Green pepper and red leaf lettuce are staples around here with a few other veggies mixed in now and again! Veggie time is the small furries' favourite time of the day!
Thank you so much for your videos, for half a year now I have wanted guinea pigs, as I have always owned hamsters and my current one is getting older I decided not to get any more hamsters and look for a pet that I can become more involved with and have more responsibility with which is why I thought of guinea pigs since we have had rabbits and gerbils in the past as well. Although I do have the money space and dedication to these beautiful animals I decided not to be selfish and get them as currently due to my work hours and having a boyfriend I decided to wait, as it is not fair to get them and not have enough time to spoil them as they deserve. I will continue to watch your videos as I haven't given up hope of getting guinea pigs, I am going to wait for a better time so thank you Abby! Although I cannot get guinea pigs right now I am learning loads from you and absorbing all the amazing information you provide so I can get a pair of guinea pigs one day :) Thanks!
Hayden_ Marie16 hi 👋 I’ve recently lost my pet hamster RIP and now do move on from my state of depression I’m Thinking of getting guinea pigs but can you help? For veg can I feed them like 1 once a day I’ll give pellets, hay, water of-course but can I give them like only bell peppers or do u have to mix them up with other veg and how much veg is enough for 2 guinea pigs daily Thxxxx
If you are not a RU-vidr then I really would not have a guinea pig I just got a baby one so thank you for being on RU-vid I wish that you had 1 million subscribers
This has helped me so much, I am adopting two 4 month old girls and triple checking all my research and what you are showing is what I buy for myself too😂
I am so grateful I found your channel you have helped me so much with things surrounding guinea pigs I feed my guinea pigs this but split it into two meals!
I would just like to start off by saying thank you for making this video. After watching this, I realized that my guinea pig's diet was all wrong, and in fear of him having a bladder stone, I rushed him to the vet. That's where I found out he has a UTI. He's on medication right now and getting a lot better, but if it weren't for you, my guinea pig may have died, so thank you so much.
My girls have the same diet except I alternate every day between tomato and cucumber and as a treat (maybe 2 days a week) I give them broccoli. I just recently found out that cilantro couldn't be given to the pigs everyday ( thank you to Cari for that! 😊), so I used to feed cilantro everyday for breakfast. I read somewhere that it was fine to give it everyday but honestly I trust you guys way before I trust whatever website I found that on. Now it will just be another treat for the cuties. 😁
Don't feel bad sweetie When I got my first Piggie years ago I bought the book Guinea Pigsxfor dummies It told me all the things I'm learning now that probably took my piggies lives back then like feed them parsley daily etc. the lists goes on..So it's okay we are better parents now..I had decided no pamper piggies after my last died at 4 my mom had one and went into a home so I started research on Utube I also found skinny pigs1 and Cari and some other great ones!! Take care Shey
Broccoli and Cauliflower can cause has issues Cilantro 2 times a week rationed don't make it their whole diet..Parsley it a Holiday treat in my house like Xmas Guinealynx.com a great resource to show you high sugars, high calcium high fiber, high vitamin C Vitamin C is what they need and can't live without their body's don't make it or hold onto it.. High Calcium foods are your dark greens, Cabbage is another gas issue..Cucumbers hold no vitamins for them at all Although it's a nice treat shouldn't be their daily food... Carrots in moderation as too much sugar is not good either... A small min carrot once a day as a treat is okay I use Guinealynx.com for everything and I watch Skinny Pigs1 on here Also Cari's Little piggies on Utube is a great person to learn from Lots of informative information..Good Luck take care I killed my piggie years ago feeding too much Parsley...I feed Mine daily parsnips, celery Leaves or a little celery cut in small pieces as it's stringy Also Green leaf lettuce, Green Pepper, no more than a cup a day also a half a cherry tomato a day has never hurt mine!! So people say it cause mouth sores...Hope this helps you out I do understand how frustrating it can be Specially if your in US I can't even locate a qualified exotic vet!! Take care Shey
I love how you chop and arrange them so lovingly! :-) I appreciate someone who does their research and due diligence about what you feed your adorable piggies.
