In the summer of 1941, two bolt action rifles went head to head, the German K98K vs the Soviet Mosin Nagant. Which is the better rifle? I've wasted several hours of my life to solve this question using facts and science. Hope you guys enjoy.

Thanks to everyone that commented and everyone that continues to comment on this video. I greatly appreciate all the feedback and the discussions generated from the video. Given all the feedback, I’m going to do a more in depth video looking at each rifle. Including a lot of the suggestions submitted by you guys. My hope is to do both of these rifles justice. Thanks again to everybody that commented and subscribed.

While the Mauser style action is clearly superior, the difference in performance between two functional bolt action rifles has virtually no impact on an armed conflict between conscript armies. The only country that adopted a rifle good enough to make a significant difference was the US with the M1 Garand.
@-Zevin-
@-Zevin- Месяц назад
1 big thing you are missing from this, and I don't of course disagree in principal about the m1 Garand, but it's always overlooked that the Soviets didn't have a standard issue semi auto battle rifle, because their focus was sub machine guns, they out produced even the USA in subguns, huge numbers of soviet troops didn't need semi auto battle rifles because their PPSH were more useful in urban warfare and in support of rapid tank assaults. This tactical change is why the AK-47 project was such a major priority. They were actually ahead of the USA in infantry tactics.

Technically, none of these rifles - Serbian, Spanish, Chilean, - are related to the one shown in the video. They're based on the 1893-95 pattern mauser, the ultimate development of which is the Swedish m/96. The K98 is based on the 1898 pattern which is slightly different (cock-on-open vs cock-on-close and some other differences as well). Mechanically it's the strongest, safest and most robust action. But I agree. The mausers in 7 or 6.5 mm are excellent rifles. And the round does more damage to your target than to your shoulder.

You're making a lot of assumptions about the use of the safety. Remember, the Soviet philosophy was "is gun, is not safe in first place." Under "ease of use," you also neglected field stripping the weapon and bolt disassembly, both of which are clear wins for the Mosin. And the sights... oof. I've got a lot of Mosins and Mausers, and 100% if the time if I want to be able to hit something, I'm taking a Mosin, because the sights are much better. You also didn't consider manufacturing factors- cost to manufacture a Mosin is significantly lower both in raw materials and money, but also in terms of man-hours. The factory tooling is also simpler, easier to set up, easier to operate, and easier to maintain.

I think if comparing a Finn M39 is the best comparison as the build quality is better than Russian examples. With that being said, this really is no contest there is a reason why the 98 action is the most copied action on earth for bolt guns. Its fast, smooth and reliable. These guns are capable of great feats of accuracy and in the 98k's case is a smaller and more handy rifle. 98k's strip feed is miles better, 7.92x57 can't rim lock unlike 7.62x54r, and has a better sling mounting system. As mentioned the safety is way better on the 98 and has a cycle but safe position at 12 o clock. Mosins due to their long barrels in good condition are capable of great feats of accuracy. The Mosin with a PU was a much better sniper's weapon than the k98k's ZF due to higher magnification and much shorter eye relief combined with a longer barrel. Mosins tend to operate better in the cold than 98k's. Overall winner is 98k by far. However Mosins did have their advantages, something the Finns made great use of during the Winter War. Mosin was a rifle made cheaply that got the job done, 98K was a high quality rifle that was more suited to hunting than the main rifle of the German army. Out of the WW2 bolt guns i own (I got at least one example of every major country's rifle) Type 99 is probably my favorite and i would argue is the best bolt gun overall with SMLE being close 2nd.

Leaves a lot to be desired ,,,, meanwhile the Mosin 91/30 has a fairly large and bold square notch rear sight , and an ample square top front post , that provides a MUCH better sight picture. When the Germans were 100 yards or further, the Russians would not be firing so fast that all they would hit is the sky. This is the same for the K98. Both sides would slow down and use well aimed fire. It was proven that the most prolific sniper in ww2 was using the Mosen and to make it even better the rifle he used most often was a standard iron sight mosen. Also, you failed to mention that the 7,62X54 cartridge in a mosen has considerable less felt recoil. I have shot both and the K98 chambered in the 8 mm is brutal to shoot, while the mosen chambered in 7.62x54R is a pleasure. Likewise, I am more accurate with the mosen. I am a very good shot, no brag, just fact. I was trained by the Air Force and the Company while serving in Vietnam. Later after rehab I joined the Sheriffs department and was selected as a sharpshooter on all 3 Sheriffs departments. It would be nice if someone would evaluate both rifles without prejudice.

