Mosquito Creek Lake: camping and pre-fishing for the BKFT kayak bass tournament

I took my Hobie Lynx way up to Mosquito Creek Lake in northeast Ohio to try to find a pattern for my upcoming tournament and to check out the rumors that there had been a grass removal effort since I was there last summer. Mosquito Creek Lake is one of the largest lakes in Ohio, and with a wide range of fishing options, it is one of my favorite lakes from last year's Buckeye Kayak Fishing Trail's schedule. I spent one day on the lake in May of last year, and I felt like I only touched about 1% of the water, so this time I took a whole weekend to go up a few weeks early and learn the lake a little. It was a great weekend!
My buddy, Kevin, joined me, we camped at Mosquito Creek State Park, and spent 23 hours over the weekend out on the lake scouting and looking for cool stuff. Saturday was a great day with loads of fish caught on almost everything we threw, Sunday was really tough but we still learned a lot from covering water.
Something interesting is that the grass that was all over the lake last year is almost completely gone. I saw a video from October of 2021 talking about the grass "problem" (it was getting in boat props), but they couldn't poison because it is a drinking water reservoir. Well, at the end of July 2022, the majority of the offshore lake bottom was barren of any sign of grass. There was still some grass near shore and around the lily pads, and I saw this other aquatic plant I'm not familiar with... after some google sleuthing, the closest I could find would be some sort of "pond weed" variety. Most of the fish we found were in and around these areas of grass/lily pads, and we caught them on weedless frog, buzz toad, chatterbait, weightless Senko, texas rigged worm, underspin, soft plastic swimbait, and drop shot. I'm not sure I learned anything about a pattern for the tournament, but I had so much fun playing with my newly operational fish finder (it was totally user error holding me back!), and it was really fun getting to study an unfamiliar lake knowing it would be very useful for me in the future.
I hope you guys enjoyed coming along with me for my weekend! This video was shot entirely on my iPhone8plus, since the first day was 90 and light winds so I didn't want to deal with my GoPro overheating and shutting down all day, and the second day was supposed to have pop-up thundershowers all day, so I just didn't want the distraction. But then it was such a fun weekend, with so many fish, that I threw something together.
Thanks so much to Strictly Sail & Kayak for always being such great supporters of the kayak community and for my Hobie Lynx! They are always there to help out with whatever kayak accessories I broke the weekend before since they keep a lot of the hottest stuff in stock ready to be picked up in person or shipped from online!

I really loved seeing both the camping and fishing aspects of this trip! The sky and water was beautiful when you started, I’m glad the storm calmed down and you were able to get back out. Great job on the video!

Great video! It was interesting seeing you catch bass at Mosquito on so many different techniques I never really use myself. Looking forward to your Mosquito tournament video. Keep up the good work.

Looked like some awesome fishing. Good luck in the tournament. A couple of weeks ago I was the only female in a tournament here in WA at Potholes Resevoir. 2/3 of the boys didn't catch anything, but I did! I was 27th out of 67. Doesn't sound good but it is. 108 degrees, made it a tough day. But I didn't get skunked. Good luck 👍

That is awesome! I consider top 1/2 of the field a win since there are so many top anglers in these tournaments. Unfortunately in my tournament I finished 40/54, it was pretty bad. Trying to make myself learn something as I edit that video, when I really want to just burn the footage! Thanks!

Your frog skills have much improved. I have yet to catch a fish on a frog.

Thanks! Oh my gosh, it is so fun! I knew I was close to getting that dang hookset down, so I took a few days and a frog out to a shallow marsh near me, and just practiced for hours... and after that weekend I had upped my landing percentage from maybe 5% of blowups to closer to 80% of all blowups. Still work to do, but at least not I feel like I can throw a frog in a tournament and it isn't just a total waste of time.

