This was a great video. I just adopted my male guinea pig "peanut" from a family friend who wasn't properly taking care of him. Unfortunately the ppl around me think it's a joke when it comes to the proper needs of a pet guinea pig, but it hasn't stopped me to do my research and prepare myself on how to properly take care of my guinea pig. If it weren't for your channel I'd be totally lost. So thank you for all your great advice :)

I never knew about the Romane lettuce thing! I feed my 3 pigs romaine and they seem fine with it... I guess it depends on the pig! Haha very helpful video! :)

I had someone tell me on another video all about how tomatoes, peppers and cucumber are fruits. Which is all fine and dandy, but who actually ever refers to them as such? No one, so to me it was just irritating because they clearly weren't taking away the proper info, all I wanted to get across was a healthy diet, not get technical about what a product is or isn't lol.

I always love how informative you are with guinea pig care, especially the attention to calcium in their diet! Phinni and Sammi thank you as you are the reason I made some dietary changes for the better! No gritty pee here! What a change moving to a small town - I always picked the green pepper because it was the least expensive but they rarely get them in at our grocery store now! :)

Thank you so much for all these tips! I've had my piggy for 6 months and just now got him a buddy and they are doing great but I was curious on learning more about my piggies so they can live a long happy life. Thanks to your channel I have purchased a new c & c cage that will have a lot more space for them to run and play in and I'm making changes to their diet for the better! wow!! The romaine lettuce tip is actually super helpful!! Ive noticed one of my pigs have weird pee, now I know its prob the lettuce. ill switch them up as soon as the rest is eaten n hope it sorts things out :) thank you!

What do you mean by weird pee? What else do you feed them and how much. Like brand of pellets and how much, hay and so on.

They usually have 1-2 lettuce leaves, cucumber or celery, 1/8 of a pepper and it varies from there. Also unlimited Timothy hay and 1/4 cup of pellets. I don't have the brand name but it has no coloured bits. Also sometimes my female piggy has like whiteish crusty pee but sometimes she doesn't. I thought that's wat u ment with pee XD maybe not lol. I did research n I think they said it was because to much (gah I forget the name) but I thought my diet was good so maybe it was the lettuce maybe no?

SheikyPets 1/4 cup of pellets for 2 pigs? It is important to know how much calcium is in the pellets...where do you buy them...sure you don't know the brand? I would be much more worried about what is in their pellets than Romaine lettuce at this point. Gritty pee is a sign of way too much calcium.

SheikyPets What is the calcium in the pellets? Doesn't say online and doesn't list whether it is alfalfa or timothy based. Can you let me know. Isn't a good sign I can't read what the ingredients are online.

I have been doing romaine every p.m with green ,peppers ,orange kale n carrots. We have three piggies we do small portions to make up the meal.I didn't realise Kale was a once a week thing. I heard once a week, so okay not often. I'll switch to green lettuce. I can't chance my babies being in pain unhealthy or things causing issues of any kind. Thank you so so much.

My piggies seem to be getting used to green peppers. Their previous owner fed them a lot of pellets, parsley, and baby carrots so they are a little picky now that I'm trying to widen their variety and give them healthier options. They sniff the baby tomato's (i cut them in half so they're smaller bites for my senior) but neither of them care for them.

hello! i love your channel. i was wondering if you could make a piggy tummy approved food video. i have seen different blogs etc. giving their piggys some not so tummy approved fresh food and pellet foods please it would be a great help. i am a potential future piggy mama. i had them when i was younger. there is so much more information out there about pig care. your babies seem very very happy. thanks again for making the videos that you have made.

Oh and my pigs won't go near tomatoes or peppers. I've tried four types( green,red,yellow and orange). All three and I can't even get a nibble. So I try to make sure vitamin c is a daily and Calcium but apparently low amounts.

