I was watching this with curiosity. I ran that pass in the early 70s in a 2 wheel drive Datsun pickup. Had no idea what I was getting in to. I made it all the way to Leadville but it took all day. Got to the last climb to the summit and the truck wouldn't do it. It was a carburetor engine and being from the south I didn't know about high altitude tuneups. Learned about it that day though! Had to wait a while for some locals to tow me up that last bit to continue on. Only saw 3 people up there all day. Back then not that many people had 4wd. Great memory for me. Enjoy your channel! I'm 70 now and don't get to do this sort of thing as much. Do it thru you now. I did drive Engineer Pass in September though on my birthday. Fun day!

Back in the early 80s, pre internet, I did Imogene and Black Bear in my 4 cylinder 4x4 Chevy Luv, I think it was actually an Isuzu rebranded. 4th of July weekend and I was the only one up there. Ran it no problem. The track was actually smooth. Flash forward to 2 years ago I got nostalgic and took my wife part way up Imogene. It was like Atlanta at rush hour, lots of people and commercial “thrill ride” operators. The trail was so tore up that we found a wide spot and turned around. I guess it just goes to show you that you can’t go back. Internet=no secret spots.

I went over it this past September, started on the Leadville side though. I was in a Ram 1500 though. Bucket list item for me. You would have had no issues if the house was off.

: For the D60 up front, Torq lunchbox locker, both tires pulling when in severe rocks and deep snow. For the Sterling 10.5 in the rear. Auburn TrueTrack. The great thing about the True Track is, they're great in snow. IF by chance you lift a wheel, a little brake pressure and the bias will get the traction wheel to hook up. In my opinion, this is the least expensive route to have awd when needed. Torq lunch box in the rear will be making noises and in icy conditions driving both wheels like a posi. icy unsafe.

In my "Colorado guide to backroads and 4-Wheel drive trails", the 4-wheeling bible for that area gives Mosquito pass only a moderate rating, "suitable for aggressive, high clearance STOCK suv's with low range" Hmmmm. Lol, of course, I imagine they didn't have truckhouses in mind when the book was published. Cool times!

Well your off to a good start (know one played with your locking hubs....lol) As for this Mosquito pass (better known as Highway of Frozen Death) ....elevation 13,208 (not great for your nose issues) but hopefully future surgery helps!!!! ps I dont know why anyone would fast forward on anything you do ( That song rocked...wanted to hear the whole song) ..Who sings it again (want to look him up) , name of song will help!!! As for the sketchy pass ( knowing your limits on the water applys to the road as well....(believe me I know too well) Another awesome video .....ps maybe will get to hear your friend sing it with you one day!!!

#almart FTMFW! Yeah, I have a full sized old ass diesel, but I'm locked front and rear with nothing to damage or lose except for a beater 4 Wheel camper, much lighter. You made a very good choice. Thanks for the tune. It was very inspiring. Not kidding. And, that is practically my back yard. Easy one to scout though if you are around, especially the big ass snow bank up top. And then the fun begins. But you don't know if you don't go. But then again, "when in doubt, go higher!" But on the other shoulder, class 3 with class 5 consequences. Better have a throw bag on board. Lockers and less weight and mo mo momentum and no gives fuks helps too. And a shovel. There's a slamgrass song in there somewhere. Probably add chains, why not?

Yo, the rear differential for that truck shouldn't be an open differential. From the factory it should have a Limited slip differential LSD/Posi. It's a clutch pack similar to a wet motorcycle clutch. It may need to be rebuilt, you can buy the clutches for about a 100$, it's really easy to rebuild IMO. Nothing wrong with running it they work great when serviced correctly. 👍🏻🤙🏻

How are your transmission temps climbing with the camper. I have the same truck with a camper in the bed and I’ve climbed up similar elevations and had to stop when the temps begin to climb.

Tim i am so disappointed in you! with all of the road building material around you there you could have just tossed a couple of rocks in there and kept going!!! LOL!! all of that weight on that truck and if you aired down much more you run the risk of slicing a sidewall, good call of turning around.

Steep???? buy a four foot level - put it in the foreground of your "camera doesn't do it's justice photo"----- the camera will do it justice, --- also don't shoot with the camera unlevel- you are screwing up with no level horizon in view for reference... worth the effort to tell your visual story

Like u said without camper it’s easy . I went about 5 miles on this knarly trail up by bishop ca . With my Tacoma & full size truck camper. Never again & no fun . It took an hr to go 5 miles .
