We'll be upgrading Goldbrand to Eltonbrand in this ridiculous Morrowind Easter Egg! I never even knew about this Easter Egg beforehand. It's really strange. #morrowind #elderscrolls #easteregg
I remember reading about Eltonbrand on early 2000s "cheat" websites and thinking it was the dumbest fake rumor ever, on par with Mew being under the truck in Pokemon. Then I found Eltonbrand in the Morrowind Construction Set data and was totally shocked.
Dude same here. I looked for so many fake "hidden doors" in this game because of the cheats websites. But I also figured out how to start the tribunal and blood moon dlc on the GOTY edition on xbox. Such a good time and great game.
you found the DLC? A guy attacks you in your sleep and the other one is a dialogue options loads of NPCs have. How hard were they to find for you? Do you not usually level up past level 6 or talk to NPCs
That moment you actually find mew in RBYG and walk out of the LAN tournament with it successfully given to you for winning. The other ways to get mew involve glitching.
It just sunk to me that "To upgrade my magical sword, which I got from an ancient demon, I first must talk to a Mudcrab Merchant, as I hope he is willing to talk to me as a vampire." is the kind of nonsense I love this game so much for!
I remember playing this game back in the day and I had a character going with like 50 hours in and just wandering around dungeons and all of a sudden I got vampirism and I'm like okay I'll just cure it but I couldn't and now the whole game changed and I didn't expect that at all
The further back you go, the more obscure the secrets become. They weren't really meant to be discovered, maybe that 1 in a million player. Especially before the internet.
Dude I played Morrowind back not long after it came out and all my friends were really into it as well. I could call them if I got stuck lol sounds cheesy now. But sometimes you just had to grind grind grind. And sometimes give up and come back to it later if at all. I still remember this half flooded temple with all these riddles and a giant energy shield blocking a certain area. I tried for MONTHS but couldn't figure it the fuck out. 15 years later I still think about it. The Devs were smart with this one in particular cause they made the shield wall in such a way you couldnt glitch past it. Plus this was before we figured out the console commands.
Morrowind came out in 2002, everyone with a gaming pc had dialup. Some already had DSL which was marketed as ‘broadband’. There were plenty of gaming forums. In particular there’s little the moderators and regulars on Gamespy’s Morrowind forum did not know about the game.
@@Theclaidheamhmor I used dial-up in the late 90s, by 2002 I had dsl. In general it’s true you couldn’t get gaming information just as easily as now, but in particular Morrowind forum members were knowledgable and dedicated, almost fanatical about the game. I remember the long defunct Game-spy forum regulars included some well respected modders. Pre-Reddit, useful gaming forums were a little harder to find I’m not denying it, but there was still a lot going on.
Eltonbrand is a reference to basketball actually, named after NBA player Elton Brand. Taken from UESP: The odd nature of this sword seems to stem from Bethesda developer Mark Nelson. The NBA basketball player Elton Brand was a member of his favorite team in college, the Duke Blue Devils (itself referred to by his nickname "BlueDev", and the object ID of the sword), whose most bitter rivals are the North Carolina Tar Heels. The number "11171" is thought to be a reference to Nelson's birthday, 11/1/1971. The name of the quest, "Shashev's Key", is also a reference to the long-time coach of the Blue Devils, Mike Krzyzewski, whose last name is pronounced "shə-SHEF-ski".
"How did people figure this out?" What probably happened is someone found Eltonbrand in the construction set, and dug into the scripts that cause it to spawn. If not, it could have just been happenstance after someone talked to half the NPC's in the game to find one that'll actually talk to you.
Large open world RPGs like these had lots of volunteer beta testers (sometimes dozens or hundreds). Developers would talk to the beta testers and give them instructions to test certain quests or other things specifically. So a number of people in the community would have prior knowledge of quests and how they worked, then they would go on forums and talk about it, and the knowledge spreads into the general community from there.
