Hello and welcome to MOPEG👋.
In this virtual tour we took a walk in the urban area of Pigneto.
Pigneto is one of the most popular neighborhoods for young Romans and tourists, thanks to its lively and alternative atmosphere.
In this area there are vintage and food markets, street food, traditional trattorias, ethnic restaurants, cafes, nightclubs, etc. etc.
The pedestrian island, located in the heart of Pigneto, hosts a fruit and vegetable market during the day, while at night it turns into one of the trendiest areas of Rome.
Pigneto was born around 1870 as a popular area, on the vegetable gardens, villas and vineyards that were present in this area before the 18th century.
The neighborhood extends, in the shape of a triangle, from Piazzale Labicano (just outside Porta Maggiore) between Via Prenestina and Via Casilina and Acqua Bullicante.
Its name comes from the presence of a long row of pine trees, planted by the Caballini family, along the wall of the 18th-century Villa Serventi.
Thanks to its atmosphere, Pigneto has served as a film setting for several movies such as Roberto Rossellini's Roma Città Aperta (1945), Pier Paolo Pasolini's Accattone (1961) and many others.
