I'm a grown man who still cares about how obsolete game systems compare to each other.. and I've enjoyed every second of it! No other generation will ever understand the prideful ownership we felt for these pioneering consoles along with that mystique of the strangely different capabilities hidden under the plastic of rival systems.
Axel Janes You are mixing things up, nobody mentioned the Genesis and everybody knows that it came before the SNES and it was made to compete with the NES.
@@franciscoandrada412 "Genesis and everybody knows that it came before the SNES and it was made to compete with the NES." This made the 16-bit era rivalry that much more special. Also, Genesis games were almost always $10 cheaper than SNES version.
The 32X version should have been better than it was... it would be interesting to see how close they could have gotten to the arcade with proper budget. When you look at great games like Virtua Fighter on the system, you have to imagine there was so much more potential with games like this.
You need good programmers who have experience with the hardware to get great results. Sega's hardware was being phased in and out so quick no one but a few developers ever figured it out good enough to make use of it to its full potential.
If the budget was large enough to allow the developers to start from scratch instead of having to use the Genesis port as a template, I'm sure MK2 could have been an almost arcade perfect conversion on the 32X. Virtua Fighter proved that the 32X was a very capable console.
@ronjon I agree, the 32x mk2 should have use arcade size characters and be an almost pixel perfect port. at least the 32x was powerful enough to do that
Well, they gave us a glimmer at what could've been done. With the 32 meg cart, they added in roughly 40 (mostly voices) specific arcade perfect sound effects that the Genesis (24 meg) was missing plus Goro's lair, the opening screens & all around better graphics with the correct arcade colors that the Genesis just couldn't do. I was disappointed that they didn't add in Sub-Zero's correct ice sounds, Reptile's correct acid & force ball sounds, Scorpion's correct spear sound & Kintaro's other sounds. It also would've been cool to see the SNES version use 32 megs instead of 24. I kinda hope that AT Games will release a Genesis/32x hybrid mini console with a bunch of 32x games pre-loaded, including MK2 & also that Nintendo can somehow get their version of MK2 on a future mini-SNES.
The colour palette for MK3 on the Mega Drive was much nearer to that of the arcade version so the console would definitely have been capable of doing the same with MK2. MK3 on the Mega Drive also had more digitized grunts, groans and scream sound effects than the SNES version so the console would have been capable of doing the same with MK2 as well. Probe were pretty lazy developers and MK2 on the Mega Drive suffered because of it.
What would be the point? There is a Sega Saturn and PS1 version of UMK3 which is a lot better then what a 32X version would have been. By the time MK3 and UMK3 came out the 32X was already a dead system. Developers moved on to the Saturn and PS1.
i definitely would've loved to see a few more titles on he 32x like super turbo , outrun. this had the potential to be an arcade monster, but sadly it died a quick death
I think the 32x version is awesome, is like the sega version and the super nintendo combined. It's really close to the arcade, because it fixes things like the graphics from sega (Especially in the character selection screen, adding more colors than green, red, blue, and pale yellow) adds more colors to the backgrounds and characters, adds the little details the genesis didn't have and still has that genesis music that i love. I think it could perfectly go back to back with the SNES version.
The 32X is the clear winner but as others have said had the potential to be even closer to the arcade than it was. All things considered, it is amazing the Genesis version looks as good as it does given the limited color palette.
They added (to the Genesis version) about 40 arcade perfect sound effects including the character names, but they still missed a good dozen or so very important ones (ice sound, spear, Reptile's acid & force ball, Kitana's fan, Jax's projectile & ground pound, growling trees in The Living Forest, Kintaro's roar & a few of Kahn's sayings & his laugh). SNES had all of those minus the arcade spear sound, but that version was missing a few of the screams & yells added in to the 32x. I really like both SNES & 32x versions
Not only should the 32X version be far better than it was (arcade perfect) but the Genesis should have been far better than it was as well. The 32X featured 2 Hitachi SH2 32-bit processors like the Saturn which had an almost arcade perfect feel too it. Not to mention the processors (both) in the 32X were quite a bit more powerful than what was found in an MK2 cab. The only thing the cab had on the 32X was RAM. However, that could have been mitigated with a bigger ROM size. As far as the Genesis version is concerned...here was another stupid example of hurting one port for another. I mean, at the very least it should have included every single voice sample in the cart.
I always felt the 32X version of MKII was the best home port of the game. The Genesis version was too bleak, the colors were dull and watered down, and it was missing most of the speech and sound FX. The SNES version looked too cartoon-y, and the sound and music was too compressed. The Saturn / PSX versions were glitchy, and the load times were obnoxious. The 32X, imo, took the best elements from the other home ports, and comprised them into a damn-near arcade perfect port. Of course, the soundtrack from the Genesis version stayed intact, but I DID always enjoy the Genesis' unique soundtrack.
@@gideonwaxfarb Agree although the DOS/Windows versions of pretty much every game that had a console counterpart were always better. NBA Live/ Jam/ NFL Blitz were all close to perfect on PC.
