I think that Morshu's ultimatum is very clear from this piece. In an echo of Morshu's Paradise, Morshu sings about his dilemma: should he profit from war and misery by selling arms to Link, or live an ethical life of poverty? While we know that Morshu's profiteering eventually helps free the people of Coridai, there's no way that he can really know how Link will use the bombs, rope and lamp oil he sells ("used for good or bad, I can't tell"). At best, Morshu can only trust in his own judgement of character, and nobody else's ("the system's fine as long as I head it"). We cannot count Morshu as without fault though. By his own admission he's blinded by greed ("gotta make money and never look back"), and while he attempts to justify it with a rags-to-riches story ("I got dealt a bad hand..."), it ultimately rings hollow ("rubies [...] they are my life"). Morshu stays up at night, and while he'd have us believe that his fears are purely business ("To have good sleep is a rarity [...] If I dip into the red I'll pack up"), it's clear that his true fear is in selling arms to the wrong person ("I need a customer to count on"). Has Morshu truly become a monster? This is the tale of the Coridai Cretin.

Fantastic analysis, though I would say, the "customer to count on" was more of a desperation to have a true friend amidst all the faces in the crowd in his shop

"My way of life is frozen now... ""My friend sorry. Please come back..."" ...cause' I can't quit. I don't know how..." That confirmation makes me feel a lot better to know his more "moral than corrupt" perceived inclination & makes me feel happier with deciding to donate rubies to the Morshu foundation. (Also, as someone starting my 1st year uni, best of luck Burnt Lamp) Although I prefer the more moral theory of Morshu, that's a really good analysis, Sanchezman. Good stuff.

Morshu knows from bitter experience that if you get a reputation for lenience, people will only take advantage of you. He's known Link for a long time, and generally trusts him, but if you show favouritism, then where does it end? You can't give credit to everybody, so who's to judge that Link's sob story is more valid? At the same time, if you show callousness to your true friends, they may just as soon leave you behind. Link is a valuable repeat customer, and you want to be able to give him something he can't find anywhere else. So it's a balancing act. It's an ultimatum.

Lamp oil, rope, bombs, you want it? It's yours my friend, as long as you have enough rubies. Sorry Link, I can't give credit! Come back, come back, come back when you're a little- Lamp oil, burn up the turmoil One slip and I'm buried in the subsoil I sell bombs to keep me afloat But if I can't make money I'll sink my boat I have rope and it often sells well Used for good or bad, I can't tell But I don't care, cause if I get my pay I can open up and eat another day Gotta make money and never look back Ride on the train and keep it on track If I fall behind I just pick up the slack I got dealt a bad hand but it's not a bad pack I can't have debtors so I can't give credit The system's fine as long as I head it Don't lecture me on scripture - I've read it To loan is to lose - quote me, I've said it Rubies, the finest gems of them all They are my life and my port of call It's nice to be rich but at the end of the day As long as you have enough, it's ok The grind never stops - I can't get a fresh start Timings are tight so I gotta work smart Night and day are the same to me To have good sleep is a rarity Come back - I need a customer to count on A reliable person I can amount from I balance the books, but it's often no fable It's a horror story, and then I feel unstable If I dip into the red I'll pack up, cause its over I feel like every day I find a four leafed clover Cause I always find a way to turn a profit on my wares Too good to be true, but then again who cares Gotta make money and never look back Ride on the train and keep it on track If I fall behind I just pick up the slack I got dealt a bad hand but it's not a bad pack I can't have debtors so I can't give credit The system's fine as long as I head it Don't lecture me on scripture - I've read it To loan is to lose - quote me, I've said it

“Don’t lecture me on scripture- I’ve read it. ’To loan is to lose.’ Quote me, I’ve said it.” Easily the best line within this work. Morshu is aware of the apparent immorality within his work, as he’s read these scriptures, which is presumably referring to philosophical, or even religious text. However, although he agrees with the premise of the ethics, he finds himself disdaining those who subscribe to it, as he finds they misunderstand his situation and his moral code. He doesn’t hate those who cannot pay upfront, he just knows that, if he gives credit, he will inevitably fall. He believes that this is an important nuance which needs to be understood, and should be added on top of the base scriptures.
@JM-cl7pl
@JM-cl7pl Год назад
Note the “it’s nice to be rich, but at the end of the day, as long as you have enough, it’s ok.” This further exemplifies the point made by the line discussed within the head comment. Morshu outright says it’s ok to only be scraping by- he knows the feeling. He just finds that it is best for him, his family, and even his customers that he becomes as rich as possible, without ruining his moral code. He can refuse credit without tainting his morals, as he believes it is not an immoral thing to do.

Why do morshu parodies with original or semi-original lyrics always have such unironically great lines and rhyming. Seriously, well done on the lyrics on this one, there's some legitimately great lines here, and they're totally original if I'm not mistaken. The original doesn't even have lyrics. Fantastic.

