B side to the single 'The Youngest Was The Most Loved'. 'A Song From Under The Floorboards' written by (Devoto/Tomlinson/Adamson/Doyle/McGeoch). Published by EMI Virgin Music Ltd. / Rykomusic Ltd / Domino Music Publishing / Mute Song
Song from under the floorboards was the song that fully expressing me back in the days,Devotto was singing my life literally. For me although I much like and respect Morrisey,no one can cover the excellency of Magazine in that song(the pomposity of Devotto and that fckn Barry Adamsons baseline were out of this world)
themusicfella ..and Simple Minds went on to become stratospheric stadium stars! No justice eh?!Did you see Magazine reformed?Saw em in Sheffield twice once with Barry Adamson on bass and then a year later to promote No thyself (brilliant album)..both great gigs
Tanky Attwood. You are right. I preferred Simple Minds as they were then. I never seen Magazine again. The Real Life gig in Manchester in 2009 looked amazing on here. If they ever get together again I will certainly, make the effort. John McGeoch was one of the most influential guitarist of that era IMO ;-)
Not that it matters after a year but no, you are wrong, the original is better. Sparser, more evocative of the disconnect the song alludes to. Only my opinion of course, one mans meat is another mans murder after all.
How's this for synchronicity. Was looking for a live Magazine version of this song. Had no idea Moz did a cover! I stroll through the comments and see yours. The last song I was listening to was Cosmic Dancer. Cosmic, indeed. 🍻
I adore this song, especially the way Moz changed "I know a good thing when I see it" to "I know a good thing when I speak it." it's a telling example of how Morrissey has mastered the craft of being so very deliciously egotistical with lyricism.
A Magazine concert in the Lyceum, London, was one of my most memorable live shows ever. What Morrissey does with this song of theirs is amazing: it gives it a certain lightness to this dark song that makes it perhaps not only more accessible, but also lighter.
Morrissey - A Song From Under The Floorboards - Studio Version 0136am 3.11.23 not as good, certainly not, as the original. anyhow; they haven't actually "shared a song".... i think the statement might have referred to: doin' a duet. would that be hideous, do you think??? probably...
The changes to the lyrics are weird at first, but they sound much more like Morrissey than the original Magazine words, and they still resonate with Dostoyevsky.
Agggh. One of his best covers. His singles from Ringleader of The Tormentors will always be special to me. I had just became obsessed with Morrissey in 06. Saw him live on the Ringleader tour before the album came out and have continued to be obsessed ever since. His last truly great album in my books. Still love ‘em to pieces tho. Morrissey forever
Better late than NEVER!! Keep on being Moz 💐 obssesed, it's Vital‼️ Morrissey obsessed since 1984 and NEVER, EVER, Gave Up‼️Ⓜ️💐🎙️👓📚💪🏼 He (They...) saved my life, and it's not the usual "cliché"... 😉✌🏼 VIVA Ⓜ️❤️💤🅰️ (Yes, with three 'Z'... 😍🤩😍)
this barely diverges from the original in the arrangement and instrumentation - they are per magazine and mozzer simply croons the odd differing lyric. woefully short of the menace of devoto. utterly insipid.
I am angry I am ill and I'm as ugly as sin. I don't know what keeps me alive and kicking. I know the meaning of life it doesn't help me a bit. I know beauty and I know a good thing when I speak it.
THIS WHOLE COMMENTS APP. DOESN'T KNOW HOW ARROGANT AND STUPID IT LOOKS . I WISH THEY WOULD JUST TAKE IT AWAY THIS STUFF USED TO BE CALLED' ''TALKING IN THE STREET'!
I adore this cover! True enough to the original, whilst being original enough to make it worthwile. Sadly, I never got to see Morrissey do this live, which I regret. I have seen Magazine perform it though, so I can't really complain!