Ingredients: 2 cups (260g) unbleached all-purpose flour 1 1/2 teaspoons instant ESPRESSO POWDER 1/2 teaspoon baking soda 14 tablespoons unsalted butter (1 ¾ sticks; 198g), divided and cut into 1 tablespoon pieces 1/2 cup (100g) granulated sugar 3/4 cup (150g) dark brown sugar 1 1/2 teaspoons kosher salt (Diamond Crystal) 2 teaspoons vanilla extract 1 large egg 1 large egg yolk 1/2 cup (87g) semi-sweet chocolate chips (like Guittard) 1/2 cup (80g) cark chocolate (70%) discs (can substitute chopped chocolate from a bar) 3/4 cup (87g) chopped, toasted walnuts or pecans (optional) Directions: Whisk together flour, baking soda, and espresso powder in a medium bowl and set aside. In a saucepan over medium-high heat, melt 1 stick of butter (8 tablespoons or115 g). Continue cooking until butter begins to brown. Swirl pan constantly until butter has foamed and takes on a dark golden brown color and smells nutty. Watch carefully, as it can quickly go from dark to burnt. Carefully pour browned butter into a large heat-proof bowl, scraping all the browned bits from the pan by using a heat-proof spatula. Immediately whisk the remaining butter pieces into the browned butter, until melted. Add sugars, salt, and vanilla to the bowl, and whisk to fully incorporate. Add egg and egg yolk and whisk until smooth with no lumps remaining, about 30 seconds. Let mixture stand for 2-3 minutes to let the sugars melt, then whisk for another 30 seconds. Repeat this rest-and-whisk process 3 times, total. Mixture should seem thickened, smooth, and shiny. Using a spatula, stir in dry ingredients until just combined (and a few flour streaks still remain). Stir in chocolate chips, discs, and nuts (if using) until evenly distributed and no flour pockets remain. Refrigerate dough for at least 2 hours, or overnight. Once dough has chilled, scoop into balls that are slightly bigger than a golf ball. (At this point, I put them on a quarter sheet tray in the freezer, once frozen solid, I transfer them to a resealable freezer bag, so I always have homemade dough at the ready!). Place cookies 2 inches apart on lined baking sheets (or a nonstick cookie sheet). Bake at 375 degrees for 10 to 14 minutes until cookies are golden brown and puffy in center, but edges are darker and fully set. Transfer cookie sheet to a rack to cool completely (or at least 10 minutes). NOTE: If baking from frozen, I let dough balls sit out for 20-30 mins while the oven preheats to 350 degrees and bake for 16 to 20 minutes. 123

Stir sugar mixture into flour mixture until just combined. Refrigerate dough until chilled, 30 minutes to 1 hour. (2.) Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). (3.) Scoop cookie dough using a cookie scoop or 1 tablespoon so all the cookies are uniform; shape dough into teardrop-shaped cookies. Flatten the pointed side of each cookie to form the 'face'. Arrangecookies on baking sheets. (4.) Bake in the preheated oven until golden, 10 to 12 minutes. Cool on the baking sheets for 10 minutes before removing to cool completely on a wire rack. (5.) Pulse pecans in a food processor until finely chopped; transfer to a bowl. (6.) Melt chocolate chips in the top of a double boiler over simmering water, stirring frequently and scraping down the sides with a rubber spatula to avoid scorching. (7.) Dip the top of each cookie in the melted chocolate, spreading to fully coat the 'body' of each hedgehog. Press cookies, chocolate-side down, into the ground pecans forming the 'fur'. Arrange cookies on a sheet of waxed paper to set, about 30 minutes. (8.) Transfer the remaining melted chocolate to a piping bag or plastic bag with a corner snipped. Pipe chocolate onto the pointed end of each cookie for eyes and a nose COOK'S NOTE: Pecans give the best coating because of the color variation. For a nut allergy, a mix of graham cracker crumbs and one or two chocolate wafer cookie crumbs (remove the cream filling) will give a close look.

My personal opinion. Apples to apples, the Mauser is clearly a better rifle. It’s faster, lighter, shorter, and more refined. But did this make that much of a difference in the hands of the average Joe who was drafted to fight with these rifles? Who knows, I’d say that comes more down to training. And once we start looking at the big picture for WWII, bolt action guns were obsolescent. Compare a Garand to either of these, or even the German’s own MP-40 and you can see that they are old world technology. Still fun to watch this video and compare the differences, and now I’m offended because I can’t afford a Mauser and you hurt my Mosin’s feelings.

Mix flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt in a bowl. Whisk sugar, shortening, corn syrup, eggs, and vanilla extract in a separate bowl. For a nut allergy, a mix of graham cracker crumbs and one or two chocolate wafer cookie crumbs (remove the cream filling) will give a close look.

the result is no suprise, K98 is better made rifle. But they are military rifles, and as military rifle, and much more than perfection, you need durability. Let's put it straight. On eastern front, were though winters, and K98 had big problems with its small construction tolerances. When temperatures were under freezing point, their K98 actions started to jam, mosin's dont. I am not saying that mosin is better rifle, but it's better military rifle and K98 is better target rifle.

