Dave is like Jordan when it comes to comedians. I’m not surprised at all. Nore cuts EVERYONE off but there are a handful of people that he knows better. Check the Lyor interview
Don't get it twisted. A lot of these so called gangsters are not ...If you think Philly slippin you crazy.... Tariq Trotter can spit with any of them ...them things in deck too .. Philly stand up...
@@swirvithanlgoodlingsplatt8221 few people can be mentioned with those 3, with those characteristics, Rakim, Kool G Rap, Big Daddy Kane, KRS1, MF DOOM, Plug 1 and J-Live. Not many more.
The change happened when the oligarchy took over radio and former music video channels like MTV and BET. I didn't include VH1, because they played soft rock until they switched to reality TV and old '90s sitcom syndication.
Yea but the people Kanye be talking about didn't want black children to grow up on positive, intelligent and self affirming hip hop. Can you imagine what society would look like if backpack rap had beat out gangster rap? There'd be no drill culture, Yea there would still be gangs but it wouldn't be so glamorized.
@@metaLungiez true!!! We need to start a crusade to bring backpack 🎒 rap back. This murder rap is destroy us from foundation to our very core these days!
There's nothing wrong with backpack music, the problem is they don't play it on main stream radio and platforms because it gives people food for growth. And they want to keep the people dumb, deaf and insane.
The problem here is wanting to see this authoritarian "they" (whoever this boogieman even is) as an evil entity, and the listener as an innocent victim that doesn't know any better The truth is, people are simply more interested in the ignorance. People don't like being preached to or being challenged. The ignorance is easy to digest. This also comes from issues with authority. People LOVE to blame everything on the higher ups ("they") and see themselves as victims Maybe the truth is somewhere in the middle. But if you really feel this way, you gotta hold the adult listeners accountable too.
@@ShardTown bruh get out. Social engineering exists, has existed, and has been admitted to by government agencies (and media conglomerates) for decades. Nobody is immune to propaganda, and that's all the hell they feed us. Stop tryna give institutions passes and regurgitating their tired "y'all are suffering bc y'all don't do better" talking points. You can do better.
Looking at that source mag cover with mos, black thought, and pharaohe monch gave me chills. Before my time but I wish I could have been alive in that era of hip hop
Chappelle is not lying. I went to a Biggie show in Chicago at the Navy Pier in 1996 and still to this day think about allllll them fine ass women that attend that concert...and I mean FIIIIINE!!!
Jay Z separated it actually. As a backpacker, Jay Z was our devil, because all he talked about was "money, cash, hoz." We accepted Biggie, though, so Mos Def is correct.
@@seankiesling2054 Yup, them too... the backpacker scene began bubbling, probably around '91-92 when you had the Def Squad/Hit Squad rappers taking over the East Coast hip hop scene in the underground... and the Native Tongues Family with their conscious lyrics and alternative approach... then it got a shot in the arm on the West Coast with Heiroglyphics in '93 when Souls of Mischief released their seminal debut, '93 Til infinity. That crew also reinvigorated battle culture... as a huge hip hop head, I was always battling in high school, in homeroom, in the cafeteria, on the school bus, at house parties, etc.. but when Heiro came out, it expanded and more people got involved. In '94, Nas dropped the New Testament in the backpacker Bible, Illmatic... I would also include DITC (Diggin' In The Crates), BCC (Boot Camp Clique), Gang Starr, The Roots, Freestyle Fellowship, Hobo Junction, Aceyalone and The Good Life Cafe artists, Common, etc. The tension with the overly commercial artists didn't really come to a head until around the late '90s when mainstream rap got really glossy and jiggy... that's where you had Puffy, Mase, Jigga, Cam, etc... then you had indie labels like Definitive Jux and Rawkus poppin up as an alternative, which produced the likes of Company Flow, Talib Kweli, and Mos Def. Company Flow's Funcrusher Plus album was another milestone in the backpacker subgenre. It hit the underground hard in '97 and recalled the raw, gritty sounds of Enter the Wu Tang and Enta Da Stage from '93. By the '00s, the South and commercial rap had taken over and the backpacker aesthetic and sound became completely relegated to the underground and indie labels.
@K G Well said. I was alive and as an avid fan of Hip-Hop this is exactly how I would describe the timeline of events. Mid late 90s into early 2000s is when the bubbly commercial shit took over.
Just too be in that room.. Blackstar will always be in my favorite top 3 and Chappelles my favorite living comedian… just legends! Plus from Philly so roots all day! 🙌🙌🙌
I was on the east at the time Boot Camp and black moon with Buck did it first. Annnd even then they was street and gansta af with the deceptacons. So imma side with Chappele cause today when ever i go to a hiphop show all the so called east coast gangsta acts are loked at as back back today. I promise u. Capome n Nore are looked as backpack today. Not back then but today they are.
The first time I saw that Roots video was on American Rap Makers, an Atlanta video show hosted by Arnell Starr. He played the Biggie video then immediately played What They Do video and it was like a point for point breakdown. It was a very important video/song.
I disagree....plenty of gangster rappers had some sort of awareness record on their albums. No matter who you name, it wasn't all just shoot em up, bang, bang, kill a nicca music.
@@jman1562001 since you disagree, the burden of proof is on you. It doesn’t look bright as gang culture still permeates. gangsta rappers knew what they were doing as they were more concerned with making money than bringing awareness, hence the shoot’em up bang bang in abundance. They didn’t change the message on purpose, didn’t wanna mess up their bag.
I want to make content like yours, seeing you out here really doing it! I'm not trying to take your hustle or knock you I just want advice bro! like I have my own edge and my own angle to music but I admire you and the content you put out bro just hit me up whenever I want to put all good content related to hip Hop but also jazz and some other classical stuff that I be into