As TES since Morrowind get shipped with their CS, its most likely that someone was scouting in the editor for cool weapons and found this. With other older games who have very weird cheat codes or easter eggs, I'm still amazed. Just not with TES as those are easy to find in the editor 😂
I remember bringing up how crazy this secret was as a kid to my step-dad who instantly was like "Wait, Elton Brand? The basketball player?" and sure enough I found he's why it's called that. When being into nerd stuff and jock stuff crosses over!
"Vampire Dust Has No Effect On You" "Yeah, I'm gonna reload. I have no idea why, but I'm going to reload". I have never related to something so hard in my life
The "go to hell Carolina" was referencing North Carolina Tar Heels. The elf that fell from the sky at the start was also a part of this... This dev hated the tar heels and left a few eastereggs in the game to voice their hate.
Ok so the dude who falls in front of you at Seydaneen is Tar Heil, a play on the name Carolina Tarheels. Elton Brand was a player for the Duke, their rivals. One of the programmers went to Duke.
@ilove bigbrother you could be the change you want to see and go make up extremely meticulous and detailed quests that people will compare to one off immersion breaking easter eggs. Or cry about it more. Whichever is easier for you.
@@Chance57 - Yes, because we all have time to just stop our current lives to chase the betterment of a hobby we spend free time doing... or how about those who actually make a living making games put more effort into those games (I’m pretty sure that’s what he’s asking for)...
I like how you can here the difference in the confidence of Mickeys goofiness from a year ago to now. It’s subtle but I can hear it for sure. Happy for his success.
The name, "Shashev's Key", Is a reference to one of the developers favorite basketball teams coach Mike Krzyzewski(its polish). Elton Brand was also a player for the team(Duke Blue Devils.)
One of the Artifact items is only accessible if you a vampire: the Spellbreaker shield. It is a quest you can only do as a vampire (doesn't matter which clan, this is generic vampire quest). Also there is a unique item the Blacksun Shield (or something like that) that only spawns to the world when you are doing a particular Aundae clan quest.
@@randomnutcase8926 UESP clearly states the shield only spawns in the game after you accepted the vampire quest, so unless you added it with console commands, it's unlikely you could get it w/o being a vampire
@@Atoru Is this the quest where you have to kill some vampires sealed in a cave? Formerly followers of Azura possibly? If so I would have avoided vampirism with a potion to cure it.
@@randomnutcase8926 Yes, this is the quest where the sealed vampire requests you to bring Spellbreaker to break the seal, then attacks you. Still, the quest isn't available until you are vampire, so it's more likely you cured it afterwards with the Molag Bal quest, instead of avoiding it, as avoiding would mean the vampire attacked you on sight (even with Porphyric Hemophilia disease, as I checked that)
For anyone wanting to be a Vampire, the Dwermer ruins west of the Ashlander camp wich name I dont remember correctly (but it starts with "E") is FILLED with Vampires and cattle. In fact is possibly the ONLY dungeon in Morrowind that trully was constructed to scare the shit out of you, due to the amount of time those vampire assholes jump from the dark corners.
Thing is in Morrowind there's 3 different clans of vampires given the 3 play styles. Combat, stealth, and magic. The clan that infects you determines which skills get boosted. Best to find the clan that best suits your play style.
Whenever I played the Mages Guild and had to find Vampires of Vvardenfell vol. 2, the dwemer ruin Galom Daeus has a bunch of vampires and they infected me every time. Its really close to where he went in this video, he might have passed it. For the record, they are the stealth clan.
From what I remember you couldn't go to get yourself infected by going to the main clan HQ, they would keep attacking you anyway. Best to just visit one of the tombs or ruins. All these random vampires actually belong to clans, you need to check a guide to know which one specifically. Galom Daeus is also a part of Temple questline, you got to to kill Raxle Berne - they are stealth/rogue clan. Druscashti are Quarra - hard hitting warriors. Aundae are in a tomb placed somewhere at Sheogorad (north Morrowind)- mages. In Ald'ruhn there was a quest for a noblewoman who wanted to convince her son to not become a vampire. You can also google out Marara and her ring, it's quite good.