This is strangely poetic, first time I listened to it, I figured Morshu's was a struggle between making a profit off of war or helping the righteous, in this case, Link. But as I listened to it again and again, I now believe that this is more about Morshu's internal conflict, his numerous flaws as a person, and the way he copes with these flaws, he is a man whose entire life revolves around making money, and the lyrics convey that there's a little more to this merchant than meets the eye. "Lamp oil, burn up the turmoil" Morshu opens up with a wish, hoping that the lamp oil that he sells to his customers could somehow help him burn up the inner turmoil in his head, his demons that have been feasting on his negativity for years and years, turning him into what many believe to be a bitter, greedy man. "One slip and I'm buried in the subsoil" refers to how, if Morshu messes up even once, not only will his demons take over, but it's likely he has made many enemies over the years, Link is kind-hearted and would never actively seek to harm him, but Morshu is an arms dealer, selling to anyone and everyone, if he shows even a tiny bit of weakness, they will fall upon him like vultures, feasting upon his flesh and leaving his remains to sink beneath the soil. "But if I can't make money, I'll sink my boat" Morshu reaffirms that, if he fails to keep his revenue, he might as well off himself, as it'll likely cause less suffering than the alternative of struggling to live. This also gives more value to rupees in his eyes, they are not only currency, but they are a source of strength, when his enemies see his vast wealth, they are no longer emboldened, in fact, they fear him, and he himself finds strength of will, finds purpose, and finds the courage he needs to survive another day. "Use it for good or bad, I can't tell. But I don't care, cause if I get my pay I can open up and eat another day." Morshu knows that not everyone he sells to is as kindhearted as Link, he has the blood of countless innocents on his hand, but at the same time, his wares aided a hero, he doesn't know which way the scales tip, did he do more bad than good? Or is helping Link enough to offset the amount of bad his ware have inflicted upon the world? In the end, Morshu cares not for morals, if he was told that stopping sales would save millions, it's likely that he'll open up and continue business as usual, because to him, not opening his shop and not making a profit are things that he cannot even imagine doing, his life depends on his shop, and it's clear that this attachment has corrupted him into what we see now. "Gotta make money and never look back. Ride on the train and keep it on track. If I fall behind I just pick up the slack." This is his life, his endless journey, no matter what he wants, no matter what he desires, he GOTTA make money, he needs to do it or else he is no longer this persona that he built for himself, the p ersona that has become like a demon, hungering for power and wealth. "I got dealt a bad hand but it's not a bad pack." He knows that his early life could have been better, hell, if it had been better, would he be in this purgatory of his own making? It's likely that the answer is no, but Morshu doesn't condemn God, Ganon, Link, or really even fate itself, he knows that life itself isn't bad, just that he was simply...unlucky. "I can't have debtors [...]" This line is interesting, because he uses "Can't" rather than "Don't", why can't he have debtors? Money. By giving wares to Link with an agreement of later payment, Link becomes a debtor, and Morshu becomes a creditor, but he rejects this idea outright, he can't have debtors because between handing out the goods and getting the payment, there's an amount of time in which he's technically lost money, and this dark, twisted demon inside of him will tear him apart at the seams for such a thing, this brings us back to how he'd sink his boat if he can't make money, bringing an end to his own life in the case that he begins hemorrhaging his 'hard-earned' rupees. Of course, a logical person would explain that he doesn't lose the rupees when he becomes a creditor, but don't forget that Morshu's psyche is heavily deranged at this point, teetering on the brink of self-inflicted harm, and death. "The system's fine as long as I head it" As long as Morshu keeps things going, everything's 'fine', not great, not bad, just fine. Deep down, Morshu is a simple man, he just wants to survive another day, to live and experience life without the crushing weight of morality, fear, profiteering, and other worries, but he can't simply ignore them now, he has to keep everything in check, as long as he heads the 'system' of his shop, his life will go on. This also lets us know just how disconnected from humanity Morshu is, he cannot and will not ever trust anyone else to handle things for him, it's a one-man show through and through, to change that is to die, in his eyes. "Don't lecture me on scripture - I've read it. To loan is to lose - Quote me, I've said it" In his many years, there have been plenty of people who have attempted to lecture this greedy, horrible merchant of a man, to try and make him see reason, his wares and wealth could save entire kingdoms, but he chooses not to. And their attempts to sway his mind have caused him to go out of his way to read their religious textbooks, their moral guides. As we stated earlier, this demon of his cares not for petty morals, he read the scripture, and it didn't even stir a single emotion within his dead heart, he knows every word within the texts, but it only reaffirmed his beliefs. Morshu also knows that his statement is strange, hence why he tells Link to quote him if he wants, Morshu would never, ever loan a single rupee, because again, this temporary loss of wealth