🍪PERFECT CHOCOLATE CHIP COOKIES🍪 Espresso powder is the key! 123

Just because the standard issue battle rifles were handed out in the largest quantities doesn't mean that they were the most important factor of the war effort. That's like saying the Germans beat the Celts and conquered Germany because they clearly manufactored the superior spears. I mean - sure, it is nice for the guy on the front to have a slightly better weapon but in the end his job is not to defeat the enemy army by the might of his relatively puny weapon. His job is to mainly be there and obstruct the enemy. In WWII artillery, tanks and planes made the big impacts on the battlefield and in terms of strategy, it was a matter of production, ressources and - last but not least - numbers of men. The allies by FAR outnumbered the axis. And thus they had more men in the field and could produce more ammunition, guns, tanks and planes on top of that. If there had been 500 million Germans instead of 100, they could have pumped out way more costly semi-autos and autos too ... but probably the better move still would be to arm the frontline with bolt-actions and invest in planes, tanks and artillery.

The only really bad thing about the Mauser is the sight picture. The sights are just atrocious. The round is rather overpowered too. It doesn't have much to do with the topic of the video but I think it's worth mentioning. I don't understand why ze Germans went for this rifle in the first place. Unlike most other countries, they didn't have to deal with a bunch of old crap when they started the re-armament in 1933. They didn't have a large stockpile of old guns and ammo, they basically had nothing. They could've developed a semi-auto rifle just like the Soviets and the Americans did, with a different round, more suitable for it. It was already during WW1 somebody proposed an idea to reduce the infantry rifle caliber to 6mm with a fast, lightweight bullet - does it sound familiar? We messed around with a lot of different guns chasing camels from 38/40 Winchesters , 30/06 Springfield's, 8mm Mauser cavalry carbine ( horrible at both ends) to 70 calibre muzzleloading carbines and 45/70 rolling blocks. The Russian cartridge was the most effective in terms of having enough power to do the job and being light enough for plenty of follow up shots. It wasn't uncommon for us to run into thousands of camels at times. We didn't go anywhere on the station with less then 500 rounds of ammunition in the ute . Shooting from the ground , back of a ute or helicopter depending upon the circumstances. Was a lot of fun and informative. They are an amazing animal

Of course the K98K is superior and well-performed rifle than Mosin, the only reason why they lost because they picked the wrong time for the invasion. If only they chose to invade during winter-to-summer instead of summer-to-winter, the Germans would be able to overrun Moscow easily (the Germans were also capable handling the cold seasons too, but the Russians were already spent their life living in harsh winter more than anyone could done, from Odessa to the extreme and more isolated ones in Siberia. So, if their outdated firearms doesn't do the job let the mother nature deal the rest for the Red Army... Not even finest Hugo Boss dress would withstand those freezing sub-zero temperatures)

Fans of such videos are reminded that the war ended in Berlin. A Russian soldier with Mosin took the Reichstag. A German soldier with a k98 threw out a white flag. Mosin was created for war. k98 was created for the Einsatzgruppen.

Pretty sure by that point in the war Russian soldiers preferred SMGs. And no the K98 was also created for war.

The Red soldier most likely had a PPSh or other SMG. If a Mosin, more likely it was a shorter version. The Russians also issued captured Mausers & ammo.

Er, no. The Einsatzgruppen didn't exist in 1935 when the Kar98k was developed from the G98. Besides, the rifle had little to do with why the USSR won and the Germans lost. They both could have been using Mosin's and the Germans still would have lost.

Just look at the KD ratio on the eastern front, if Germany wasn’t fighting the whole world Russia would have been fucked.

If you look at the machine work on that Mosin it was definitely manufactured DURING the war. The machine work is trash. If you want a best quality Russian Mosin it will need to be made BEFORE the war and at the Tula factory. The BEST Mosins were made in Finland and had a custom 2 stage trigger.

Yeah mines a 1942 marked Mosin. A Finnish M39 is on my list and when I get my hands on one I would love to revisit this.

@@fanoffirearms No Doubt, hard to find. Doing the two stage trigger mod on your Mosin is pretty easy. Even though the Machine work is rough it's still a good rifle with a heavy duty machined actrion. Perfect for an upgrade project. I put a McGowen Barrel on mine, bent the bolt, did a glass bed, drilled and tapped the action for a scope and threw in a Timney trigger. It was a lotta fun and it's a serious tack driver. And listen, you got a great channel, great personality but do an old Marine Corps Vet a favor and go easy on the F-Bombs. I'd be a hypocrite if I didn't admit that I talk the same way but you got a good thing going representing the 2A community, right? Good luck Kid.

If you live in the US then the 91/30's you're looking at are all refurbs. They'll be a combination of pre-war and war-time Izhevsk and Tula components. The mark on the barrel shank is irrelevant by that point. Albeit pre-war Izhevsk were made to a higher standard of tolerance than Tula. Tula had issues with precision machining in the 1930s.