The 32X wins! I just played my 32X version again and it really is a great version of the game. Call me crazy but I love these classic versions of MK more than the hyper realistic and violent modern versions.
I wish you had done all the backgrounds and shown some of the intros on the 32X version, but its nice to finally put a lot of arguments to rest about the 32X version, they did some really nice improvements over the Mega Drive and Snes versions. it really is the best cartridge version of the game and most accurate to the arcade you can get without load times. Only thing missing is the noise of the trees in the living forest, I wish I knew why they left that out?
Yep, some people don't realize that the Snes version had stuff added to make it look more impressive like the red grates in the Dead Pool stage. That being said the Snes version is still a very good port but the 32X is where it's at.
Adonis Cnut I never noticed, Johnny Cage doesn't cross his arms...I was sure Baraka crossed his but maybe I'm thinking of the Saturn version. Edit: Baraka does perform his winning stance in its entirety. What frames are missing, just in game animations?
@@guitardosongs except the SNES has the character ending screens so it's a wash. Don't know why 32X left those out with 8 more megabits than SNES. Imagine if the SNES version used 32 megs
EDIT: Apparently there are a bunch of games that used the 32X audio hardware. Don't believe everything you read on the internet, even if it's written by someone who's tearing down and explaining all the hardware. They could be wrong, and then you start posting on RU-vid repeating their wrong information. Original (incorrect) post: It's almost a crime that not a single 32X game used the 32X's audio hardware. At all. Period. Not one game. Why? The console should've been so much more than it was.
If only there was a sega cd 32x version it would have the best of both worlds. The red book audio from the sega CD and the graphics from the 32x. It would be close to arcade perfect.
You would think that the 32x version could be better. It looks like they took the genesis version backgrounds and added some colors and the 32x looks like it just handled the characters and life bars. With technology that is supposed to be superior to the arcade counterpart, I would think they could have had larger sprites and graphics pretty much lifted right from the arcade, like the Saturn and Playstation had.
They just wanted to get something out quick that was better than the Genesis version. The visuals (mostly color) are certainly better & they added in almost all of Shao Kahn's speech (character names, etc) plus some yells & groans that put some life into the Genesis's dead atmosphere but left out some things the SNES version had. The intro screens added in also give it a more arcade flavor from the start. But yeah, if they had built it from the ground up on 32X, it would've been virtually arcade perfect except for the music quality. Could've been the best home version without debate, but it's still very solid. They used a 32 megabit cart compared to 24 megs for SNES & Genesis, so it makes you wonder why they didn't just use 32 megs for those systems in the 1st place. With how good the SNES version was, you almost wonder if that would've been the definitive home version with that much more memory used.
Apart from some things that would have been impossible to pull out, the 32X version is what the Genesis version should have been. It could have been much better, as Mortal Kombat 3 proves.
Wow, what a sucker i was! Can't believe i spent $150 on a 32X, plus the extra $50 (so like $400 in todays money!!!) for basically the same game as the Genesis , with the exception of a Pterodactyl flying in one of the backgrounds for the 32X version! Then 6 Months later im first inline picking up a $400 Saturn!!! Ugh IDIOT!!!... 4 Months after Saturn im picking up the Playstation Sep 9th!!! That made it all worth it!!! Thats $850 in 10 Months on game systems, not to mention all the damn games i bought for each of em!!! I need to go move back with my parents, fun times!!! lol ;)
Hello my friend ! Do you know if there is any difference playing a game of sega at super 32x versus playing it at sega mega drive / genesis ? I feel there is no difference for my eyes when I tried both (super 32x) vs (sega console) !!!! Thanks
So the Saturn version of KOF95 used a ROM cart (not the RAM cart that some games would use later on) that contained part of the game's data (character sprites I believe), while the CD contained the rest. That port was fairly decent IMO. I wonder if the 33X port could have could've been better had Sega done something similar with the Sega CD and 32X.
It's understandable for the Genesis version, obviously to save space on the cartridge's limited memory. But I'm pretty sure they could easily have added those frames back into the 32X version. Not sure why they didn't though.
@@BIGGIEDEVIL And never should have existed in the first place. Let's be honest, it was a waste of resources and attention that could have and should have been used to make the Saturn hardware and launch more successful, thereby not completely losing their market position forever.
Obviously the 32X version's better. Characters have more animation, there's more background detail, does retain the opening screens from the arcade, and more sound and voice effects. I'd say it would be comparable to the SNES version in being the best console port of MK2 during the 1990s in terms of retaining things from the arcade game.
The 32X wins by a longshot, the graphics are better (a very noticable one is the shadows, on Genesis they are just blobs while on 32X they are proper shadows, and the digitized actors look better). A other very noticable one is the sound (the music and sound effects are the same, but the 32X has the announcer clips, while the genesis lacks it)
It's night and day, the 32x is way supieror. It's a shame it wasn't taken more seriously and fully utilized by sega. They just scratched the surface of it's optimization capabilities for the genesis and tossed out like garbage. I hope there is a homebrew community out there still developing what should have been done long ago for the 32x
The 32 version I remember me and my brother playing due to the added sounds, but I don't remember him having a 32 attachment. So I'm wondering, was there ever a later version of MK2 that came on the Gen that was updated?
dinkaDPB I think the backgrounds are still drawn by the mega drive . The 32x does the characters. Not having to colour the sprites means the mega drive can dedicate more colour to the background though.