This video reconfirmed what I was feeding to my piggies was a good balanced diet. I feed the same things to my piggies (minus the tomatoes because none of them like them) Thank you for all the great info. I always recommend your videos to those thinking about getting guinea pigs.
+skinnypigs1 Thanks for this video! Portion size is something I've always wrestled with. There's a lot of mixed and confusing information out there. I'm glad you post videos like this. I know you've done your research and I trust your recommendations. Thanks for helping people like me be the best guinea pig owners possible. Keep up the good work!
My piggies are carrot lovers.... we've been doing a couple baby carrots each twice a day... need to cut back on that, I guess. :) I picked up parsley to feed the baby pig who is under 6 months. So far, he's not really interested, but I'll keep trying. I switched from romaine to green and red leaf lettuce, too. Your videos are really helping me be a better piggy mom.
+LooBoosShedZoo Thank you! It really is nice to have free hands! Sometimes is hard to judge if I have the camera angled okay, since I cannot see anything for reference but for the most part is decent.
I follow your diet to a T . I just lost my all most 8 year old girl Binker to bladder stones it brock my heart . She passed 7 stones but was not able to pass the last one . But she was not on your diet plan tell the last cupule of years. So I am all was so scared of a nether bout of stones so I do what ever I can to try and prevent them from forming . So I thank you so much for this great diet I. I have passed it on to a some friend and ether group keep up the good work Aby all the piggy's thank you :) and me tow .
+Guineapigs andmore (Guinea pig's and more) Oh so sorry to hear that! Bladder stones are awful. Sadly some just get them because of genetics but I truly believe a lot of them can be prevented.
Thanks so much for this great video! This is the clearest instruction I've seen so far on the Internet. I saved this one into my reading list. I'm very glad to know this about the spinach!! I will pick up some green or red leaf lettuce today.
my piggy is so picky she hates bananas and freeze dried bananas, freeze dried apples, freeze dried blue berries and fresh blueberries, tomatoes, romaine lettuce, the green part of bok choy, and she throws a fit if i dont give her bell peppers but luckily my dog loves vegetables and fruits so when i feed bok choy i cut the white part off for my piggy and feed my doggo the green part and since i only have 1 pig and she almost killed other pigs at the shelter i give my dog part of the pepper so it dosent go to waste and in the summer and spring i set some out for the local birdies
Hey sweetheart, Cilantro and Peppers and carrots stay so fresh in those thick green bowls they sale on Amazon to keep veggies fresh... (Make sure you get the original set not those thin ones) I have the link if your interested?? I love them there really cheap..For instance Cilantro and lettuce will stay fresh over a week!! Just thought I would share those green bowls Information if you put paper towels like 1 folded in half per bowl to absorb the water build up and change the towel if needed they are the BOMB!! Works wonderful!!! I've wonder about those Pepper keepers I love the onion and tomato keeper..Anyway Just a FYI there take care Shey
Tristin Pearl the things is her videos aren’t really that edited which I love, and the entire video is one shot. So yes it would be a lot but it’s not as hard as you would think
Thx nice to know about soft poop have had that issue before lol...Great video as always & time to chop up Rocky's veggies and give Taz his dried veggies lol...Take care Shey
Abby, can you do a video on the inside of your health notebook for your guinea pigs weights and that? It would really help give me an idea how to like set mine up. Thanks
Thank you for the tip on lettuce my littlest pig lil foot #twinningpigs but anyways he had sort of white pea so I'm going to switch love your channel by the way
My piggies are very picky. They refuse to eat bell peppers and tomatoes among other things. Im happy they can live on carrots, chickory and endive. They also do not like most fruits so.. Lettuce is something they like occasionally..