***** That is not an improvement on the original. He lacks conviction in the lyrics and lacks the nuance and snap of Devoto's delivery. Also he criminally changes words. That's not to say I don't rate him or like his version - it's good to hear someone make a decent stab at an absolute classic.
***** So you can opine but no one else can? Purlease, get over yourself. You made the bold claim whilst pompously berating another poster - I merely posted my opinion and backed up my reasons for holding that position. Any suggestion that my opinion is more than just that is simply projection of your own insecurity.
***** Your use of cod psychology and your attempts to belittle someone with a different opinion - which was proffered in no stronger a manner than your own - does not make you an intellectual, it makes you look like an arrogant tosspot. Conditioned ignorance - you really think suggesting other people's opinions are less free than your own is going to win you any arguments? You appear to like "the truth". The truth is, Magazine wrote and created an absolutely brilliant song. As with most brilliant songs it is a rare occasion that someone improves upon the original. Morrissey, in MY fucking opinion, does a good job with the song but in no way does he improve upon it. Anyone viewing this little conversation do yourselves a favour, listen to the original and see what you think. Just remember to post your opinion, particularly if it differs to the pompous amateur psychologist i2v2s's, with a fair smattering of "IMHO"s - lest, instead of substantiating his own opinion, will simply indulge in strawmen, ad homs and psychobabble!
...listen to the Magazine original & you'll realise this is a lazy cover...brings nowt new the table...ergo it's a pointless cover...lazy Stanley Baker, sorry Steven Patrick...
***** If anyone is laughing I can assure you they are laughing at you with your self-aggrandizing posting style and desperation to appear clever whilst belittling anyone who has a viewpoint contrary to your own. I could post a lengthy, loquacious discourse on the rest of your ridiculous post but for the sake of brevity: It's my opinion, get fucking over it.
Just like with That’s Entertainment cover, Moz carefully allows us to hear and understand the magnificent lyrics of the song which are thrown so easily in the original.
"Then I just got tired". Sorry loves, the orig is WAY better but I'm well chuft that M & Co took the time to do a cover. "Shot By Both Sides" would be more appropriate. Anyways...... it was a treat to see my lefty friends wilt over the opinions from one of their "teen heroes". o7 Morrissey
I am angry, I am ill and I'm as ugly as sin I don't know what keeps me alive and kicking I know the meaning of life, it doesn't help me a bit I know beauty and I know a good thing when I speak it This is a song from under the floorboards here is a song from where the wall is cracked my force of habit, I am an insect and I must confess I'm very proud of that I have known the highest and I've known the best I accord death with all its due respect but the brightest jewel inside of me glows with pleasure at my own stupidity I used to make phantoms I could later chase Images of all that could be desired Then I got tired of counting all these so-called blessings And then I just got tired Songwriters: HOWARD DEVOTO / John Alexander Mcgeoch / DAVE FORMULA / Barry Anthony Adamson / JOHN DOYLE
I don't mind it. Sometimes it sounds like he's detatched from the lyrics or he's reaching for a feeling or idea that's above him, but other times it's a nice, low key energy he brings.
Sorry don't like it , and I'm a Smiths and Magazine fan ( and indeed saw Mozzer singing with the Nosebleeds as support to Magazine at the Ritz in Manchester a million years ago), to much messing with the lyrics and the drums far to prominent in the mix..C+ for effort.
I hate it when I have to totally re-evaluate a musician or a band. I always knew Morrisey's had something to him even in the 80s back when I was really, really not a Smiths fan. If I was feeling mean I might accuse Morrissey of being a very, very poor man's Bryan Ferry. Morrissy is certainly NO Bryan Ferry and I suspect Morrisey, along with many other musicians prefer to avoid any unfavorable direct comparison with Bryan Ferry but I dig solo Morrisey! In decades past I wouldn't have guessed I would EVER say that but there it is! Next stop:The Smiths demo of ''The Death Of A Disco Dancer'' ''Meat is murder''? Johnny Rotten: ''It's okay to eat cows though because they are really, really stupid...''