would ultimate lead to him losing his life, but to any other merchant, this likely seems like gibberish. "Rubies [...] They are my life" Once again, Morshu confirms that, without his precious rupees, his life simply ceases, this is almost a cry for help from a man who is losing himself to unrestrained greed, but it simply falls on deaf ears as everyone considers it the ramblings of a filthy, amoral merchant. "It's nice to be rich [...] As long as you have enough, it's okay." The wording here is vague, enough for what, exactly? That's extremely subjective, a billionaire would not consider 200-million dollars enough, but a homeless person would consider a simple five-hundred dollar note to be a miracle. This is showing Morshu's darker side of himself, this darker side muddies the waters, trying to deceive the person on the other side of the dialogue, telling them that it's fine if they are considerably poorer after dealing with him, because they have 'enough'. "I can't get a fresh start" Morshu knows that this is his life now, nothing he can do will change this. Even if he somehow rids himself of his demons, he is old, his reputation is set in stone, and he knows nothing else besides peddling of wares, even if he were freed, he would willingly walk back into his cage of torment, this is his life now, and the only escape, well... "Night and day are the same to me. To have good sleep is a rarity." He runs his shop in his every waking moment, and the few times he manages to lie down on his bed, he is haunted by nightmares, visions of what would happen should he take too long a break, how can a man rest knowing that every passing moment brings him closer to a grim fate? He either gets up and re-opens his shop, or he simply slips in and out of sleep, haunted by nightmares that make a good night's sleep something to celebrate. "Come back, I need a customer to count on. A reliable person I can amount from." Both Morshu and his damaged psyche speak in turn, Morshu has no friends, acquaintances, or family, he only has customers, yet despite this, he asks that Link comes back in an effort to try and make a friend, someone he can count on to help him out of this self-made hell he is trapped inside. But immediately afterwards, his inner greed twists and corrupts this desire for friendship by making it appear as though it's more of an interest in a reliable source of income, a cash cow that will generate endless revenue for his store and unquenchable thirst for rupees. "I balance the books, but it's often no fable. It's a horror story, and then I feel unstable." Morshu describes his day-to-day work, balancing the books is complicated, it's clearly not an easy thing to do, but to him? To him it's a horror story, because at the end of the day, if it turns out he hadn't made a profit...We know what happens then, and so does he, his fear grips him, the once-talented merchant cowering in his office as he goes over every single rupee, he becomes unhinged, sobbing, crying, and cowering at the possibility that...this is the night in which the demon inside does not receive its offering of wealth. "If I dip into the red I'll pack up, cause it's over." Again, to him, losing rupees is a death sentence, so he may as well close up shop and prepare for his demise. "I feel like every day I find a four leafed clover cause I always find a way to turn a profit on my wares." Morshu doesn't fully grasp his own talents, the fact that he can turn a consistent profit every single day makes him feel lucky, lucky to be rich AND lucky to be alive, he always finds a way to turn a sour deal into a good one, and each time he does, he breathes a sigh of relief, knowing that his torment will at least ease up, if only for that one day. "Too good to be true, but then again who cares?" At the end, Morshu asks a simple question: "Who cares?" This is both a way for him to give up on maintaining this status quo as well as a way for him to call out for help, he knows no one cares about the infamous merchant, the inhuman profiteer, the dealer of death. No one cares whether he turns a profit or not, and sometimes, when all is said and done, he doesn't care, either, he welcomes the dread that comes when he's balancing the books, perhaps he even gets a twisted rush from knowing that this night could be the night where it all ends. All in all, Morshu is a deeply-troubled soul who, at first, seeks salvation, explaining their situation and even almost begging Link, the hero, to come back and lend his aid, after all, Morshu is just as in need of saving as any other victim. But, as time progresses, these thoughts of being saved erode away into nothing, and all that's left is the attitude of "Who cares?" where the dealer of death becomes so hopeless that he sometimes looks forward to his death. This is an incredible piece of poetry, I hope you can find more time to share such tales with us in the future.

Nice one man, absolute masterpiece of analysis. You hit the nail on the head with a lot of the emotions and ideas I was trying to convey, and even brought some different interpretations that I myself hadn't considered, but are equally if not more valid in context!

I'm gonna be working on doing a morshu remix of MF DOOM - Accordion, which is a prime example of a lyrical masterwork. Hopefully I'll get it done this year

@@burnt_lamp DUDE I fucking LOVE that song, it's been in my playlist for so many years now + The orchestra remix, I'm extremely pumped to hear this, can't wait to hear what you cook up after this absolute banger of a song. Also I'm pleasantly surprised that I managed to get the emotions you were trying to convey, at one point during my writing I believed I was looking a bit too deeply into it, but my gut told me I was on the right track, so I kept going, amazing video, dude.
