+DragonStar Nah, I'm 26, I been playing the game since I was 3 years old in the arcades. My pops bought it for Genesis when it came out on consoles the next year. It was the month after I turned 4. It wasn't for me, he got it for him, then I got into it and he didn't even trip over it. He bought the games for me before I turned 17. He didn't see a problem with it besides it was just a game and not reality. He understood the video game industry. Parents then thought video games were just for little kids. But in fact it could be for anybody including teenagers and young adults. Video game industry was very young back then.

GTA III almost almost in my hands back in the day, I was in middle school back then and I was over my friends house playing the game cuz he was 3 years older than me. I told my pops I wanted it for christmas. I almost got it, but after he found out what was in the game from my friends parents he took it back. I didn't get a GTA game til I was 14. San Andreas came out then. Back in the day, in the SNES & Genesis days, little children were playing Disney games, arcade games, & age appropriate games.
My dad had no problem with me playing this game. "Mortal Kombat" was actually the game that he bought for me,along with my Sega Genesis in 1993 when I was 9 years old for Christmas.
I like how parents blame violent video games on some of the stuff that kids do but they don't think twice about letting their kids watch R rated movies.
Everyone knows about how many school shootings Saving Private Ryan started like Cod Waw (you see kids, it's funny because school shootings have nothing to do with this)
"Kids might get into fights and do what they saw in the game." I remember the time when I was fighting a bully in recess and I turned into a fucking dragon and chomped the bully's entire torso off. Oh oh, what about that time when a rope dart magically came out of my hand and I stabbed the bully and pulled him over while saying, "Get over here!"
Kids aren't stupid, we knew that was FAKE!!!! I grew up watching a bald headed guy drink beer on a wrestling show and never drank a day in my life. Street Fighter, Power Rangers, etc got me into Martial Arts and made my life much better.

I like how the reporter who asked the guy about the goal, he said its just to fight. When she mentioned the fatalities, he said it is just something you do if you want to be brutal to your opponent. She immediately moved on to her own thing about how violent it is. Nice job.
Gojira Gigantis Nope. Mortal Kombat was what Tipher Gore (I don't what her stupid-ass first name is) was to music. MK started the rating system for video-games. Or, in the least, it brought it to its attention for it to happen.

I'm amazed how peacefully the guy playing reacts to the reporter questions... normally if you are in the heat of a versus game you get really annoyed at any kind of interrumption.
I was like 5 when I first remember hearing about this game from the news. My older sisters and parents were talking about it. I don't remember if we already had it or what but I just remember us sitting around playing it, talking about the violence and how real it looked and yet it wasn't a big deal. I wasn't affected by it and my parents didn't feel the need to monitor us or take it away, my dad even used to play with us. I could see how people got their panties in a bunch over it but in the end it was basically harmless. Kids are exposed to worse stuff today and it's nothing. They may be a tad desensitized to violence in comparison but maybe that makes them better equipped to handle trauma.
Okay, I’ve been playing Mortal Kombat since 1994 when I was 6 and I didn’t turn out to be a serial killer! If you teach your kids the difference between fantasy and reality then you won’t have a problem.

I gotta say, with how nasty some of the Fatalities in the newer Mortal Kombat games can get, it's crazy to think that Sub-Zero's Fatality from the first Mortal Kombat is what caused all this hullabaloo back then
I'm with your dad: I also played it when I was a kid, and now I wouldn't let my kids play it, and even if I did my wife wouldn't. I played it as a kid, your dad played it as a kid, but the point is we shouldn't have.
My father who is a conservative Christian is 62 right now, and he loved MK back in the 90’s, playing MK Trilogy with my older brothers. He also loved playing the old James Bond games.
The whole time she's only interested about the fatalities so they can further their cause, he tries to explain the overall idea of the game but she only cares about fatalities watch her after he explains fatalities she got what she needed, she also misses the fatality when he does it
Playing Surgeon Simulator doesn't make me want to become a doctor. Playing Minecraft doesn't make me want to go cut down trees. Playing Madden doesn't make me want to play football. Playing Phoenix Wright doesn't make me want to become a lawyer. Why would playing a violent video game make me want to become a murderer?

They’ll make a big deal on violent video games like Mortal Kombat that is far from realistic, but they ignore violent movies with real actors in it, by the way I don’t have anything against violent movies, they’re all for entertainment.
I remember when i was playing MortalKombat Trilogy on a PC when I was in school in my sophomore year. It was free time. I was playing the game, and in the process of playing it, the "assistant" teacher came by and yelled at me for playing it, like I was some sort of psychopath. I simply responded with, "It's fake." She said nothing after that. But thinking about it now made me mad.
@LawlessLaw Nintendo wanted to avoid any controversy, hence why they cut the gore out. Because of the Blood Cheat, the Sega Verson, though inferior in graphics and sound effects when compared to the SNES verson, outsold the Nintendo Verson, it still agrivates me that a misunderstanding led to Nintendo's decision to censor MK's blood and change some of the fatalities, if you want a near arcade perfect port of MK 1, the Sega CD verson's the most intact, except for long load times
So, it's all right to have somebody rip a person's heart out in Indiana Jones Temple of Doom, which came out before this game, but when Kano does it (bearing in mind that you have to know the move) the game should be banned?

yeah I was totally playing man. I did watch it and even after all of my gaming of the Resident Evil series, Silent Hill, Fatal Frame and much more, I was still pretty blown away by how crazy violent MK9 is. I think I'll pick it up though as a celebration to all of my past years of MK gaming. ;)
The game was not intended for kids. Because at the time we, Americans as a whole, felt that the most violent game would come from JApan, we jsut sat back, and the game didn't from Japan, it was US made.
@snakes3425 Strange, Nintendo censors MK, DOOM, and Wolfenstein 3D. But, they don't censor Conker's Bad Fur Day. Which is more vulgar than those games put together.
Aaahhh, so Carol Lin made this seem like the arcade is like a movie theater where the product is shown off first, then the product is later released on various formats for home viewing (or playing).
Well now, it's funny to see how evolved the industry is. And by evolved, I mean the game's industry - Fox is still stuck in the past, broadly labeling all video games as a source of violence. I love how they say that the technology used for games "makes it seem real." Man, 1993 would flip if they saw the kind of things video games do nowadays.
If someone says that games like Mortal Kombat are too violent and shouldn't be sold in stores or even be playable in arcades, I'd just wanna tell them "Shut the fuck up!" Video games are a great way for me to pass time and more importantly....Have fun. When I was a kid, my mom and some other adult relatives didn't like the idea of me or my siblings playing Mortal Kombat or even Street Fighter or Killer Instinct. My Dad and a few adult relatives didn't seem to have a problem with it though.
When I was younger I played this game and my parents didn't really care. Am I a cold blooded murderer? No. Did I try to rip out someone's head in a fight? No.
