In this video I show how Instamorph thermoplastic can be used to make a quick mold, and how the very same stuff can be used to make an object from a mold. We also look at an easy way to get thorough color using alcohol inks.

Sarah Barnhill hi Sarah 👋 it may not work for this but I use a HOT KNIFE for Resin work, to get the drips off of the back side of my paintings & coasters etc.. so your idea is a great idea there 👌. For anyone who wants to know.. A ‘Hot Knife’ is like the ones used for cutting thru styrofoam for shaping. Some are like a wire cheese cutter DON’T get the cheese cutter lol 💨 but if ya look around eBay or amazon there’s another kind that looks like an Exacto knife & they come with many different blades that can be used in the same knife. Total game changer for resin drips! I don’t tape off the backside of anything anymore.. a hot knife thru resin drips is like cutting thru warm BUTTER! Cheap cheap ($12) and sooo practical. It may work for this as well.. if ya used the tip of a blade and get in & out kind of quick 🤔

Yes! Love this stuff. Some points to add: - This is sold under a million names because it's not patented. The actual name of the material itself is 'polycaprolactone'. Helps with searching for it - It can really stick well to certain other plastics, especially when it's really hot. I was worried for you, feel like you kinda got lucky not to end up with a permanent blob on your castle door! - It's pretty strong, you can really build stuff with it. My favourite trick with that is, if your part needs screws or bolts, you can wrap it around them and when it cools you've got perfect threaded holes right there

Yes, epoxy clay and epoxy putty can be used to cast items out of those mold. Also, that is the same plastic used in Worbla, so you can join the pieces you make to Worbla easily. There is also sheets of this material available, as well as colored beads that can be mixed it for some intense colors.

Seems like a potential claymation substitute, but that it might take longer in practice because you have to heat the joints to reposition them. A heat gun to the entire piece might make it sag if the heat isn't focused enough, but that could be worth a try!

Hello I used instamorph to make a mold after I saw your video. It completely bonded with the face of the figure I was molding, and when I tried to remove it, it was VERY difficult to remove and it tore off some features from the figure. So if anyone out there plans to do this, please use a figure you don't mind destroying or test a small amount on the back of the figure or something to make sure the plastics don't bond to each other.