Another perk of having and completing the Master Index quest: while all conventional fast travel options and services are banned, because of the special nature of the Master Index teleportation (it is through dialogue topics not the "travel" option), you can still use it as vampire. So you can still have 10 fast travel locations (the forts) + what ever place you have marked for recall. Makes life as a vampire just that much easier.
More importantly... Aundae - the only way to get the Darksun Shield and Light of Day That shield is crazy good, especially if you are doing a "no enchanting" run.
When we were kids I had a good friend that this was very much a "my dad works at Nintendo" moment for me when he told me about this particular sword and I vehemently didn't believe his shit until he actually showed me it in game.
I remember reading about this and then trying it out. It was a pain, but luckily I already had a vampire character to test it on. I really miss the style of game Morrowind was (aside from the combat). Nice walk down memory lane here.
Eltonbrand is super powerful. Goldbrand is out of its enchantment after 10 hits, Eltonbrand - after 100 strikes. So it's a massive difference, not only better stats, but 10-times longer enchantment duration makes it worthwhile. With Morrowind Patch Project - you only need the gold in your inventory to get the upgrade, so I've played with this weapon a lot.
i think the idea behind all those convoluted quests is that this is a massive rpg and the goal of playing this game is to put away a month of your grade school life to walk everywhere, enter every hole and talk to every1, until u stumble across all quests by necessity
As someone who regularly takes the Atronach birthsign, the Mace of Molag Bal is invaluable early-mid game. It is the only item with the absorb magicka effect, making it my go-to method or regenerating magicka.
Keep making these videos man, I'm a bit younger so I only played from Oblivion on, but I love seeing and learning about the older games. What a trip. Peace dawg.
people probably found about Eltonbrand with the creation kit and then it spread of there. Also selling artifacts instead of using them has paperweights in a place you take over (or the solstheim house) smh
@@RadioactiveSince1990x Actually on second thought that's what I was thinking of. Been so long I mixed them up. I remember eventually using the construction set to move Creeper there.
In Oblivion you can go straight to getting the Mehrunes Dagger due to it being dlc. My first playthrough I did this and used it through basically the whole game, including shivering isles, where it immediately killed the final boss.
Lol 8:30 having full Fatigue will increase your hit chance by 25%, and being depleted of fatigue will decrease your hit chance by 25%. Just recently got into morrowind and having a blast finding out so many creative tricks to min max builds :)
One good thing about fighting an Altmer vampire with Goldbrand that does fire damage: their 100% weakness to fire. 50% from race, another 50% from being a vamp.
I don’t know if some of the mods might mess around with the vampire quests and the few times I’ve done them, I’ve stuck to the “mage vampires” (as I played as a magic focused character), but I never experienced any particular problems with those vampire quests. The only issues I can think of might be the “kill X number of vampires from other clans”, if you’ve already cleared out a lot of vampires before the quest starts (as it will not count these towards your tally, the quest might be impossible to complete). Sure, some of them might be a bit odd (e.g. one dealing with a young Dunmer whose mother wants you to convince him NOT to become a vampire, where you basically has to take a dive so he’ll think vampires are wimps), but I haven’t found them to be broken. Bear in mind, though, that it seems that the game is expecting you not to go vampire until you’ve got some levels under your belt (and possibly some tricks up your sleeve, such as the Boots of Blinding Speed and navigation via Recall and Almsivi/Divine Intervention). Also, if you want to become a vampire, casting Weakness to Common Disease on yourself will make the likelihood of catching it far greater (incl. via the “check a vampire corpse’s inventory until you catch it” approach).
The most painful part of this video is when he uses Almsivi Intervention to get to Molag Mar only to load a save because he "had" to travel through water to reach Vivec, despite there being a silt strider and a ship in Molag Mar that could've taken him directly to Vivec.
