I do not know the type of beans he used. If your espresso tastes sour you could try few things: light roasted beans in most cases are kind of sour and acidic and more difficult to extract flavour from cause they are denser than the medium and dark roasted. So what you can do is increasing temperature (I have the Classic Pro. What I do is this. Before pulling a shot with light roasted I push the steaming button and wait 7 to 10 secs. This helps temperature stability during the shot but most importantly in this case, the 90 degrees C water that normally flow through the grouped it increases around 92 94 and stays around 90 92 for all the duration of the shot). If you already do this, you can try and grind a little bit finer than u usually do or put 0.5 gr of coffee more inside the basket. Anyway, 35 to 40 secs shot time it is not common with most of beans and roasts.
@QTHomeCafe
@QTHomeCafe 3 года назад
Hi both, I definitely agree with @leoniada Monaco's comment. It really depends on the beans you are using when you are trying to make an espresso. In my case I was using a local espresso blend, they recommended for this specific blend for a brew time of 35-40 secs and 18g in/40-45g out. I find that 18g in/35-40g out in 35-40secs yields the best result for my taste. I'm still new to the espresso's world, but typically I would turn on the machine for at least 20 mins and aim for 18g in/35-40g out (1:2 ratio) in 25-30 secs also. From what you said, I'm guessing it could be either the shot was not hot enough or under extracted. Freshness of the beans or the type of beans you are using could also effect the sourness of the shot. To be clear, there's a difference between an overwhelmingly sour shot and a hint of acidity. I haven't completely dive into the temperature surfing yet but I'm planning to get a PID in the near future to have a better control of the temperature. Make sure that your cup and your portafilter stays warm throughout the whole process, it would help with the temperature stability. I'd say try to see if it's a problem of under extraction, so you grind a little bit finer or add a little bit more coffee grounds to see if it helps. Please let me know how it goes! I'm curious to know more and love this type of convo.
@lukastesting
@lukastesting 3 года назад
@@QTHomeCafe so I did few experiments and found out, keeping the dose roughly at 18g is ok, and preheating the machine for 15 mins and bumping extraction a few secs 28-33 more helped get rid of sharp acidity.

Which basket in the portafilter are you using? The double shot basket that was in place; or the single shot? With the double shot basket in the portafilter, starting with 18 grams of beans, pulling the shot for 35 seconds; I get 198 grams of coffee liquid. That's too much? Thank you for stopping by! Typically speaking, 1 gram of ground coffee to 2 grams of espresso. For example, if you grind 18grams of ground coffee, you should aim around 36grams of espresso at around 25-30seconds. You will want to adjust according to your taste. The double basket that came with the machine should be an 18gram basket for 18grams of ground coffee. Right now, we are currently using a 18-22grams IMS basket and it should be listed in the newer video. I believe that the middle light goes out after 14-15seconds. My husbanding I recently bought a Gaggia Classic Pro and a Sette 270. We are complete newbies when it comes to making espresso. Our grinder is currently set at 7A. We weigh our beans at 18g in and were able to pull 34 grams out in about 25-30 seconds, however the espresso doesn’t taste good, its very strong and bitter. We then try and alter the time/grind and then it tends to come out faster and still tastes bad. We will try the grind setting that’s mentioned in the comments, but we are beside ourselves. Any advice/info would be amazing! Thanks!!

Hi there! It’s a great combo to have, but definitely not easy in general to dial in espresso🙂I’m curious about the beans you’re using/beans profile, is it medium roast? Does the shot taste burnt at all or just very bitter? There are many variables so we can’t say for sure what it is yet. You can try lower it to 17g in, or pull 36-37g, so changing the ratio pretty much from 1:2 to 1:3 maybe...and see if the taste changes. Usually if my machine is not warmed up before I pull a shot, it results in a bad shot but would taste sour instead.

@@QTHomeCafe Hi! It’s a medium/dark roast. We try letting the machine warm up for about 15 min. It just tastes extremely strong, like unbearable to drink, even to taste. I tried espresso at a local shop and it tasted smooth and fruity, this was nowhere near that. It’s just frustrating. We haven’t even made an espresso drink yet, as we’re spending our time trying to master just the espresso.

