When my grandmother did her makeup, she would always smudge her mascara because she had tremors. So when she passed, the person who did her makeup must have smudged it on accident. It was very comforting to see.

Exactly, I couldn't agree more. My aunt passed and when I went to the viewing she had her hair parted on the side. Parted was not the word, It was a comb over.( For those that don't know, it's a style mostly used by balding men to hide a balding spot. Men try to hide the balding, by taking the hair from the non-balding side and 'combing it over' to the other side, hopefully hiding the bald spot). It was attrouscious (sorry for the spelling) and it took away from the bereavement process and prolonged the closure of her being gone. I couldn't help but think why did her sons let her get buried looking like a totally different person. Everytime I thought of her, that comb over came back to my mind and intertwined with the good memories of her. Please don't let your loved ones be buried looking different than what they looked like in real life. thank you. and, sorry for long comment.

When my dad passed. The makeup person did a great job. But the best thing was they put a closed lip smile on Daddy's face. My brother and I saw him at the viewing and my brother goes. Dad looks like he just told a dirty joke. Well that got me tickled and I was laughing and crying at the same time. People were staring but I didn't care. Funerals are for families and if I want to express my grief with laughter its ok

When my aunt died, my great aunt kept cracking jokes about how the funeral home director pronounced “diabetes” (my aunt died from complications due to diabetes) and of course, we laughed and cried and we got stares too but we always said this is what my aunt wanted. She never wanted us to cry and hurt, she always wanted us to laugh. So that’s what I say to you, your father would’ve wanted you to laugh instead of cry. ☺️

My dad worked at the mortuary that ended up embalming and doing his funeral. So we knew they’d do a good job. But we kids actually, for my dad’s funeral, decided we wanted to remember him how he was. My dad was a funny guy who would transport a lot of the bodies to the mortuary in body bags. Sometimes if we were visiting and rode with him, we would go through a drive-thru for lunch and he would ask what I wanted to order and turn around and say, “excuse me, sir? Would you care for some lunch?” Or something like that just to make us smile. He did love that job.

Caitlin experienced this too in her memoir. Her grandmother was embalmed in Hawaii, so she couldn't monitor the process. They gave her bright pink lips and heavy eyeshadow. Oh and their neighbouring viewing room lost electricity so the people next door started encroaching into theirs then tried to kick them out.

Why did you get emotional because it was on wrong side?
@andinarizkia
@andinarizkia 3 года назад
@@Cognitoman people want to go to viewing remembering the person as how they remember them when they're still alive. Little signatures like always combing the hair to one side became an endearing memory of the person, hence if it's done wrong, it can give an "unfamiliar" look to the person. People want to say goodbye to the person they know, not the person they don't know; this includes how they dress, how they do their makeups, what type of color they usually cater to, styling quirks (wearing a LOT of rings, parting hair, faux beauty marks, etc etc), because at the end of the day we know someone not just due to their faces, but also their personality and choices.

Oh, I loved this video so much!! It reminded me of a chapter from one of my favorite manga series, "The Embalmer", about a goth girl who was obsessed with the idea of dying because she thought being embalmed would allow her to be beautiful forever. She snuck into an open casket viewing, and was disgusted when she saw the deceased wasn't wearing any makeup and just looked "normal". The titular embalmer explained to her that his job wasn't to make corpses "beautiful'- it was to make them look like their loved ones remembered, using makeup to make them look au natural if they didn't wear makeup when they were alive, or even painting on wrinkles and discoloration because "To the family, even the faults are dear".

I'm really frustrated that these two women care so much. I wish I could have worked with them. So many people are NOT like them. I had to fight to be involved in the process of my son's death. My son had cuts on his face from the breathing equipment in ICU. The Care Center first made him completely tan face. My son was always pale due to his heart defects. We had them remove the makeup and make him look more pale, like normal. They never covered the cuts and I got judged from family members like it was MY fault. I wish more people would allow parents/family members to be involved in the death process. I would have been with my son through EVERYTHING if I would have been allowed. People in this line of work need to understand that we can't get these moments back. It's so upsetting.

I am so sorry for your terrible loss, and that your grief was compounded by what happened. It is the worst thing to lose a loved one, and more so, a child. I have not had that trauma in my life, but having been with beloved ones, during their final moments, and after, I know how difficult it is to have anything that went wrong keep playing in your head, which can seriously impede the journey through grief. I do not have anything that can help, but can only say my heart goes out to you and yours. (I basically tell my brain to STFU, when it wants to replay the negative crap it plays around a death, and make it focus toward the full and best life I shared with the beloved. My grandma was 79 when she was hit & killed instantly by a car while crossing the street to check her mail (she was 79, but still drove, went shopping, went to church, etc. on her own whenever we weren’t around) in Feb. 2015. At her funeral, they had to reconstruct her arms & torso area under her clothes because all of those bones were severely broken. My grandma was 5 feet, maybe 80-90 pounds & she was struck at about 65-70 mph. So her body flew over a 100 ft. It still hurts so much to think about it & that someone so full of life would have to go out that way. Her face had so much makeup on it to cover the bruising and everything from being hit. She looked beautiful & like a movie star, but my grandma never wore makeup other than lipstick so seeing her with foundation on was different, but I'm very grateful to be able to remember her looking like a movie star. The only thing I regret is I was in cosmetology school during this time & my grandma had been waiting for me to get out of the classroom part to the floor to start taking clients. She was so excited to be my first perm. I never got a chance to give her that perm. Sometimes I regret not offering to do her hair for the funeral. I'm so sorry Grandma. I miss you so much & I hope I get to give you that perm in heaven one day.