Well, seeing you dying from falling.. Try enchanting something with 1pt. slowfall spell as constant effect - you'll become immune to the fall damage... As long as you wear that item.
You can still use the mages guild fast teleport service, as the mages deal with vampires. The woman in vivec at 16:41 could have warped you to Ald Ruhn
glad to see someone's still playing this in 2021.. my favorite game of all time, probably spent more time in this game than any other.. but eltonbrand is not a very good weapon, i think sunder might be the best weapon in the game
The Daedric Crescent is the best weapon in the game, excluding a custom ebony sword with shock damage. That's based on damage output, mainly. But the crescent also paralyses when you hit, so there's a huge benefit to that.
The way to make most of Creeper and Mudcrab Merchant, when selling items they cannot afford right away, is to also take items in return, and then later sell them back, once their gold reserves are replenished. So let's say you want to sell an item worth 10 000 to the Creeper, who only has 5000. So sell it, but take back items worth 5000 in total to make up for the real value, and then sell tgem back to get the remaining 5000. This way you will get the full 10 000 from a merchant, who only had 5000 / day to spend.
@@IzraelGraves Creeper and Mudcrab Merchant are considered creaturers, not NPCs by the engine. Transactions with them don't go through the normal mercantile checks. They buy and sell items for face value.
Missed opprotunity to edit in Nicholas Cage screaming "I'M A VAMPIRE!" at the 12:17 mark, but as the rest of the video was of very entertaining quality, I, as the humblest of watchers, shall like and subscribe regardless.
Could Tarhiel be a reference to North Carolina Tar heels?... a Duke rival. They had Vince Carter around that time, who was known for jumping very high.
does anyone else remember forums mentioning the “Fertile Crescent”? I remember it being an item that was found in the ocean floor somewhere, but can’t find anything about it. Did I make this up?!!!
Think you mean daedric crescent. You go to Tel Fyr find an amulet in a box put it on get teleported to a deadric realm kill a daedra lord and it is given to you. If you use mark and recall you can get two.
And the internet, not sure why he thinks we didn't have the internet when Morrowind came out. UESP (Unofficial Elder Scrolls Pages) is where I got a lot of my Morrowind info back in the day.
Yeah, back then i had to go to my friends house to print out Morrowind guides and other game's secrets. Good times when the internet wasn't literally EVERYTHING.
As I recall, there is one Ancestral Tomb with vampires near by Vivec, and another one nearby Keep Hlormaren (the closest one to Balmora). Those are atleast some of the easiest to get to places I recall. There is one also nearby Fort Buckmoth in Ald-ruhn. Another easy place to get to, for catching blood suckers disease.
"how did they think people were gonna figure this out?" - datamining. even back before the internet, weird nerd kids were messing around inside the code to 1) figure it out and 2) *find cool stuff*.
The construction kit makes it easy to see how the game is built. If you were searching for what weapons exist, you'd find eltonbrand. And then you'd want to figure out where in the game it is. Under the item, it will tell you how many instances exist in the world. When you see that none exist in the world, you'd look for it in quests, since that would be the most likely way to add an item that doesn't have an instance in the world. I love the construction kit. You could build a whole new game with it if you wanted.
I found the Elton Brand quest on a forum back in the day. The whole journey from Goldbrand on is one of my favorite weapons quests in the history of gaming.
If you max out you’re acrobatics you can use the Icarian flight scroll without using any slowfall or levitate spell to cushion you’re fall. You take zero damage from falling. It’d have to be incredibly high drop. I should’ve added in there that you’re acrobatic skill takes an additional 20+ after becoming a vampire. Ps. I truly admired the vampire versions of Morrowind. Becoming a vamp actually made a difference in you’re stats, not like Skyrim where it doesn’t do much except for granting you different spells and transformation form.
Daggerfall deadric quests are crazy. You have to find a book that gives you detailed instructions on how to summon the deadra you want, and it's fairly intricate. Time of day, season, maybe even exact days of the month or week. I can't remember the details. I just remember being thunderstruck by the complexity.