Do you know if that local shop also uses medium/dark roast? From the sound of it, I’d suggest you guys to try medium and not towards dark roast. Light roast is a bit harder to dial in, so maybe not a good idea at this point. Try getting a local bag where you know it’s fresh beans, medium roast, and the beans profile indicates some sort of fruity flavor. It sounds to me that you’re doing everything right in terms of working the machine, so I think it’s the beans profile and preference. I actually prefer a bitter and strong shot for my drinks because I like how it tastes when mixed with milk. When I do a shot to drink on its own, I’d have to go with something like Ethiopia beans since it’s lighter and fruity note.

@@QTHomeCafe So the beans we were using were just from a local health market. However, yesterday I went to a roaster who does their own beans. I ended up getting a medium roast with fruity notes. He also was saying the same thing, about the beans and always wanting fresh beans and sticking with a medium roast. We ended up making two shots that weren’t bad, even sippable. We are between 7E and 7D, so just trying to figure that out, maybe trying in between? Any thoughts on that? Both setting shots tasted strong but did have a smoother fruity note to them. Our goal is to try it with milk today, but not sure how any of this will come out. Lol.

Awesome, that’s progress for sure! Fresh beans makes a big difference, as well as using filtered water. How is the time/ratio for the two shots you tried? You can try to pull 40g out and see if the shot gets better. Temperature surfing is also something you guys should look into as it does affect the flavor of the shot😊

Hi there, I definitely would recommend this machine if you're looking for something that can produce good quality espresso and doesn't cost thousands of dollars. It does take a bit of time getting used to; I was not a fan of certain parts in terms of the design and the workflow was an adjustment for me. Prior to this one, I had an old one from DeLonghi and also the Breville Barista Express. I'd say Barista Express is also a very good entry level machine, comes close to the Gaggia Classic Pro, but the built in grinder is not so great so I get better result with Gaggia Classic Pro and the Baratza grinder. Let me know if you have any other questions :) Hope that helps!

It was 18g in, 36-40g out in 35-40 seconds. It’s a bit longer than usual for the shot duration due to this specific local beans we used. I can’t recall the grinder setting then, sorry!

@@QTHomeCafe Thanks for reply. Frankly, I don't get how you managed to fit 18g before stamping into standard 18g basket and out-of-the-box portafilter. For me, max 15g of coffee works with 7-8 on grinder. I saw some other people say about 18g but with 21g basket.
@QTHomeCafe
@QTHomeCafe 3 года назад
Do you use dark roast by chance? For me, that’s the only time that I can’t have 18g but have to lower to around 16g. It’s definitely just the standard out-of-the-box portafilter basket. I measure both before and after grinding. Now I’m curious if others do 18g as well on the same basket.

@@oleksiig.6040 I've never use that bean before so I won't be able to tell you. I typically recommend using fresh light-medium roasted beans. Anything from medium-dark roast beans will usually go for 16-17g in the basket.

Why did you use two pitchers?
@QTHomeCafe
@QTHomeCafe 3 года назад
Hi there, I'm a beginner in latte art so this is more of a personal preference. I came across an advice of using a bigger pitcher so that I could get closer to the surface when pouring. I also like the spout on the bigger pitcher, more sharp. However, I use the smaller pitcher still because it's easier to steam as I don't use a lot of milk in my drink, that way the wand can submerge properly. Hope that helps!

@@QTHomeCafe does the decanting do something to the milk that makes it easier to make latte art? If so, what? Or is it just that you prefer the second jug?
@QTHomeCafe
@QTHomeCafe 2 года назад
I personally find that it helps with the milk texture when transfer to another pitcher, as milk sometimes gets separated into layers after steaming. For latte art, pouring from a bigger pitcher gives me the ability to get really close to the surface which is one of the important factor. In a smaller pitcher, you might not be able to get close to the surface without accidentally starting the pour early/ milk pour out. Hope that helps!