Great video! Very informative :) I have a few questions... How often would you recommend feeding corn husks? Are there any other herbs that are safe and suitable for pigs? i.e basil, thyme, mint... x

AnimalMadCait Generally speaking, all herbs are super high in calcium. I think Cilantro is probably on the lower end but I know Basil, Dill, Parsley and so on are very high. A great trusted chart is this one... www.guinealynx.info/chart.html Corn husks can be fed daily if you wish, best to start with small amounts however if this is a new food, to make sure they tolerate it well.

skinnypigs1 Thanks for the link! I shall defo check that out. It's interesting that you say all herbs are high in calcium... I always knew that parsley is... but in the rabbit world (good vets advocate this) herbs and forage are now considered far more suitable as fresh food rather than vegetables for bunnies. Veggies tend to be bloating, gassy, sugary, or have no nutritional value and are too watery. Interesting how it's so different for guineas x

I did the research and Yellow showed to be higher than Red for Vitamin C. Red 285%, Yellow 305%, Green 134% (based on a 2000 a day calorie diet).

Celery is kind of like cucumber in the sense there really isn't too much nutrition, b ut if they like it, that is fine to feed. Just be careful that you cut it into small chunks so the strings don't choke them.

Everyday yes. I don't really have too many options for variety if I am sticking to the low calcium diet. They get all they need from this though and I don't mess with the diet since it is working for Barnaby :)

Peppers do have a bit of a different flavour to pigs depending on colour. Some are a bit sweeter, so certainly try different colours and always cut them up super tiny if pigs are being picky at first. Then they can just sample them a bit and should work their way up to eating them in regular sized pieces.

+mary fitzpatrick Spring mixes sometimes have high calcium leafy greens in them. A good herb would be cilantro but most other herbs are very high in calcium.

+Emory Heider No they don't need alfalfa hay at all really. You need alfalfa pellets until they are 6 months old but they can always have timothy hay.

Hi Abby :) I know you mention giving them certain portions of the veggies. For the piggies that share a cage do you just put it all in a feeding bowl for both of them to eat out of? Or do you separate their portions & as well as separating them when they eat? The reason I ask is because I have 2 females and one of them LOVES veggie time and will start eating almost immediately. The other one does not seem as interested. She will eventually take bites here and there but nothing compared to the one who loves them lol... I'm just worried one will eat both of their portions! What do you suggest? Thanks in advanced. :)

yahaira8a I have the same problem! I also have two femail pigs and one L-O-V-E-S veggi time. The other one wants the veggis, but steps aside and lets kitcat (the piggy that loves veggis) eat before she eats. I want to make sure they are both getting the nutrition they need. What do i do?

Beans are okay to feed, I wouldn't everyday. They can cause gas, so should be fed carefully. They have some Vitamin C in them.

I just got a buddy for my guinea pig I have researched a lot but when I first got my first guinea pig it was a adult and I got it from a rescue can you give me some tips and some things that I need to watch out for while introducing them also The guinea pig that I have is four months old so I know to give them alfalfa pellets in alfalfa hay but it seems very scared compared to my other guinea pig it hasn't really came out of a hide house except in this morning when no one had been down stairs yet he has ate some hay and some vegetables but he won't drink his water should I be worried?

No alfalfa hay, that isn't needed. They need long strand hay like timothy or orchard grass regardless of age. Guinea pigs are prey animals, they are nervous by nature. Are you introducing males or females? He will drink his water when ready, is it at a good height? A new environment is very scary, he needs time to adjust.

John Blobe He will be fine. Timothy hay or orchard grass hay is what all piggies need 24-7. Make sure to read up on how to do proper introductions and to have a large enough c&c cage.

Would you recommend a vitamin c supplement? My vet did but I am trying to let vegetables be my guinea pig main source of vitamin c. Unfortunately, I've tried bell peppers both green and yellow but my guinea pig just won't eat them. Should I keep trying or just go ahead and try a supplement?

I have a question! So I have decided to do a pellet-less diet for my guinea pig because even the KMS Hayloft pellets make him pee white. I did some research and found out I'm going to have to supplement vitamin C and D If I do a pellet-less diet. I bought a multi-vitamin from oxbow that has vitamins A C D E & B complex. would that be a good idea? I'm planning on giving him a multi-vitamin everyday, baby tomato with a little cucumber in the morning then later at night green leaf lettuce and some bell peppers. Also if I do give him a multivitamin everyday, can I also give him a urinary support tablet and vitamin c tablet as well? Thank you!