thank you! this helped me so much, i have been looking for what to feed my new pigs daily and how much to feed them. i like this video because even though you show the amounts in pairs of pigs, it still gives me an idea of how much to feed them and not to feed them too much. i do have one question, how much pellets do i feed my pigs everyday? in measurements? i was thinking about getting measuring cups to measure how many pellets to feed my pigs.
i used to top up my pellet bowl whenever it was empty, but once i realised i got it all wrong i searched online for what amount i should feed them. most say to feed 1/8 cup of pellets per day (i feed my only guinea pig 22g a day and he finishes everything but has lots of veggies to eat with that)
Can you make a video on how to make your guinea pig like vegetables? my boys havent even tried to eat the vegetables ive tried to give the, i give them exactly what u have in this video
+mara x All you can do if offer them each day in small pieces and eventually they will try them. Some pigs are nervous about trying new foods, that is just a natural instinct to be cautious.
Thank you so much for making this! We too have had issues with bladder stones in our pigs. I am just wondering about the Oxbow Urinary support tabs that I have seen in your 'room tour video'. Do you notice if it makes their pee pink after eating it? I asked our vet if she heard of this too but she wasn't sure. I'm thinking it's the cranberry content but am just curious if you or others have experienced the same with their pigs and this product? Thanks :)
+Amanda Armstrong Never seen red or pink pee. I would be concerned it is from a bladder problem or did you literally only see it after on of those were fed? Isolated incident.
I have a problem with my one Piggie named Penny, she always steals food from her sister, and even though she's younger than my other Pig my half a year, she's so much bigger! she's slightly on the heavy side, and I don't know how to make sure that they get the same amount besides standing there and watching (did that the other day, had to keep Penny away for 10 minutes before I got distracted and stole what was left)
Thank you so much! There are a lot of websites saying what they can or can not eat, but not portions or anything. So thank you again! I can finally have a good understanding of what I should feed my guinea pigs! I definitely will be heading to the farmers market this week end :)
Why don't you give your pigs cilantro everyday? ... I give mine some every day, is that bad?? The guinea pig shelter I got my four piggies from said that I should give them a bit every day. Also I loveee your videos! I've been binge watching them lol
I get like ten veggies and feed different bits once a day or twice depending (split up never more than one leaf or bit each) I'm so used to feeding two piggies that now feeding just the one is kinda confusing for me and I think I'm probably giving him too much
My guineas get 2 tubs (curry tubs) full of vegetables a day. For one feeding I use - 1 bell pepper sliced into half into peices Half a big carrot Cucumber (quater and diced then split into two) 2 leaves of gem lettuce Handful of kale. I've had my guineas for a while now, they seem healthy and i always think im under feeding them. They have hay everyday & dry food. They also get dandelion salad on the top. Am i over feeding mine? Thanks
So do you give them this serving of vegetables once a day in the morning only or do you give another vege meal at night too? I do my veges once at night and pellets once in the morning. I switched them to your low calcium veges back in the summer but I still see small white residue spots occasionally. Any tips?
Hi, my Guinea pigs live in a really big cage with wood shadings and hay as a bedding. I don't know if it's relevant. The ting is both my piggies have dirt in there nose. What I what to know is if it is dangerous. I have one more question, one of my Guinea pigs drinks so much water. It means one hole bottle (0,5liter) will be empty at the end of the day. But she docent pee a lot. Is it something to be concerned about? Excuse the bad grammar and spelling. I'm from Sweden and have dyslexia.
+skinnypigs1 I'm not sure what they are called but it's a light colour and no dirt just wood. They eat different type of vegetables because they don't like the same food every day. Often its some kinds of Leafs and Carrot and often a bell pepper. And they also always have hay and pellets.
I've been thinking about switching from baby carrots to regular carrots cut on a mandolin for my piggies because those baby carrots aren't cheap! I noticed you said you peel your carrots - is that just something you like to do, or should it always be done?
