Brick veneers are an interesting alternative to siding or traditional masonry.
Novabrik uses a patented mortarless, interlocking, overlapping brick siding product. It can be used in new residential or commercial construction or it can be used in a retrofit application to replace aluminum or vinyl siding on a house.
Because the bricks hang on the wall, there is no ledge or steel support needed.
Application
In new construction, the building is covered in home wrap. Water and Weather proofing membranes are used around doors and windows to make a tight seal. Furring strips are screwed into studs over the home wrap, secured with special screws every ten inches along the stud.
The bricks will be screwed into these furring strips to hold them in place.
For the starter course, a 1”X6” starter board is used at base of wall.
A special plastic channel is screwed into the starter board and the first course or row of bricks sits in this channel.
The first row is screwed into the furring strips on the studs. Then the next four courses of brick are stacked on top of this starter row.
Every four courses, bricks are pre-drilled and screwed into the furring strips with a Nova screw. Each Nova screw can hold up to 300 pounds of bricks securely in place, so security and quality of installation is assured.
Corner bricks
Special corner bricks are used to cover the transition points at the corners of the walls. These pieces are screwed into the studs with a five-inch screw for maximum hold. Each one is also held in place using construction adhesive.
Brick cutting
Bricks are cut using a diamond tipped masonry blade with either a chop or miter saw.

Brick of any kind is what is called a reservoir cladding, if you are using brick it had better have a weather barrier behind it. Water will soak into and penetrate any brick cladding. Look up Matt Risinger on RU-vid, he did a demonstration a couple of years ago on a brick house they were doing a gut remodel on and they had the back side of the brick exposed so you could see what happens when it gets wet. They sprayed the outside of the brick with a hose and in under a minute there was water running down the back side of the brick.

That old saying that there is nothing new in this world may not be entirely true but in this case it is. Back in Jacobean Britain (1603-1625) they were using a very similar produce to hide the unpopular wattle & stud walls of Tudor houses and make them look like "modern" Jacobean houses. If you know what to look for you can still spot them in English villages four hundred years later.

@@kshuf8426 I'll admit it does look nice, and certainly easy to install. But the setting issue assumed the wall will settle all at the same rate. Which they don't and when people think of their house settling most think downward force. But setting has many factors some being cracks, shifting and generally settling. This product in the long run will likely cause sagging floor beams which is a sign of foundation issues, unequal forces do to load imbalance, settling, shifting etc. The house would do dramatically better if it was build from stick phase for this siding rather than upgrade. I see door frames shifting pretty good from this product. I could go on and on, framing carpenter of 27 years building homes. Granted I am not a master mason but my circle have them in it and wouldn't recommend this product from some stated issues and some not stated. I don't want to sound like a dick here but you can use this if you want but I'd like to warm people of hazards they "may" face in the future. The red flag for this product for me that caused me to look no further was their is no long term study on it albeit new construction versus old construction. And as ashamed as I am of some in my field no two houses are built the same, even with the same architectural design plans. I've seen houses build with skimping on construction plans for one reason or another, none excusable. Before someone thinks I just want the business that would be further from the truth. Because this product would lower my bid on the job giving me more work/money with a faster turn over rate and no need for a mason on the job site past the concrete foundation and or basement. Just do your diligence and use your intelligence and pay attention to any red flags and research them. Take care.

Many issues with this. This is basically a rain screen wall. The furring strips WILL rot. The Tyvek seams are not taped and might not meet code in many jurisdictions. the base of the wall is poorly flashed. This system is not waterproof - water will get in behind the brick. To make this successful, the backup wall must be 100% waterproof with robust water management systems. This would have a very short lifespan in the northeast.

They shouldn't get wet behind a brick wall plus there is an air gap for ventilation.
@tsicby
@tsicby 3 года назад
The brick. And the drip pan at the bottom prevents water from pooling. Plus there's an air gap to allow the furring strips to dry out if they do get wet for whatever reason. The system is air permeable so it dries out quickly.

@CantOutRunADuck, the untreated furring strips aren't and issue since they provide an air gap for any water to easily drain and air to circulate and dry out the area.
@DL101ca
@DL101ca 3 года назад
@@jtltet where is this air circulation coming from ? They left no gaps for circulation to happen and moisture to escape. Condensation will occur and mold will flourish , it will be a race between wood and screws on what gives first.
@jtltet
@jtltet 3 года назад
@@DL101ca, air can easily get thru the gaps of each "brick" joint and the 3/4" air gap created by the furring strips allows air to circulate and dry any left behind moisture but most of the moisture than gets behind the "brick" will run down the house wrap and out the bottom. If the bricks were up tight against the house wrap and osb then you would definitely see a problem with water being trapped.
@Domcel
@Domcel 3 года назад
Lol" there is wrap on it so any moisture will drain right out" except for that absorbed by the wood strips holding the wood in place. These may be good for dry climates or indoor decorative look only. Let's see this survive 200 years in a Canadian climate.

Looks like a great system, functions just like siding, but I'm really not a fan of the corner pieces. That's where the illusion fails and you can see it's obviously not real brick.

I'll bet you could miter long and short interlocking pieces with construction cement to make a corner that looks more like the real thing. Making the rows align from side to side might be a bit tricky, though.

Are there any concerns about installing a heavy brick veneer on a building foundation designed for vinyl siding?
@ammo1033
@ammo1033 3 года назад
I would guess no problem with the foundation. More along the lines of extra load on the wood frame work. However one could bolt a metal angle iron to foundation for a brick ledge. This would hold most of the weight and be a non issue.

Shouldn't you be using silicone to the screw-holes on the bricks to isolate the holes permanently? I mean wouldn't the water go through it otherwise? Wouldn't the wood behind the bricks be damaged by moisture, thesame principle as for bathrooms? I mean, it is outdoors.

You still basically have Hardie board siding on your house it's just a different look and if it's anything like Hardie board real brick is only 10 to 15% higher well we do not go with real brick it would raise the value of your home and is more durable
