Malaria is a serious disease caused by an infection with parasite transmitted to humans by a mosquito bites. The disease is common in tropical area especially in Asia, Africa and Latin America.
Symptoms of malaria are fever, chills, headache, vomiting, muscle aches, and fatigue. it can be mild or severe. Severe cases of malaria can lead to organ failure, seizure, coma, and death. The symptoms usually begin 1 to 2 weeks after the mosquito bite.
The diagnosis is simple by doing a blood test. The test can differentiate between several types of malaria’s parasites, and the treatment can vary depending on each type.
Prevention of malaria includes spraying insecticides to control mosquito population. Also using mosquito nets during sleep, applying insect repellent when you are outdoor, and taking medication to prevent infection. These medications should be started before the travel and to be continued till after the return. For the treatment we use a special antimalaria medications but unfortunately there is some drug resistance to some of them. The good news is that several vaccines are being developed and tested hoping they might eliminate the disease in the future.