I know this is a veggie video but I was wondering if you knew what the clips were called that you use to hang your hay bags with? I'm gonna get some cherry tomatoes for my pigs to try today. They love green peppers but not red :)
ok thanks :) I just got my guinea pig last week and i'm going to be getting her a friend this week, my problem is that i want to get a new cage but every C&C cage is so expensive to ship to Portugal, any sugestions on cheaper websites?
@@skinnypigs1 hi! First off, I'm a new guinea pig owner and I find your videos very informational! Thanks for that! (: Secondly, according to your video, you gave carrots to the piggies in the morning as a treat and you said it should only be given 1x a day so why do you give it to them in the afternoon as a treat again? Please do correct me if I'm wrong or misunderstood because I would like to follow this routine. Thanks again! ♡♡♡♡
I split it up and give some at morning and some at night I also give them a couple pea flakes durning the day same with their 1/8 of pellets I give half in morning and half at night around 8:00 pm😉
guinealover 315 Your actually not supposed to. Not all piggy owners recommend doing that but if you want to as a personal preference, 1 or 2 should be more than enough!
The morning is better it gives them the rest of the day to digest and they probably haven’t eaten all there pellets also it better if you go to school/work
Hi! Do you have any suggestions for what to do when my guinea pig does not like peppers, tomatoes or carrots? If he could he would eat a ton of letuce but thats the only veg he likes 😕
so do you recommend baby carrots over regular carrots because they have lower calcium? People say that baby carrots have more sugar but have less calcium so i'd rather give my piggies the carrot with less calcium. (I've been giving romaine lettuce and have noticed calcium deposits so I will be switching to green leaf lettuce) So I'm super cautious about the calcium content given
The require about a cup of veggies a day and you can give that however you like to them. Mine get their main lot in the morning and then a veggie as a snack in the afternoon.
I feed my guinea pig this and I'll give him cucumber. Should I not give him cucumber? I give him 1/8th cup of pellets a day. I also give him a urinary support tablet once a day and he still pees white here and there. Is that OK? Any advice? It's not gritty or anything he just leaves a trace of white on his fleece from time to time.
Cucumber is just fine, my one boy gets bloated from it, so I don't feed it. It is normal for small amount of white to be left behind, just wouldn't want it to be very opaque, gritty or all over.
+skinnypigs1 Thank you so much for your advice. I'll try not to worry then unless it's gritty or a huge amount. :).... oh and btw I would say it's opaque. I can't see through it. but it is powdery and in small amounts. Is that bad?
i had the same issue and my vet said that guinea pigs may have diff amounts of solutes in their urine and may change the color. its notging to worry about :) white urine could be due to calcium being too high :) good luck!
Hello! I was wondering how many cups of veggies should I give two boars? I googled it and it said about one cup. However, google is far from a guinea pig expert like you. What do you recommend?
I really like your diet plan! I do have a question though. For vitamin C I use powder and put the powder on a cucumber for them if I did your diet plan plus the cucumber with the vitamin C powder would that be too many veggies for them? Also I have a three month old Guinea pig and I think I had heard in one of your other videos that they need a different diet than adult Guinea pigs? Could I feed your diet to my three month old or would she need something else? Thank you!!!
If the 3 month old piggy is not with adult piggies (6 months and older) they can have alfalfa based pellets but otherwise their diet is the same as adults. If the young piggy is with adults, they can share the same diet, have timothy based pellets and can be taken out for special feedings of cilantro, parsley or kale (something with a bit of extra calcium).
+skinnypigs1 awesome! I will start feeding her some parsley separately. Thanks so much for your reply! I really enjoy watching your videos I feel like I'm always learning something new!
They get veggies once a day and 1/8th of a cup of pellets per pig, then they have hay at all times, that is 80% of their diet (hay). I give fruit as a treat maybe once a week or less.
