I have no idea what controversy you're talking about, but no it isn't. Not in any way. (Edit: Oh, I understand now.) When I think of "Woke" (which is always in a negative context,) I think of making a very important character look like a weakling to prop up another. Or making a *point* about "girl power." Or forcing things to be analogues of racism, or sexism, any type of bigotry. MK has *always* respected everyone equally. With Kung Jin in MKX they just give a nudge that he's gay. It's not a giant plot point, nah dude's gay. And a *God* tells him that it's not bad. We see why there's unjust hatred, we see each side equally. And the game does an absolutely fantastic job at *obliterating* it. Baraka and Syzoth have become two of the most beloved characters of the series. Everyone liked Reptile, but he wasn't a *character.* Now? I feel that calling Syzoth anything but his name is akin to an actual slur. But he *never* actually says "Don't call me that." In fact, everyone in-game just calls him by name. There are no "girl power" moments in this game at all. Absolutely none. Which is what makes a character like Sindel so good. She's flawed, very flawed. But she's also good at her core, and her "girl power" moment is literally her fighting *herself.* Which in reality is NRS apologizing to us lol. That is fan service done right. They took two of her most hated moments, and then gave us control of the new Sindel. And I *love* it. This game didn't make analogues for racism. Nah, they gave us real racism. They *showed* us xenophobia and bigotry. We saw how the Tarkat victims are treated. And we are told directly of Syzoth's plight. Despite him being a "bad guy" for a little bit (keeping everyone in the cell,) he's doing it for the right reasons, and Baraka himself assures Syzoth of that when he begins apologizing.