My mom never wore make up, and I remember laughing my ass off when I saw her with pink lipstick, blue eyeshadow and eye liner in the casket, right before the funeral. I had baby wipes in my bag, and wiped the whole thing off. People who were gathering at the chapel, thought I’ve lost my mind because I was laughing and crying, while wiping the make up of my moms face. I kept laughing throughout the funeral because I couldn’t get the images out of my mind. One of the things that made the funeral a little more bearable.

I usually don’t wear make-up much less have my fingernails painted. When the day comes, just cover up any old-age spots, any acne scarring I know I have, don’t overdo pink because I’m naturally pale, make sure my mouth and eyes are glued closed, dress me black, straighten my hair like Morticia Addams, then to finish it up, put my goddamn glasses on (I frequently end up sleeping with them on, might as well go under wearing them).

When my abuela passed, I think it really helped my mom with grieving to be involved with how my abuela's makeup looked. Speaking about "it's uncomfortable to lie on the embalming table"... I will always remember how at med school when we had to take part in a few forensic pathology dissections, after our last practical the pathologist said "I hope I'll never see any of you on my table. " It might sound creepy to an outsider, but to many of us it felt like your general "take care, stay safe" wish.

I dunno if it'd sound creepy to me if I heard it in the wild without your explanation. It "sounds" like a tradition, something people in a somewhat-strange group of people with similar training/experiences would say, if that makes sense. Sort of a "break a leg" in theatre sort of thing. I think I'd pick up the meaning pretty quick.

I was an ICU nurse for 12 years in a public hospital, one of the charge nurses for 10 of those years. A nursing preceptor I had become good friends with worked there, too, and always told her group as they left on their last day not to be her patient. It made me chuckle a little the first time I heard it since I seemed to have gotten all the morose and sombre preceptors where I went to school. I also wish she had given me the same blessing as I did end up her patient there. Anyway, it is definitely a "take care, stay safe" kinda thing.

I love these videos . The embalming one helped me understand how they brought color back to my Mom. I went to see her right after bc she’d passed suddenly and been to the medical examiner’s office for autopsy. I was terrified of how she would look. But she was all pinked up - freshly washed hair- neatly trimmed nails and covered in a velvet blanket . Mind you - they had 10 min heads up to my visit and the accommodated me . They gave me time alone downstairs with my Mom looking like herself . They made her look natural for the viewing with her own makeup- but seeing her after embalming looked even more her . I’m forever grateful for the care and respect they showed her . Seeing her hair wet one final time and smelling the sweet shampoo .. They went the extra mile . I figured they’d just style her hair as is - but they rehydrated it and it looked so shiny and freshly blown out . The funeral director even reapplied her favorite lipgloss during the visitation. Details matter . TY for doing what y’all do 💗

My husband's good friend passed from an overdose. She was very young and it was such a sad funeral. Unfortunately, the mortician who did her makeup either didn't listen or the family chose an old picture of her and her makeup was NOTHING like her usual routine. A lot of her close friends were very distraught over it because she didn't seem herself. :( I am glad to see that there are people like Caitlin and Monica in the world who make it so important to be involved. It prevents so much unnecessary sadness!! Watching Caitlin's videos actually makes me happy because it's obvious they are trying to make funerals more open casket than closed. I have been very, very fortunate that all of my family passing has been open but I am stunned at how uncommon it is in my friend circle. Thank you Caitlin (and Monica!) for taking the time to talk about death and bringing normalcy to it. ....I do feel like I should start wearing more makeup now for the sake of my friends and family! 😅

I lost my mother to a tragic car accident 8 months ago. (1 week before Christmas) Your videos have truly helped me to understand the post mortem part of it and I’m grateful for that. My mother was not embalmed when I saw her body. She was cremated after we had our chance to see her. I’ve had so many questions about what I saw and what happened to her body which is how I found you. These types of videos make me want to do this as a profession. Losing her makes me want to understand everything that happens after we die. Weird, I’m sure. But I’m grateful for you.

Thank you so much for sharing this info. My granddad's mouth had a stretched expression that looked like a weird smile, and his skin was orange. We were left thinking this was the work of a dodgy mortician, who had maybe sewn the mouth together funny in an attempt to hide ageing or distress - and had maybe applied foundation in too dark a shade. To realise now that these were more likely natural effects of dying, and more so an absence of rejuvenating techniques rather than a botched job, is really really comforting.

I agree about how important makeup artistry is with the deceased. When my Mom died in 2009, the funeral home did such a wonderful job on her I was shocked. She not only didn't look dead, but she looked beautiful and that wasn't a word that I had ever thought to describe her previously. The last time I saw her in full makeup was probably when I was in Jr. High in the mid 70's. But now my last memory of her was seeing her at her viewing and she was beautiful. I am still in awe on the work they did on her. Kudo's to Mulkey Mason in Denton, Texas for an absolute A+++ job.

My Dad passed at the end of November and it was the first time I’d witnessed the process of death through to viewing the body. I expected it to be a bit weird, which it obviously was, but they did such a good job. They styled his hair somewhat like Dracula which made me laugh and he also looked strangely like his best friend which was also hilarious. It’s a strange thing to process but content like this opens it up to people who haven’t gone through it yet, so thank you.