The 32x version could have been accomplished in the genesis, with better programmers.. Look how mk3 & umk3 on genesis..was such a way better product... With 90% of the right colors, And voice samples And animations
I think 32X could've been greater if games like MK2, Virtua Fighter were released on CD instead of cartridges. Without Saturn, 32X could've had longer life with a huge game library for sure. I never understood why release a 32bit upgrade for genesis having the saturn around the corner.
The 32x one have the crouching low punch, the Genesis one doesnt, just cause that, you cant do the expert juggling combos on Genesis, like in Arcade. But 32x does it.
BIMBOBOOP SNES version was the best 16-bit port, but 32X port was the closest to the arcade in terms of graphics and voice clips. You can't do the expert juggling tricks on Genesis, while on 32X you can since it has the crouching low punch
The Snes version have a glitch that stop the characters after a jump for some frames and unable them to crouch or punch for better combos, fast enough. Just performing a special move, inmediatly after the characters lands after a jump, the players can surpass that glitch. The big error is thinking that a game is better for better graphics or better sound. In my opinion, SNES and Genesis are bad programed. Dude, a FIGHTING GAME whit a bad programmed gameplay or lacking basic moves (the genesisi one) are obviously not good ports. Fightings games are about combos and perfect gameplay, mostly than cute graphics and stuff like that ; but it seems people believe the SNES or The Genesis are good ports , just cause they played them on their childhood. (I grow up playing the SNES version, and I always hated that the game cant handle the complete system of combos of the arcade)
The 32X version should have been way better than this. This could have been the perfect port. Arcade quality sound and graphics with no load time. Had to wait until PS2/PS3/X360 for this
I don't know if they ever fixed it, but on my 32x when you did kung lao's split in half fatality and just hit any button, it would freeze the game and you had to reboot it.
I must admit buying this when it first came out, mostly getting the 32x add on for this game I was quite disappointed. It's just a pasted over megadrive/Genesis version with a few extras, and still missing a ton of content. I even remember at the time magazines saying this was going to be an arcade perfect port of the game.
It certainly wasn't arcade perfect - but, I definitely feel that it was the best home port of the game (at least until the "Midway Arcade Treasures" / "MK Arcade Kollection" versions were released). The truth is, NO home version was arcade perfect. They all had missing elements and / or down-graded graphics, sounds, etc. Even the "Arcade Kollection" version that came out in 2011 had a couple of (very minor) bugs. But in terms of gameplay speed and sound/music, I honestly felt that the 32X version was fantastic.
Why did the 32x have so much better audio? I remember cart space being the issue on the Genesis version. As far as I know the 32x had the same size limitations. Maybe they rushed the Genesis version.
Genesis used a 24 megabit cart & 32X was 32 megs, which would explain all the perfect arcade sound effects & opening story screens added into the 32X game
obviously the 32x version is superior. adds more soundbytes than just a crusty "UGH!", and graphically, it looks closer to the arcade. just one minor nitpick i have is they still didn't give the character select and wasteland stage their proper bgms.
So they're both the same, but 32X has different colors, better animation and voice samples (announcer says the characters name, screams when uppercutted, sweeped...)?
They nailed it with the colors on this one. All they really had to do was give this arcade perfect music and sound to make it the best home version. SNES still beats this. But it's a solid version.
LOL the hardware developers dropped a dope ass dual proc system, that was clocking 22mhz (compared to a single 9mhz) - and the junior software developers had no idea wtf to do with it... HAHAHA That's like somebody suddenly dropping an F1 race car to a 17 year old kid that's pretty good with his Camaro at the drag strip - and not telling him what the car is actually designed for.
I can`t see any difference except that it is brighter and has more speech output, plus some additional background details. I can`t see better graphics or more animations. What are you talking about?!
32x is the same as the Genesis version. They ported the Genesis to the 32x. Of course they added some missing sound effects and corrected a few color issues. Not like they wrote the game specifically for the 32x, after all, why bother when nobody was going to buy it anyway.
32X version is closer to the arcade version than the Genesis version. BUT, It's still missing the dragons flying on Kombat Tomb stage, and on the Forest Stage the threes still not muttering that strange noises like the Arcade and SNES version. Probe Software was a piece of shit while converting Midway games. Poor Sega users in 90's.
watch a video of the arcade game (thru Kintaro & Kahn) by itself & then a video of the 32x by itself & you'll see (and hear) it's far from arcade perfect. Even with the additions to the Genesis version, it's still missing plenty. The SNES version has some things the 32X doesn't & vice versa. I go between those 2 versions & think they're very good, but they really aren't too close to being arcade perfect. I think if the SNES version (24 megabits) had used 32 megs like the 32x version, it would've been the definitive home version, but if the 32x version had been built from the ground up by Sculptured Software, it would've been virtually arcade perfect except for the music of course