Yes, the multivitamin would be a good idea. You still are going to see white come out in the pee, it is the natural way to get rid of any extra calcium.

zack bullett 1 cup of veggies per pig a day is all that is really recommend, no more or you could run the risk of mushy poops or bloat.

AnaNerdy TV i'm not abby but yes that's fine, i think it's even better to spilt the cup in half throughout the day but feeding the full cup just once is also okay

Great video but my vet said to only give guinea pigs veggies weekly because he said they don't produce their own vitiam c and if you feed them everyday it can give them a tummy ache so he said give the oxbow vitiam c tablets everyday and I do that and he said to much veggies can hurt them so he said feed one time a week what do you think

Rainbowhamster39 I am thinking your vet may not be specialized in small pets. Veggies daily is an excellent way to allow them to get all the daily nutrients they need. Veggies do need to be limited to 1 cup of veggies per pig, per day but should be fed daily. Yes they don't make their own Vitamin C, that is why veggies rich in Vitamin C should be fed daily, then you wouldn't need to supplement it to them through a tablet. What I showed in the video is what they get everyday.

Rainbowhamster39 Everyone I know feeds veggies daily and there isn't an issue. I would personally would feed them daily, the appropriate kinds and amounts. So healthy for them.

Melissa Mohun Spinach I would never feed, high in calcium and oxalates. Kale you can feed but only like once a week or so.

Alfalfa sprouts are very high in calcium. Wouldn't recommend it unless your guinea pig in under 6 months. But still, if there young, they can still get bladder stones. So calcium content is definitely something you should take into consideration.

skinnypigs1 yes she is new and she lives alone we have been going to pet i everyday since I got her and they never have any guinea pig but they said they are getting more on Wednesday so I will be getting a second you soon!

She will not be used to them, so it will take time of offer her little bits each day before she will try them. If she has a friend, she is 100 times more likely to feel safe and secure to eat them as well. Make sure you get the same sex piggy, pet stores are very bad for mixing them up.

If not Romaine is that green leaf lettuce?I was only giving lettuce maybe every 2 weeks..Somebody said it wasn't essential...Gezzz I give red pepper but wasn't giving enough a day... I was always told red pepper was the highest in vitamin C? With the carrot is that a baby carrot a day or a small whole carrot? I do give him a baby carrot every other day..I knew about cucumber but he does love it...I feel he needs more of variety am I wrong?? I also heard recently they can have zucchini?? How much a day?? He hates tomato what could I use instead a day? I was told no more than a cup of food a day right...I've had piggies before but just now found out about all these dos and don't...Pet stores in America just sell them we have to learn I did buy yrs ago a book about piggies for dummy's but it didn't tell me all that you wonderful ladies do!! Thx for any and all help Shey

+Sheywh12 Green and Red Leaf lettuce are different than Romaine. You can give that daily. Red pepper isn't the highest in Vitamin C, it really doesn't matter though, you can feed which ever colour of pepper you like. You can feed a variety of vegetables, just need to be careful of feeding too high in calcium ones. Guinea Lynx is a great site you can visit, they have a whole veggie chart and it shows the contents of calcium.

My pigs are 5 months old and one is pregnant. I have heard they need more calcium due to growing. Thats ok, right?

A A Until 6 months old they need the extra Calcium, after they don't. For the pregnant piggy, she needs more calcium until after the piggies are weaned (which should be no later than 3 weeks old) That is when they sexually mature and need to be separated by sex.

If they don't finish their veggies do you leave the leftover in the cage so they can eat throughout the day or do you take leftovers out after a certain amount of time?

If there are still scraps when I tidy the cages later that evening I throw them out but that is very rare to happen, sometimes just a few pieces of shriveled lettuce. If stuff is being left, I would cut back what I give them at a time.