Yup. Storms come through fast. They also at Kiser Lake which host the BKFT classic on October 15th. I'll probably be there but not to compete. The backside across the marnia, the lilly pads sections are full of big carps. 11 o'clock of the fishing pier by the marnia there's a drop off, that's a good spot. I think the best spots in Kiser lake is the middle along the main channel. I don't think Hybrid striper bass count on the classic, but there's some big ones. Hooked a 2ft plus , broke 8lb braid by my seat(forgot the net). Seems natural color swimbaits little over the deep weed line works good at Kiser Lake. C ya

I have only been to Kiser twice, but it seems like a nice little lake!

@@GirlGoneFishing I'll be up there to see the BKFT classic , I'll be fishing but mainly in the middle to troll for Hybrids and stay away of flagged kayaks in the classic. I usually see kayakers fishing far right of the marnia and always fish activity left of the rock pier near some tree structures by the bank. A fish kept on jumping out of the water and giving me "the fin", I couldn't land him.

Launched from the causeway on tourney day. Caught fish during practice and during the tournament day only problem was one was short and lost 3 at the boat. All of which were in the 15" range. Things were looking up after the rain until the wind kicked me off the mid morning to afternoon pattern I had. Look forward to seeing your tourney day video.

You really don't want to see another video of me floating around not catching fish, do you? 🤣 Tournament day was a big disappointment for me (I didn't even get my limit), but the rest of the group set records for number of bass caught. Video will be out soon!

You had more than me!!! Curious to see how you caught them and what it looked like on the other end. It was a pretty fun lake and the scoreboard was definitely lighting up!

So I was wondering if you was just going to paddle or if you have a pedal/fin drive. Found my answer with the front view. Must be a light way kayak.

I paddled an Old Town Loon sit-in kayak for my first year and a half fishing the kayak bass trail, before I started working with Strictly Sail & Kayak and upgraded to my current boat, the Hobie Lynx. I loved my Loon, but nothing beats having that pedal drive!

I would agree. When one has too many different baits, it can lead to more confusion than clarity. As to what kind of fish, one is trying to fish for. Or how.
@academicmailbox7798
@academicmailbox7798 2 года назад
Frog fishing is rather problematic too. As a lot of competition anglers fish frogs in their time off. As some kind of guilty pleasure. However, when the serious task of competition fishing comes back into focus. Those frogs tend to go back in the box. I've noticed.

Even for the anglers with decades worth of knowledge. Introducing a new crankbait lure, into their selection of lures. Turns out to be a big deal. They'll take most of a year throwing a type of crankbait. Before they are totally confident, they understand how to throw that crankbait. That's something that one could have used the pre-fish time for. Just stick to crankbaits. And learn the lake through that one lens, or bait type (because within that lure kind, you can still carry out a lot of homework). About the lake, about depths etc. And it's a search bait type. Which might suggest ideas, or how to fish other lures and baits too.
@academicmailbox7798
@academicmailbox7798 2 года назад
You might switch to soft plastic bait systems in competition. Crank bait fishing is ideal for practicising (even though you may not throw a crankbait at all in the competition). Because at least with crankbaits, you can find some bass. At different depths and areas. In a non-pressure situation. But with cranking, it's less abstract. You're mind in practice is pro-active, and focus on something action oriented. Even though cranking with leave fish behind it, relative to other methods. Cranking can tell the angler something about a lake. In terms of broad brush strokes. The trouble with frogs, is they focus and concentrate an angler. On the little picture, rather than the big picture (which is why pro anglers like to fish frogs for kind of mindless therapy, once in a while). When they are off the clock.
@academicmailbox7798

As far as Melissa goes though, I think for kayaks and making the absolute most of a given area. Sometimes the soft bait is more of a competition approach. The cranking method is an ideal one to use, just for burning through a lot of different areas. For a pre-fish situation (where you know conditions will change anyway, by tournament time). So the only value to be obtained from a pre-fish. Is to start to think as generic as possible. As broad as possible. And that's what power fishing methods like cranking can deliver. Starting to think about casting angles too. That's important for any lure. However, you can start to unpack that whole subject. In terms of the broader picture. Just by keeping bait selection simple. And cranking around a bit 'for practice'. Like, using crankbaits one can even target fish around docks. Or fish out deep. Or anything. Just to get the measure of a place.