I love that people went the extra mile for this sword. It is a basketball reference and, this entire process has multiple basketball references in it. From the sword itself to the Key you have to obtain and, finally the exact amount of Gold you need to do it.
"How do people figure this out?" Digging though the construction set. Back in the day, a friend made me do this to get Eltonbrand. I think it was on my potion OP save and we fast-walk levitated across the map between the locations.
I almost soft locked my game getting this. Specifically w the vampirism cure. The room w winged twilight (that molag bal sent you to kill) was still blocked off. Thankfully max acrobatics helps glitch thru walls 😂
If I had to guess people poking around in the TESC Found it and started looking to see what it was rewarded from and worked their ways backwards from there. The Carolina thing apparently is a reference to a sports team and the Blue Devils or something.
Those speed boost + blindess boots are awesome. Get some magic resist and your not completely blind. Combine that with a permanent leviatation item and your you're own airline.
that is something i always ask myself. finding this shit out must have been so thrilling back in the day. now it's like 'where do i find X good weapon'
I try to tell my younger friend about this. Actually buying games to explore and play. He just buys a game then googles exploits and dupes for them. Why even pay 60 bucks to glitch the game out?
bit late now, but you can use any artifacts you find for the museum quest in mournhold. they buy( i think) pretty much all the unique items in the game from you.
Haha, see becoming a vampire in morrowind is all part of the experience. When you want it, you'll almost feel like you'll never get it. And when you don't want it ever, you pretty much always contract it lol.
The way they figured it out was through the TES Construction Set included with the game, you can see all assets and scripts and with little scripting knowledge you can read and understand how they work.
I don't know if anyone's bothered to tell you, but success rate of spells is also tied to your fatigue. Low fatigue results in more spell failures. Just leave yourself sit in place for a moment or so before casting, unless you're in combat, of course. Love morrowind, even in 2021 it's still an amazing game to come back to. Stumbled across your videos just today and I've got to say I enjoy them quite a bit!
theres a conjure weapon/armor glitch in oblivion that gets you basically daedric equipment with 0 weight. its been years but it has something to do with damaging the equipment then repairing it before the spell effect ends then you can unequip it and it goes into your inventory? something like that.
In skyrim the items aren't scaled to your level (other than random spawns and select unique items) you CAN get daedric armor at level 1 using the atronach forge and it will actually be daedric quality
by the way, i found a bug in morrowind today, the aldurun mages' guild quest giver, give her the chronicles book, then read the quest for detect potion, then go to Mar Gaan and kill the scamp in the hut. if you return to the mage's guild quest giver, all quest will be complete and you will also item returned to you that you never gave.
Forgot about the "VILE BEAST AWAY WITH YOUUUUUUUUU" voice line lol I heard about Eltonbrand from my only other buddy who played Morrowind; I think he found our about it from GameFAQs or something like that
Just a general note, your spellcasting is tied to your fatigue, so if you run around depleting fatigue and then try to teleport you will have a much lower chance. Not sure if you just forgot but it makes the game a lot easier.
@@antoniodiavolo a good question, been a while since i played. I think fatigue gives a penalty to "rolls" so your initial disposition with NPCs might be fine, but any attempt to persuade or bribe will be poor.
p sure you can grab the mace of molag bal at any level in skyrim, or at the very least you satisfy the level requirement by the time you rush over there
The official Morrowind guide book was a THICK boy with lots of details and I remember doing this easter egg once before the real advent of internet tips, so it was probably in there.
yea It's a college basketball team.. 111-71 his favorite player was on the team that beat Carolina at that score. The name of that key item is the last name of the coach of his favorite basketball team. Elton Brand was an NBA player after playing in college. It's a fun easter egg for sports geeks like myself.
I remember when I was fairly young and became a vampire in Morrowind and was so pissed off that my game was ruined by something I didn't plan on or expect happening that I stopped playing until well after I played through Oblivion.
