Recreation of Scorpion's iconic weapon (which was once a garden tool), as seen in the 'Mortal Kombat' film. Multiple screen captures were taken of the prop in order to produce the drawing(s) used here to construct a replica.

► • MORTAL KOMBAT Scorpion...
"Skill to do comes of doing; knowledge comes by eyes always open, and working hands; and there is no knowledge that is not power."
-Ralph Waldo Emerson, from the essay 'Old Age,' which is included in the collection 'Society and Solitude' (1870). A shortened version of this quotation was used in an opening screen seen in the 1995 game, 'Mortal Kombat 3'. The statement remains as relevant as ever.

Beautiful... The Craft and Art, the techniques, that elegantly simple foot vice on a stump. the way you carved this, flattened it, shaped it, the grip or "scales", the decorative design... It spoke to me. And then, there is the symbiosis. You made this seemingly rough yet profoundly refined tool for your mate who uses it to provide a home for growing plants... plants that can beautify and nourish. No words were spoken, but the images speak volumes. This is sublime humanistic activity on every level. I am THRILLED to see you posting again! Inspiring! THANK YOU!

3:39 I watched a video of an old Japanese work worker who worked sitting cross legged on the ground. Instead of doing what you have here, he placed his foot directly on the work piece. Ever since i saw that, i make sure to stretch so i can get my foot above my hip while sitting, and i use my foot to hold work down. its surprisingly comfortable once you get into a good position that doesn't put pressure on any nerves

@pocket83squared
@pocket83squared 3 года назад
That grammatical problem really did have me going back and forth. Expression can be paradoxical. In most cases, it reduces to being more about clarity, so one is just better off not puzzling over precise communication so much. I blame my background, and ALCOA. And my biology. And everything else. Contrasts, though? Maybe. More like a radical temperate-a centrist. The way Lye and Acid make a reasonably drinkable _hydrogen hydroxide,_ though a bit salty.

@@pocket83squared I must confess, I commented before googling. I know; shame on me. I had no knowledge at all of Mortal Kombat. On a more serious note, I was struck by your use of epoxy AND wood glue on the handle. Was that just a belt-and-suspenders thing? I've seen plenty of folks make knife hilts using epoxy, but I don't think I've ever seen someone use wood glue at the same time. Does it leave less of a seam?
@pocket83squared
@pocket83squared 3 года назад
@@Wordsnwood What? You're about arcade-aged. You really don't remember MK? It was big when I was a kid. As for the glue/epoxy thing, the answer is kind of obvious. Glue works best for wood→wood connections, and epoxy is better for wood→metal. It was just a case of using what's appropriate where. Sure, glue-ups are notably frustrating and intense (especially while being filmed), but the rush isn't usually an excuse to break the rule-as long as it's still possible to follow it. One thing, though: you do have to be mindful not to mix moisture with epoxy. My approach here was to use pressure to sort of 'squeeze out' the wood glue so as to not trap it behind epoxy. Thanks for stopping by.

@@pocket83squared Yup, arcade aged... Defender, Tempest, Dragon's Lair, Battlezone, Dig-Dug, Joust... ummm, many more. I think I leaned more to the space-ship type and less to the "person running around" type. If I could have all those quarters back! 😆

That's pretty much how I'd imagined it would go. There's a long-standing tradition like that, from _Super Mario Bros._ to _Resident Evil_ to _TMNT;_ whenever a popular intellectual property changes media lanes, something ends up lame or uncanny in the process. Smurfs ought remain cartoon. Cherry-picking, sure. But the intro here and the Kunai were both downright awesome. And in spite of the flak, I'll still maintain that _Aeon Flux_ was a great film.

The power of understanding why Super Soakers are so expensive? & having justification for owning devices designed by a NASA engineer?
@pocket83squared
@pocket83squared 3 года назад
The reason that piece of trivia has so little power is because it's incidental. In the Emersonian sense, "knowledge" is hard-earned; it's a sort of deep-down conceptual way in which one comes to understand. The process is a type of leverage that begins to liberate one as he moves in the direction of self-reliance. An invention is made no better by it having been designed by an authority. "NASA engineer" is just a marketing term, at which Emerson probably would've scoffed. Take this point from an anonymous nobody.

God, are you doing everything just slightly askew on purpose? its driving me nuts!
@pocket83squared
@pocket83squared 3 года назад
Straight, 90° angled shots lack depth and are difficult to focus. From the point-of-view of a viewer who might actually want to build the object of the video, they can be somewhat difficult to understand conceptually. Also consider, there's a camera in the way. Imagine the limitations of trying to light a close-up while this camera floats between the subject and the light source(s). Imagine where you can be to remain out of the way. While you're thinking about that, balance in some precision construction while attempting to operate the camera. All of this follows a designed choreography, of course-in order to develop a clear, concise, and hopefully interesting narrative. Next, take the footage and un-dock it, store it, edit it, arrange it, and add it to a mass media platform that will (maybe) return _some_ portion of your investment back to you. Note that this last part will be performed under the strain of continuous criticism. The thing that's askew here might be your expectations. Please don't (further) drive me nuts by imposing them upon me. There are plenty of 'stand-at-the-counter-and-talk-straight-into-the-camera' channels out there for you; this must not be one of them. And be sure to click their notification bells for more.
