Most musical numbers accompany a plot moment, or establish a setting or flesh out a character. Something of some significance to the story. This one? This is just "Man, diction lessons are boring, LET'S DANCE INSTEAD." :D

What a great movie that was, still is! I suppose the nostalgia of being the age I was, in the place I was, is part of the charm. If they tried to make a movie like this now, I'd probably hate it. Not only have the movies changed, so have I. But when I watch this, I'm seventeen, again.

This dance routine clearly demonstrates the talent of both these men. They could dance, sing, act and play a musical instrument. Raw talent that is quite unique these days, but was for the most part, something each actor had to bring to the table back in the day. The steps (all choreography by Gene kelly), was perfectly in sync. Great routine, great dancers!
@Erictheeviltwin

I love everything about this decade of music and film; the glitz, the glamor, the dancing, the romanticism... You just don't get stars like them anymore.They could sing, they could dance, they could act. This movie began my love for the Hollywood greats, and it's these timeless stars that inspire so many. Gene Kelly was an amazing perfectionist, and the two, irreplaceable icons whose screen appearances continue to inspire people.

I remember my elementary school music teacher, Mr. Duckwall playing this and singing in the rain for us. I was probably 7 or 8, wow. He was the one of the coolest teachers I had and he had a great impact on me. Brings back lots of memories

Everybody talks about how fantastic O'Conner and Kelly are, and they really are fantastic, but if you watch Bobby Watson (the guy playing the diction coach) you realize something. It might look like he's just being pushed around, but he's dancing just as much as the other two are. And he does it without making it look like he's dancing.
@huetuber1204
@huetuber1204 10 лет назад
No, he isn't. Apart from keeping up with Gene's footing when he was being dragged from the curtains, his footwork doesn't indicate any "dancing" at all. Moving around to keep up with Gene and Donald's rhythm doesn't necessarily mean he himself is dancing.

My favourite tap routine of all time!!! This movie was the reason i became a tap dancer. And the two actors/dancers/singers have completely different styles in their dancing. Donald O'Connor is just so amazing to watch because he is so entertaining (just like in Make em Laugh) and Gene Kelly is jost so flowy in his movements just doing the routine with such ease and no effort at all...and that my friends is what makes this routine great!!!

no, they sure don't make 'em l ike this anymore. Watch the synchronization between Kelly and O'Connor, particularly when dancing on the desk. Letter perfect dancing! Two of the three greatest male dancers were right here! Astaire was the consummate artist of course, Kelly the consummate athlete, and O'Connor, the heir apparent to both! They made it look so easy, yet we have no idea how many hours of rehearsal it took to make it come out like this. There is no talent like this anymore, sadly.

Frank Sinatra said it best (although he was discussing Eleanor Powell and Fred Astaire): "You can sit around and wait, but you'll never see the likes of this again." Kelly and O'Connor used this number in the film to showcase each other's talents; Each contributed his own steps in the choreography and the other performed it. This is borne out if you watch some of their other movies. You can see the elements of style used here. Part of an amazing body of work from both of these men.

Apparently, this is the first scene they shot for the film, according to the documentary on the special edition DVD. It was also the only song written especially for the movie. On the second disc, there's a series of clips showing what early films all the other songs came from; my favorite being The Broadway Melody of 1936 with Eleanor Powell, Buddy Ebsen and his sister Vilma. Eleanor Powell. Is. Utterly. AMAZING!
